Depends on what kind of Orbinauts are in the game, Anon. We know this one is in the game but it works differently & doesn't use spikes to hurt Sonic, it spins so when Sonic jumps on it he bounces away. If we get the original ones from Labyrinth Zone then we'll have to wait for them to throw it at us, if we get the ones from Star Light Zone or Launch Base Zone we'll have to use a invincibility monitor, invincibility frames or avoid it, if it's the Star Pointer (basically an ice version of the Orbinaut) from IceCap Zone then we'll have to use one of the shields to melt it's spiked balls or wait for it to throw it at us as well.

She's not even that fun of a playstyle half the time because she can't roll. Her having the highest jump in the game thanks to the hammer move is pretty cool, but aside from that playing her can be a real hassle. I wouldn't mind her being a part of the Mania story though, but I hear that the dev team aren't really a fan of her so she's probably not in it. If she was she would've been in the intro booklet at SDCC.

Well there is almost one. One of launch base's badniks is used as the basis of a new badnik in studiopolis. That's not a guaranteed stage killer though because sonic games can and do have badniks with similar behavior but different appearances. But mania might be more strict on recycling elements than the past games.

Actually the spindash looks nerfed compared to Generations. Whether this is a shitpost or not, I'll never understand this complaint, in the original games you have like 450ms-500ms to react to something in the widescreen remakes that's extended to 900ms-1 second which is certainly nicer but the originals aren't bad with it either. When I was a kid I was able to react to most things just fine & even recently I played a rom hack that completely randomized new level design so I had no idea what was coming & had little issue rounding up to nearly 1000 rings in 30 minutes of continuous play time.

Regardless of all of this Sonic games rely on you replaying them to get faster times, it was how Naka envisioned it. So basically play the stages slowly, you don't need to go at a snail's pace but you don't need to be at full speeds until your confident enough to be familiar with the level design & how the characters control.

Green Hill focuses on allowing the player to build speed once they've learned to time their jumps and rolls through the stepped hills and slopes. Its the best designed zone from the first game with exploration kept local to the main paths. Emerald Hill instead grants speed off the bat and opts to penalize the yet unfamiliar for running blind with zone hazards and badniks, keeping a more open air design with fewer nooks.

Remember when I said Green Hill had decently lineated main paths with exploration kept sort of in the immediate vicinity off in nooks and such? Chemical plant is that design philosophy perfected. God damned near perfect zone.

Even ignoring aesthetics, the Sonic games did a lot more with the graphics than a lot of SNES games. Lots of DMA effects for stuff like the water rippling and the bacakground parallax, robust tilesets, dynamicly changeing palettes, and amazing use of the more limited colors that the genesis had. I played that hack recently and was amazed at how well they translated Yoshi and his moveset into Sonic 2. It also managed to make the game easier some ways and harder in others (like boss fights for the most part, Death Egg was easier as Yoshi). Metropolis went from being annoying to really fun as Yoshi. It's a top notch hack and I hope whoever made it makes a Yoshi in 1/CD/3&K hack too.

Tails and Knuckles are about as extreme as it can get without negatively effecting level design, and even then levels ARE changed just for Knuckles to get the best out of his abilities, so it's not adding a new character is just a minor addition. Any new character beyond them would either jeopardize the varied level design (the real meat and potatoes of Sonic, not adding in a ton of playable friends) or add virtually nothing.

Because Mania isn't a Genesis game. It's a new Sonic game made in the 21st century, with new reasons and opinions to do whatever the devs bloody wants. I agree, but to add onto this, it's not just enough just to make sure he can get through them while leaving room for plenty of other characters, this results in bland and messy level design. Chaotix is an example of that, Advance series is a more minor example. It should be about testing Sonic's abilities and his iconic gameplay in innovative and different ways per level. The levels are vastly more important than secondary characters.

I like the kind of character Amy was in CD, it's different and interesting, and we haven't seen it again in a main game since CD. You can at least attempt the Special Stages multiple times in the Classic games. Sonic Advance you're forced to do shit like collect 7 rings or find a single spring in the whole stage to get the damn things. I think Amy's addition would be a benefit to Mania, just not as a playable character. Ignoring that this game is trying to stay true to the original incarnations of the characters, adding characters that play too differently from Sonic results in less potential for dynamic levels.

I liked her character in Sonic CD, I'm sorry you hated it but I thought it was charming. She wouldn't have to be captured, maybe she could somehow effect the levels themselves by doing things in certain sections, for an uninspired example flipping switches that change the level design.

What would be the problem of adding her outside of needing to dedicate dev time to it? In other words, from a design perspective, you still haven't proven that her addition would be detrimental. It just sounds like you didn't like her moveset and you wouldn't play with it, but that doesn't mean she is a worthless addition since others could very much like it.

Because they add variety without being convoluted and without being limited. They're nice and non-obtrusive fluff. They aren't more limited to play as than Sonic in any meaningful way, and their addition to Mania imposes no limitations on designing the levels just for Sonic. The appeal of a classic Sonic game is playing as Sonic through unique and interesting levels. Playing as Sonic is a very particular thing in these classic games. Tails and Knuckles are alternate flavors of Sonic, which is why they work, although they aren't necessary. Amy in Advance plays differently from Sonic because she doesn't have to navigate levels that are as complex as being designed just around Sonic's moves, the gameplay, and the physics. I don't want Advance's spiritual successor, you'll probably get that one some day though and when you do I'll be happy for you.

The sprites are the same size/resolution. They added another shade to it and put more frames so it can be 60fps. It only looks better because there is no color limit restrains like the genesis had but they could make the sprites bigger and more detailed.

There was one thing from Dimps I think should be in Mania. In Sonic Advance 3, you could pair any character with another character. So you could be Tails with Sonic following, or Sonic with Knuckles following, etc. It would be very cool to pair up the 3 characters in Mania in any way you want. However in Sonic Advance 3 they can't really interact much. I would like it if you could be Sonic and hang onto Knuckles for his glide then do a full height jump out of it, or be Knuckles and have Tails fly you up high, only for you to jump off and go into a glide. It'd be neat.
