I felt no desire to play through BW/BW2's postgame compared to other games for some reason. Maybe I'll try again in the future, but I just wasn't into them when I first played the games.

People who claim HGSS were the best confuse me. HGSS are so fucking slow, the kanto part is shit since they didn't decide to scale pokemon levels, and money seemed like an issue last I played. Only "good" part was the challenge.

The game's optimization is absolutely abysmal. There's no defending shit like menu lag or massive frame drops. The game's so full of loading zones it interrupts you every 30 seconds ago, and that's before you get into your "friends" stopping to remark on every aspect of the island. I actually don't mind the new features that much but they really shit the bed on a game that really doesn't need to be heavily demanding on the hardware. Dataminers were suggesting something like the game re-rendering models every frame during battle. Just awful.

I didn't play Pokemon until sophomore highschool, nor did I watch the show or okay the card game, so I was pretty much protected from being a Genwunner nostalgiafag. I do love Blastoise but that's probably because turtles are my irl favorite animals. Anyways, I started with Diamond which I really enjoyed, and then followed it with SoulSilver, White, White 2, and then I went back and played FireRed and Emerald. I bought a 3DS a month after they announced X&Y, played OmegaRuby, and I still haven't finished Sun because it's so boring. These are my rankings if the games do far:

4. SoulSilver
5. Y
6-7 All of Gen 3 including remakes and Sun, as much as I tried, I just couldnt stand Hoenn.

FRLG, Platinum, and Emerald are editions that improved so many aspects of their previous titles and they rarely get positive recognition. Meanwhile, HGSS still has most of the same problems as the Gameboy Color games plus the technical issues of Diamond/Pearl, yet are still lauded as great games.

why are people so enamored with Johto? Even in HGSS the region is pretty lacking in interesting locales, the reusing of Team Rocket is really boring, and the pokemon variety during the main game is pretty atrocious (a fair number of the interesting pokes need to be traded with postgame items to evolve, or are just found in postgame)

You say that but in hindsight they were the only good gang. They stole, pillaged, smuggled, took hostages and were generally assholes. After that we had eco terrorists, space nuts, religious nuts, Final Fantasy villains and then I guess GF realized that they can't go on with this so they just made the newest one joke villains and moved the actual villains elsewhere.

It goes hand in hand with rivals losing their edge. In G1 and G2 the rivals were assholes and bullies who you wanted to hate, after that it was clowns or at best "friendly rivals".

I'm not saying a game for children, a Pokemon game of all things needs to have some kind of edge, but I'll take G1 and G2 way of handling things over goofy cartoons any day.

I got HG from the heaps of praise that people pour into it and seeing overall it was generally regarded as the best, but I didn't enjoy it much and dropped it midway through Johto. I don't see what's so special about it. But then again, I skipped GSC so the impact of the return is lost on me.

I played red/blue/sapphire/ruby after and I truly saw how amazing those games were compared to the shitka that were those games. I never tried platinum because I fucking hated Pearl/Diamond.
