You need 8 technically. In addition to triangle,square, circle and cross, there are left and right slides (yellow arrows). Sometimes you need to do a double left, or double right slide. On DS4, you can tilt both analog sticks left/right to do so, but you can also bind them to buttons.

It's about 50/50 with the player base. I'm the same as you and have no problem alternating hands and clearing 10 star songs, but my friend whose been playing for way longer can't use a pad for shit and has to use his fight stick for higher level songs.

I felt that Summer Idol was really good for learning 8 star+ songs. It's fairly fast but the

It's possible if you set the joystick to be left analog stick, but it will be more difficult. The games were designed for the standard dualshock layout, so extreme difficulty songs pretty much require you to dual wield with the face buttons+dpad
