I have been playing Dungeon Travelers 2 and it is beyond fucking fantastic. The dungeons (other than samsara) are generally good-to-great, the party building is great, the combat is great, and the banter + scenes are actually fun because Fried is effectively "no way fag leon' at every turn, disarming all fanservice attempts.
So if you are putting Mary Skelter and Demon Gaze up there, that is a really high bar. Are they actually as good as DT2?
Hard but great dungeon crawler.
Fight me
>>385783525
way harder than most shit but its all due to the motto of "don't get attached to shit" because you WILL lose guys, even your strong as fuck guys.
makes you sad, but makes you want to avenge them.
>>385783525
I dont think it count as a Dungeon Crawler. Dungeon crawlers are usually in First person and exploration is a big part. But it might just be a sideway type?
>>385773705
>mystery DUNGEON
>not a dungeon crawler
>>385782824
I'd say 6 is the max. 3 in the front and 3 in the back pretty much covers all necessary classes
>>385783697
it is, each area is different and random generated
you have a party of non-discript characters
you have a goal in mind
its just not FP, its more of a DC than SMT will ever be.
>>385783312
But the localisation was announced already anon
>>385784019
They aren't really dungeons though, you are just moving a piece on a boardgame. There are generally 2~ linear paths and no traversal mechanics (doors, ladders, holes, portals, etc.)
Your goal is either to map 90% of the map, hit enough collect/fight rooms, or reach the farthest point from the spawn because that has the boss. That is every single 'dungeon'
>>385784019
>its more of a DC than SMT will ever be
Are you fucking serious?
>>385783828
Dungeon crawlers dont have to be in dungeons. It's a style, not a theme.

>>385784019
Is FTL a dungeon crawler too?
>>385784019
Most dungeon crawlers are not random though. Quite the opposite. Crafting maps with tons of secrets is a big part of them.
>>385773383
Eye of the Beholder series. Old games but the gameplay is still fun. Good advice is to have a piece of paper with you when you get to the levels with teleports. Fuck teleports.
I was wondering what a good retro dungeon crawler is. Would it be better to get one for DOS, or one an old console?
This game is fucking awesome of a dungeon crawler.

There's shitloads of sci-fi dungeon crawlers, so as long as you are only referring to high fantasy with that it's easy as shit.
>>385785443

>>385785494
Try the New Tokyo Legacy games or Stranger of Sword City for some more modern ones on PC.

>>385785664
I've been playing 2, but with no manual or strategy guide, I've been trudging along for some time. 3 is shit and 4 is great. 1 is pretty decent from what I remember.
>>385785148
Depends how retro you want to go. Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder and Might and Magic 3 and onwards are good starting points. Anything earlier than them and the games might be just a tad too much hardcore for you. Even I can't stand some of the 80s dungeon crawler games.
Dungeon Travelers 2 is my favorite dungeon crawl game of all time

When you really think about it, the chalice dungeons in BB are dungeon crawling segments.
Is there any dungeon crawler with multiplayer (as in, you party up with friends and crawl dungeons together - taking care for one or more characters)? Because if so, I'd pay for that. Especially if it had online and was still supported.
>>385773383

Dungeon crawler as a genre entails a lot more than just dungeon crawling, games like Shiren, Izuna, and those Pokemon games are usually just straight up called Mystery Dungeon. They are conceptually completely different from games like Wizardry and EO that people usually use Dungeon Crawler for.

>>385796171
Is this your first weeb game? Pretty much all the physical copies of those kind of vita games are disgustingly expensive since they only really make a couple thousand of them since that's what's guaranteed to sell. If you don't get them near launch you'll have to pay out of your ass if you want physical, digital goes on sale very often though. DT2 was like 10$ during Golden Week I think.

