Well they're better than "bigger" studios like Square-Enix
>>
Falcom confirmed the grandmaster will be revealed in CS3
>>
>>385780036
Falcom was the best only in the 80's, and I sure hope you don't think Kisekishit is worth a damn when it's literally Final Fantasy but with lower budget and more animu.
>>
How is Ys VIII? Kinda want it.

Only on the account of suits finding the vidya industry and sniffing that they could find money there and corrupting the bigger ones, and the smaller ones dying off as the AA market where JRPGs thrived shrunk during the advent of HD gaming and online console revolution.

They're a reliable and very efficient mid-tier studio that's mostly kept to its core tenets over decades, but isn't great at diversifying like they used to (mainly just Ys and Kiseki these days because they stick around 50 employees, 40 of whom develop, and that limits the scope of their games). I think they'll have to expand without losing their style or outsource more soon. Also, their sound team's always talented and groovy.

>>385780739
No? Kondo said we'll finally have enough hints to get close.

>>385781916
Much better than Celceta, quite an improvement from Seven, and it stacks well next to Oath/Origin for many importers. But it's mostly a refinement of the current party system with a few older-Ys elements thrown in (jumping, solo sections, Origin Arena-style fights, etc).

Orthodox is this developer's middle name, let's face it. How recent are you talking? I won't defend Tokyo Xanadu for idols and recycling content, but it's nice to have a Zwei-derived game again. Ys VIII does some weird and exciting things later on, especially when you get to play the heroine.

>>385789173
Chances of XSEED ever localizing it are low too, and she doesn't translate. But it'd be good karma if she could ever hack it for a fan translator. I know she's something of a fan of Arcturus.

>>385789270

>>385789396
Falcom's prez first mentioned having ideas for an Ys V remake last year in an interview, and more than half the North American sites he's been getting interviews with this summer have asked about plans for that. He's probably a lot more excited to get that into development. This time he wants to take Oath's approach with story/content, restoring cut ideas/locations/plot and characters originally meant for Ys V, without adding much new unlike how half of Celceta's new.

And yeah, I happen to like Celceta, even with its flaws. But I think Ys V will get a better (non-PS2 by Taito) remake than either of the Ys IV games Falcom didn't make.

>>385789620
That's also a thing, but Kondo's been getting questions for the Ys V remake as well.

Some channel just broke embargo and posted a long video of Cold Steel PC's prologue at 1080p/60 FPS with most settings maxed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsSuL-EN4w4

It's practically a new game with how fast everything runs and loads.
>>
>>385794706
Who care about grafixx if it's Falcom games anyway?
>>
>>385795091
Cold Steel has bad frame drops on PS3 and Vita, in addition to weak graphics. This fixes all that. And it runs on a GPD Win at settings close to PS3, which is nice.
>>
>>385780036

>>
>>385795974
You can slide voice volume down to 0 without affecting music or SFX. And there should be an undub very quickly, as I know someone who's got the voice files ready to go so long as the game's folder structure supports a drag-and-drop insertion.
>>
>>385796065
>thinking nu-xseed will allow that
>>
>>385796296
They put dual-audio support into the Sky games on PC where you can put voice files in the right place and the options menu then has a selector for VA. I doubt Durante forgot to use something similar.
>>

Both of them felt like experiments in how to differentiate from Ys' pre-established gameplay, and they didn't really succeed at that until 6

If I ever get hungry to play Wanderers again it'll probably be on PS2
I just had to point out SNES specifically because it's impressively bad
The soundtrack on the Genesis one is fantastic though, definitely my favorite version of Dark Beasts as Black as the Night

I don't think they are the best. But I do enjoy their games.
>>

I agree on the Genesis OST being fantastic. It's the closest we ever got to an Ys III Renewal. Wish Yuzo didn't leave Falcom after Ys II. I can only imagine what he could have done with the YM2608. Though technically he already demonstrated that with ActRaiser, but still.

It takes a lot of patience and the correct way to fight him is a vast departure from the way you're supposed to play the entire rest of the game, which is why most don't figure it out

anywhere you want, but here's my suggestion:
Ys I > Ys II > Ys IV: Dawn of Ys (PCE)(translation patch + dub patch if you want) > (VI: Ark in Napishtim, Origin, and III: Oath in Felghana in any order) > Seven > VIII

Optional: III: Wanderers from Ys (very different, not as widely liked as Felghana, also Adol talks), V (also different, translation patch but much easier than the rest of the series), IV: Mask of the Sun (Adol talks in this one too), IV: Memories of Celceta (play it if you really like the party system in Seven/VIII, but it's generally considered one of the weakest in the series)

I enjoyed every single one of those myself, so the only reason I'd recommend them in that order is so each of the three "systems" used in the series (bump, 3D, party) are contained to their own groups and in order
Bump being first because it was how the series actually started, it's typically pretty love-or-hate and if you somehow REALLY don't like that playstyle but still want really good action games, go to the ones after IV (though I'd say Dawn of Ys perfected the bump system and is my own favorite in the series by far)
The party system games (Seven/Celceta/VIII) are listed last because they get a lot of hate lately for being easier than others and promoting a more "modern" playstyle suited to casual toddlers who play videogames today, if that makes any sense, and also they were released most recently anyway

really though
tl;dr just play whichever one you feel like on impulse, you'll probably still enjoy it
