What do you think of VR? Is it just a gimmick like motion controls?

Just played RE7 in VR. Once the resolution and graphical fidelity gets up to snuff it'll be great for certain genres. Horror, racing, visual novels, mystery/exploration stuff, etc...

It's only a gimmick if it's used as a gimmick. Lots of Wii games had motion controllers needlessly slapped on just because the system featured it, but they're perfectly fine in other games. Similarly with VR, it's only good when used appropriately. So far racing/flight sims are the only thing it's good for, everything else is just a waste of time.

It's the next gen for games that require head tracking.
The Vive and Occulus have much higher resolution then the Samsung Gear, Playstation VR or google cardboard.

It's the future. Current tech is almost there, the main problem is a lack of content. In around 5 years most computers that you'd play games on will be able to run VR to an acceptable degree

I tried the cardboard vr on my phone and it was a cool experience

Technology still too early and no apps/services for it worth having for yet.

Once it can produce realistic/life-like graphics and not have the need to be tied down to a PC, it will probably take off. I think the future of VR will either be life-like graphics and motion controls as graphene becomes mass produced and form factor takes over, or it will be a BCI like system where it simulates/gives us neural sensations and movement without having to do anything (think like being able to experience dreams at any time, download other people's stuff/experiences, etc.)

Of course, this could be like 30 - 50 years in the future if these ideas ever do take off. Now the big thing is going to be wearable AR tech/overlayed HUD and computer information on glasses/contacts etc.

Nice quads. It's not a gimmick per se, it has the potential to make a more immerse experience. It's just at the point where the technology needs to improve a bit, and a true VR game needs to come out. It should probably be an RPG, as rapid head movements won't be necessary, so some of the motion sickness issues should be avoided

I see vr going the way of attractions, have them around best cities like go karts and shit, could allow for some more immersive experiences.

It also has a shit ton of applications for training in a plethora of fields