>>385802339
>Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain is a much better game if you own a Vita.
Tell me about this game. What's special about it?
>>385783697
>>385783525
It counts as a dungeon crawler just as Dark Souls counts as a JRPG. The problem is that Dungeon Crawler is often used as a synonym to Blobber / DRPG, which DD definitely isn't.
>>385793548
>>385792013
ignore Wiz4 if you value your sanity
>>385802485
nothing really special about it, it's just a solid moe-blobber. definitely better than DG, moero and the likes.
>>385802686
The only time I can actually find myself enjoying these games is when the dungeons are interesting. For most of them you can just turn your brain off and press forward until you're done.
What would you recommend given that?
>>385802791
Dungeon Travelers 2 by the sound of it.
>>385802974
I've played a few hours of it and I don't get all the praise.
There are a lot of hazards but none of it really requires any thought to get past. I can't tell one floor from another.
>>385793548
Yeah, they're very interesting.[screaming]
Rance VI is really good if you also want a JRPG feel.
>>385802791
definitely DT2 or CovenSMT:SJ desu
>>385803318
Strange Journey was cool, I better get back to playing that soon. I couldn't quite grasp the feel for the battle system yet though, I guess I can't break it as easily as press turn.
>>385803361
it's inferior to PT unfortunately. there's nothing complex about it, demons with the same alignment as your character just go for an extra autoattack if you hit a weakness.
>>385802791
Etrian Odyssey
>>385803578
I like those games, that's why I took an interest in Vita dungeon crawlers.
>>385803482
I liked the SJ battle system better precisely because it wasn't press turn. In IV I was one turning late-game bosses which was honestly bullshit.
>>385803983
>In IV I was one turning late-game bosses which was honestly bullshit.
but only because you first figured out the boss' weaknesses and built your party accordingly. I agree that you shouldn't be able to one-turn bosses but you should definitely steamroll them if you specifically tailor your party around the encounter.
Ctrl f STONEKEEP. no results. Christ. Fucking STONEKEEP you gd fgts
>>385802791
Grimrock's one really made me think.
Also, probably too simple for some, but I like Picdun's approach to all the dungeons being pictures that you gradually reveal, similar to picross.
>>385794874
so..roguelikes?
>>385803107
That one looping floor with hidden doors and rotation traps where absolutely everything looks the same is by far the most bullshit one.
Fuck, it took me ages to even realize it was looping. I spent an eternity on that.
Are the old ravenloft games good at all?
I remember playing it as a kid and it fascinated me because exploring felt really dangerous and hard.
Is it good, or it was me being an useless dumb kid?
>>385807938
>>385803107
This one. It looks simple at a glance but when you are actually playing it's complete hell. The dots with arrows around them rotate you in a random direction that changes every time and the map loops on the sides so you are just staring at a hallway that stretches infinitely with nothing to base your current position on. I imagine even if you try to cheat and use a map instead of mapping yourself you'd have an impossible time keeping track of where you are.
>>385773727

Give one of the mages levels in thief and teach them lockpicking.
Mages start out shit but once you get the third tier spell Saltanas you can slaughter just about everything.
Is it wrong to like the Raidy series?
>>385790801
In my opinion all souls games are dungeon crawlers
>>385808472
>Picking Oaths for the Warrior
As much as that annoyed me initially, I actually grew to like it. It felt like an interesting trade-off in that the more powerful the character got, the more restrictions they had in what they could do. I liked Dungeon of Dredmor's 'Veganism' perk for the same reason.
Any other similar games that buff your abilties but in return punish you for doing certain actions? Spandex irishman not entirely unrelated.
>>385786758
Fuck that game is depressing as fuck.Your party members are all dead. Later,
if you take them with you to specific parts they begin to remember what happened before.
Some of it isn't bad, like Michele just blew herself up trying to do magic too advanced for her when she was told not to. Rui was just bad at her job, got caught by the guards, thrown in prison and died in her cell after getting raped by the guards. Hina committed suicide after her brother was killed because she failed him and couldn't live with herself anymore.
But Grace was a knight who was blamed for crimes against the church she did not commit, was tortured and forced to watch her family be brought out in front of her and tried then she had to watch them die before she was finally set on fire. Daniel wanted to be a Phantom Thief like all the legends he heard when he was young,
so he joined the Thieves Guild and made a big score then ran with the money with his lover who had told him to do so. After he thought they were safe, his lover told him to close his eyes and then stabbed him and let him bleed out and watch as they try to run with the money only to open the door and get shot and killed right in front of him.
But to get the whole story of each person, you basically need to play the game multiple times with a new party for each scene.
>>385773383
Tome4
>>385808752
They have pretty horrible dungeons. But then again, I have not played the third entry.
>>385779243
Demon Gaze is nowhere near DT2. It's average at best. Dunno about the sequel though.
With that being said, DT2 is easily one of the best drpg's I've ever played, and I've played many.
What are the most brutal dungeon crawlers you can think of?
I've already played most Wizardry games. I played through the EO games recently and other than the first one they were all pretty easy, the more puzzle orientated dungeon crawling instead of having traps and complicated layouts in them didn't really do it for me either
>>385811004
>the more puzzle orientated dungeon crawling instead of having traps and complicated layouts in them didn't really do it for me either
I disagree, that's what I love most about it. I wish more dungeon crawlers were like that.
>>385811004
Elminage Gothic. I think it's the hardest in the series. Very similar to Wizardry. In Gothic though, the map is a consumable item making shit more tedious than usual.
>>385811004
Try Dungeon Travelers 2, it has some puzzle floors but it's mostly hazard based with complex and fuckhuge multi-floor dungeons and enemies that can kill you at any point if you make a mistake.
>>385811004
Strangers of Sword City ripped me a new one a few times.
Likewise, Dark Spire has been called the Dark Souls of DRPGs, though I think that was just to piss people off by trying to make 'x is the dark souls of y' a meme.
>>385773383
Shining The Holy Ark is the single best one.
>>385811004

