Why did Sony do this? If they made the games flash instead of optical, they could put unlimited graphics on it.
>unlimited graphics
Nigger what the fuck
>>385785245
My first PSP game was a Naruto game. I didn't know how UMD's worked, so I pried open the plastic case to get the disc inside. I promptly returned the game later after I found out I was retarded.
>>385785459
holy shit I made the exact same mistake
Why don't consoles use 50GB SSD cartridges?
>>385785520
Do you want average games to be priced like $120 or something?
>>385785520
J O Y C O N B O Y Z

What are you, poor?
>1970

>Btfo by digital download
He never learn
>>385785648
It worked for the N64.
>>385785648
OH
MY
GOD
ITS
120 DOLLARS
WHAT ARE YOU?
POOR?
>>385785823
Blu-rays are great though.
They didn't want people to be able to pirate easily.
The plan didn't work.
>>385785829
The memory limitations on the N64 were pretty shit though, it only got 512 MB cartridges a good while into its lifecycle.
>>385785515
That Naruto was your first game?
>>385785245
Flash was a lot more expensive back then and they probably thought doing something similar to their MiniDisc players would be a good idea at the time.
>>385786014
They were 512 Mb cartridges, not 512 MB. Bit and byte are not the same thing.
>>385785823
Sony didn't create the Blu-ray format.
>>385786179
Right, I'm not good at prefixes.
Anyway, the point is that memory was a big disadvantage of the format, especially if you compare against CD-ROM.
>not just making the disc sqare to hold more graphics
>>385786308
Yeah, the faster loading times and non-volatile memory for saves didn't really justify the low storage space and price. I really don't know what Nintendo was thinking back then.
>>385785245
>sdcard meme
>>385786603
That wouldn't work. The disc spins and a laser shoots at it so the graphics would be useless around the edge.
They should use these instead. Think of all the graphics that can fit.
>>385785245
UMaD?
>>385785245
Why didn't Sony make the discs square so that there was more room for graphics?
>>385786308
That's a suffix, anon.
>>385786854
That looks like it can hold lots of graphics but imagine if it had corners, that would hold so much extra graphics
>>385786994
I'm very, very bad at it.
>>385786854
Shouldn't they make the discs softer? If they were softer they could stretch more, meaning more graphics to fit in
>>385785245
better question is - why is the build quality was so shit?
>>385786994
Exactly he said he wasn't good at prefixes.
It came out during a time when flash memory was still expensive. Keep in mind that the average DS cart was 8MB-512MB, while the PSP was 900 MB for a single layer and 1.8GB for a dual layer.
Considering that the PSP was not only a higher resolution then the DS, but also was graphically in-between the PS1 and PS2 and you have a much more demanding system that needed more storage. While UMD was not very well implemented and the drives are a piece of shit that are prone to breaking, it was a OK choice at the time. Not to mention Sony was trying to make it (another) one of their media formats to put movies on.
>>385786854
What about one of these? People tell me they make for better quality audio, surely this would be true for graphics as well?
>>385785245
This is like the people who argue that VR is a doomed idea because it didn't work in the 90s. Some sort of mental disorder that makes them think the tech we have today was somehow aways around.
>>385785885
he has a point though. blu rays has been around for over 10 years and it still hasnt taken over dvds
why were ps1 discs black?
>>385786854
oh look, it's manly tears holding a disk
>>385787329
>blu rays has been around for over 10 years and it still hasnt taken over dvds
Only retareded japs buy DVDs
>>385787392
Mostly to curb piracy, even though it didn't work very well.
>>385787462
I'll say. I don't even remember a single game in my collection that had a black underside.
>>385787462
Most of my ps1 CD's were black and they were all pirated
>>385787392
Black holds more graphics. It's an old trade secret though so that's why we're bottlenecked graphicswise now. We need more black discs to jam more graphics on them
>>385787612
This is not funny, please stop
>>385787601
most of your ps1 CD's were pirate and they were all blacked
>>385787723
We have a Big Media shill over here, trying to curb our speculation on how to store more graphics in discs.
Stay woke y'all
>>385787392
Sonybros
>>385787212
Only if you want analogue graphics.
>>385787748
My pirated PS1 game were all blacked?
>>385787883
>slow down record RPM
>colors shift and shapes ripple on the screen
Sounds sick
>>385787946
Yes, Snake
OK, can we finally admit that the psp wasnt that good of a system? most of its best games were watered down ps1/ps2 games (there were exceptions like killzone liberation). the only reason why people praise it to high heaven is because its piss easy to mod.
>>385785245
For the same reason Nintendo did this. Though it was fruitless since the PSP ended up being one of the most pirated systems out there.
>>385788254
It was a portable ps1. That alone made it more worthwhile than any other.
