I know they had in world advertisement at some point and now you can pay for special neopoints with real cash, but I don't get how they could run the website/employ people on that. I don't remember there being banner ads or pop-ups but maybe I'm forgetting them

I did! when it was brand new. around that time, I was working at my older brother's gamestop store and he told me to check it out (gamestop employees can "rent" games from the store for free) so someone in the store would know anything about it.

I didn't mind since I was really into neopets at that time. even despite the cute art style and my interest in the topic, it was a really mediocre game. I think I actually got stuck. I don't remember, since it was a long time ago, but I recall being thoroughly underwhelmed by it even going in with pretty average expectations.

They removed Habitarium (e.g. sit there and do barely anything to make hundreds of thousands of NP) so not really. You get daily NP from a slot machine now though and there's a ton of easy to do dailies that give out good shit to sell. I guess you could play the flash games?
What I do is hoard Mallard Balloons, high rarity but common books, etc, then scalp them like a fucking asshole when Charity corner comes around. Can easily fuck people over for 60k NP a pop.