But the first one is the easiest.
>>385773383

>>385811398
Looks neat, I think I'll play through that next.
>>385811481
I played DT2 already, still waiting for an English announcement of DT2-2.
Really liked it, the superbosses at the end in particular. I remember a lot of people complaining about requiring specific setups to stand a chance against some of the gods but those were honestly some of my favorite bosses in any DRPG I've played. Definitely recommend it if anyone is looking for a new dungeon crawler to play.
>>385811653
I was waiting for the enhanced version of SoSC to come out and then forgot all about it, definitely going to buy that when it's on sale the next time.
>>385811670
i disagree. I went in blind so I didn't know about shit like Immunize bug until after I had finished it, if you know about all the broken stuff I imagine it gets very trivial very quickly, but it's the only EO I actually felt like I had to pay attention and ration my resources in.

You need to learn that rng is a gaming element. You're not meant to overcome the rng, but manipulate it into making the best odds for yourself. You don't see people say "lol how do people enjoy poker, its just rng" It's because it's about putting the odds in your favor. Yes, sometimes you will get fucked, several times in a row. You just need to continue, learn, adapt, and make the best party, equipment, trinkets, quirks in your repertoire to raise your odds of winning. If you cant do that or understand why that makes something fun, then this game is not for you
>>385780081
This isn't true. Something can feel good for the time but if a game comes later and improves on it, the old game feels objectively worse in comparisson. If you want examples that means you have never played games that do something like this or you don't know what it feels like.
>>385812058
Not really sure what you are talking about so I probably dismissed it as useless and didn't take it.
Doesn't really change my opinion either way though, EO2-4 were relatively easy compared to 1 and didn't give me any real problems outside of their postgame dungeons.
>>385809281
Ffta. Laws begin fucking you over as you progress.
>>385812470
Troubador, it has a skill that recovers TP every turn and it's basically impossible to get past Drake without one, since it had the only skill that could remove buffs in the original EO.
>>385812470
I assume he's talking about Troubadour's Relaxing which gives you a TP Regen. He's a fucking idiot if he seriously thinks you need one to beat the game though.
>>385773383
If you haven't already played Lands of Lore 1 and Eye of Beholder 2, you really need to. Those are some of the best the genre ever got.
Also Grimrock 1 and 2 for a more modern take.
>>385811950
Elminage isn't really brutal as much as it is needlessly tedious. The maps are all large but it isn't really a puzzle as much as it is just a bit boring
It's very easily broken because it is buggy as shit and exploits are everywhere, hell you'll probably accidentally duplicate items or turn in quests multiple times. Just having an Alchemist makes the game absolutely hilarious because when you forge an item, all restrictions on that item disappear and 'contracts' with monsters are bugged to the point that you can have a level 1 monster party who are immune to status effects and instant-kill effects, have higher stats than a party of level 25 adventurers and have a 60% chance to behead enemies on any attack that will stack with the natural chance for ninjas to instant-kill.
>>385812727
>>385812712
Ah, I didn't have one of those so that explains it.
I was running something like Protector, Ronin, Alchemist, Medic, Survivalist if I remember right.
That boss was a cunt but far from impossible.
>>385812906
How did you deal with Iceblock? You can't avoid it with binds and Drake can just heal whatever damge you dealt to it while it's active.
>>385812470
1 is probably the easiest.
A Protector with a Medic can in turn 1, give the entire party near immortality with Defender + Immunize, and binds work insanely well on everything in the first Etrian Odyssey that even if you don't go Defender+Immunize and cheese every boss and FOE, you can just bind it and prevent it from doing anything dangerous.
I would recommend the original wizardry....even with the bullshit level drain monsters.
>>385813329
Level drain really isn't much of an issue compared to insta-kill + permadeath + auto-saving.
>>385813329
Level drain is pretty whatever, it's all the encounters that can wipe you before you even get a chance to act that suck ass.
>>385813253
God I love binds. They didn't always connect but when they did, having your inner-sadist come out was so satisfying.
I'm probably going to get blasted for this, but I liberally abused the restart exploit in the original wizardry.
>>385813769
Exploit abuse is all part of the Wizardry I experience. Especially with the surprise ninja encounters that just instant kill you before anything.
Most people wouldn't make it past the first dungeon without abusing Murphy's Ghost.
>>385787668
I actually felt like the RNG was better than Xcom. Different experience I guess. What's horrendous is the grind. You always need to throw stuff away, and it doesn't make the game more tactical or challenging, just longer than it has to be. I installed a mod to stack loot and it made the game a lot better. The modding community is solid and there some pretty fantastic skins for the game.
>>385812324
That's you changing, not the games. It is just as good as it was on release, you have just gotten too attached to something better.
>>385801884
That's nothing, they got a dead and buried guy in their party too!
Whoever recommended Lands of Lore in previous and in this thread
THANK YOU
This is one of the hottest shit I've ever played and shits on modern rpgs
