Earthbound

I can never get into Mother 3, no matter how hard I try. It's just sort of bland and not very interesting.

3 is the only good one. Neither 1 nor 2 are funny. 3 isn't either but 3 focused on being a drama which it excelled at.

2 is better balanced but 3's battles are way more fun

I felt like 3 took itself too seriously for the style the games otherwise seem to go for. It's a bizarre and distracting dissonance that just doesn't really work for me. 2 hit the spot just right, and benefits from a surprisingly underused type of setting too.
I've been meaning to play 1 but I never really got around to it since I keep getting distracted by other things and don't really care that much anymore if I'm being all that honest.

I love Mother 2 but dammit I really wanted it to become one of my top favorite games.

What set it off for me is that Earthbound lacks character and story. I know that Earthbound is about the weird moments you encounter and you inserting your own story into it but it just doesn't click for me in that way. I want to love the characters but there isnt any personality in them to make them memorable to me. You're given the basic info on them but thats about it.

I wanted to see the gang interact with each other more as well react to the world around them. When I see see the party interact with each other that brings them to life for me and I can see that they all have different relationships with each other and how they feel towards one another. I hate it when they become mutes because I see that they're capable of speaking.

I also wouldve liked to see character arcs fleshed out more between the party to help give them more of a personality and make them more memorable as well as looking foward to see how they progress.

For example, we see with Poo how he's a spirtual warrior as well as the prince of a kingdom. I wouldve liked to see how he feels about his lineage or his kingdom as well as his training. I recall one girl in the village thats a childhood friend of Poo and how she's sad that he's always off in his training and never gives himself time to have fun and enjoy himself. I wouldve liked that concept to be explored more.

Another example is when you have to lead the attack on the Starman base and you find out that characters were kidnapped which include Jeff's father and his best bro Tony. We never see Jeff even remotely express any sense of urgency to rescue the people he cares about and I feel that's another missed opportunity cause we see that Tony cares a lot about Jeff and is always by his side so to see Jeff not express sadness or a need to rescue them feels shallow imo.

I love Earthbound, but I wouldve liked to see more character from it

That's true, but I guess the character in Earthbound is in the world itself. The wacky NPCs, the weird perspective in buildings, the funny music and everything else. It has a really distinct style.

I've never actually seen much of an active or annoying Mother fan-base. The only irksome thing I can think of is that some indie devs look up to Earthbound and try to capture or recreate some of its essence in their own projects. Give the game a shot and see for yourself.

Playing 1 and 2 back to back made me actually appreciate 1 more. 1 has better music (the best tunes in 2 are remixes from 1), has a better Magicant and a less linear story (I liked how you can essentially skip 70% of the game and go to Mt. Itoi).

Well it is Japanese in origin. I have multiple folders of mother fanart. This folder in particular is art from pixiv, as the filename implies. I do have a lot of Western fanart as weel, just not in this folder.

There's plenty of character in it. Talk to every NPC you meet. That's what makes Earthbound very enjoyable. In general that game isn't really for the story but the quirky dialogue and cool music.