>opens gamefaqs
>searches for etrian odyssey
>opens class guide
>reads class guide
>starts game
>makes protector + medic + troubador group
>stacks defender+immunize and spams relaxation
>lol this game is easy
literally what you people sound like. of course its easy when you know how to abuse and exploit your way through the game. looking shit up completely ruins the point of dungeon crawlers
PLEASE BUY AND SUPPORT GRIMOIRE
>>385816148
To be fair, a lot of people end up using at least Defender + Immunize without having to look up a guide simply because of the skill descriptions, especially towards the mid-game when they start realising that putting more points into the heals don't actually help as much so they start moving more towards the buffs, and a lot of people prefer to have a part with a 'tank' and a 'healer' leading to Protector and Medic being commonly used regardless.
It's shit like Hexer abuse that people don't just naturally lean into.
>>385815230
It holds up from a mechanic perspective (as in, the controls are very comfortable to use - even for modern standards)
If you are willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of that in favor of gameplay elements you can try Might & Magic 3-5 after that.
Same game with Wizardry but with regards to Might and Magic.
I've been lurking this thread.
Any recommendations for top-down / third-person dungeon crawlers? (That isn't Diablo)
Blades of Exile for windows was one of my favorites, but I have a hard time finding something like it (that isn't Diablo).
What's the opinion on Underworld Ascendant so far?
It's pretty much the only game to continue the legacy of Ultima Underworld/Arx Fatalis.
pic unrelated
>>385816713
actually no.
That pic is not unrelated.
though it's a pretty old build i guess.
>>385816556
Try Avernum/Avadon
>>385816831
I just found this on their website. Is it decent?
Do Magic Tower games fall under Dungeon Crawlers?
They are similar enough, usually a bit more puzzle orientated and about having to manage your resources while the combat is all about loss vs reward and decision making.
>>385816556
Brandish or Xanadu Next
They aren't turn based though, which may put you off.
>>385817261
some of the drod mods are fucking amazing but I don't see how that type of game is similar to dungeon crawlers at all. they are more puzzle games than anything
I like to dungeon crawl but I don't like real time combat.
I wish more games were just pure dungeon crawling and not running around in an overworld as well. Could never get into Wizardry 8 because of that.
>>385816974
They are basically spiderwebs main series next to geneforge.
Played avadon for a bit. Was pretty okay.
DCSS
>>385817846
Roguelikes are a different genre
>>385817392
>Xanadu Next
This looks rad. Thanks anon
Evolution Worlds
>>385793871
Wait, they made another Fighting Fantasy game? Awesome. I loved the DS game.
>>385783042
I have and I don't know what you mean.
I'm away from my pc and looking for some pre 6th generation turn based dungeon crawlers with party that I can emulate on my android phone.
I'm aware of DS games like dark spire or etrian odyssey but I'm looking for console, DOS is fine too if the UI is big enough to touch, games.I don't want to draw stuff on an emulator on top of phone screen every single step.
>>385784019
>it is, each area is different and random generated
If anything that means it's NOT a dungeon crawler. Oldschool dungeon crawlers like Wizardry are typically one giant, large, intricately made dungeon.
>you have a goal in mind
Are you mentally slow? How does this make it a dungeon crawler? I don't think there is single game where you don't "have a goal in mind". If you don't have a goal how can you win? If you can't win its not a game.
>its just not FP, its more of a DC than SMT will ever be.
The irony of you saying this while not even understanding what an actual DC is to most people is palpable.
>>385782808
SJ is quite literally baby's first dungeon crawler, anon. Even the more complicated maps are relatively small and nonthreatening by genre standards, random encounters basically never pose an issue, and there is all of 2 bosses that can by any means be considered challenging. It's a very fair game and really not very bullshit at all.
If you want some harder MegaTen dungeon crawlers you should look at KMT or Soul Hackers's postgame, but even those aren't particularly challenging
>>385773383
Lands of Lore 1.
Might and Magic 3-8.
Wizardry 1-8.
Dungeon Master 1 & 2.
Gold Box games.
Realms of Arkania 1-3. (the original ones, not the crazy bad reimaginings)
Dark Heart of Uukrul.
Elminage: Gothic.
Arx Fatalis.
Etrian Odyssey.
Dark Spire.
Stranger of Sword City.
>>385819524
Depends on how powerful your phone is but I liked Class of Heroes and Unchained Blades if you can get a PSP emulator going.
>>385818270
Most roguelikes are dungeon crawlers.
>>385820373
Here we go again, some retard thinks all a dungeon crawler needs to be a dungeon crawler is dungeons to explore.
BRB, gonna play some more of the best dungeon crawler of all time Final Fantasy 7.
>>385820730
>best dungeon crawler of all time Final Fantasy
The only retard here is you with that example.
>>385819973
I couldn't get into unchained blades, in don't really know why
2-2 English version when?
>>385820963
Did they even say anything about it yet?
DT2 did pretty okay I think so I really hope we get it
>>385819902
>Arx fatalis
>no ultima underworld though
>>385821124
I always forget UU.
>>385820963
I'm kinda sad that no one's interested in fantranslating the first one.
El Shaddai is getting a pseudo-sequel in the form of a 1:1 SMT clone (Even down to plot elements) next month.
Might be worth picking up when it gets a Western release.
>>385821086
I haven't heard anything at all regarding possible localization

How do I into Wizardry and other Dungeon Crawling RPGs? Thoughts on EO?

I think it'll be next year. Utawarerumono came as a total surprise.
Who LoT2 here?
>>385823160
is this game worth a playtrough? i hate using emulators.
>>385823920
>Thoughts on EO?
For someone who likes dungeon crawlers, those feel like shit. Too much accent on random encounters, too little interesting mechanics to carry the entire game. FOE system is mostly uninteresting unless you find an idea of returning to previous levels to take revenge on monsters interesting.
And i feel like gathering parties trivialize the entire economy system the game has going on for it.
>>385824113
Very nice skill customisation and point distribution systems, it lets you build characters how you wanted them. Bonus points from me because Kaguya and Patchouli are playable.
>>385824527
Nice meme
>>385787668
>RNG
Literally EVERY hero I lost was my own fault for taking an uncessary risk I could have avoided by playing safer.
>>385824671
Oh, so my opinion is widespread? That's a relief then, i thought i was the only one who disliked this shitty series.
>>385824671
He gave reasoning to his argument, you shouldn't disregard it as a meme.
>>385824548
Can't wait for the Special Disk to be translated.
>>385825040
>>385824906
At least wait a bit longer than the minimum time between posts, makes it much less obvious.
>>385825131
You're such an adorable little fanboy, anon
>>385825202
Nice edit
>>385785325
I really wish there were more realtime crawlers such at this and Grimrock.
>>385824346
All I remeber about it is that it turns into a beat em up when fighting enemies.
>mfw trying to play older dungeon crawlers
>mfw physical attacks almost never connect
One of the best dungeon crawlers imo.
>>385826368
It would be the best if not for the age mechanic.
Fuck this shit.
>>385826368
How can I never forget M&M5's pornstar portraits.
