That game looks sort of ugly. The background looks really drab and rough but the characters are colorful-- it looks like discarded gummy candy on the side of the road. What am I missing?

Yeah but it also adds a certain charm.

The background is quite dark and gritty, just like the story is. It fits the setting. I mean the game is pretty dark, even if it has anime characters and furries in it.

Oh it's good to see another Ankama-friendly anon. These guys have very good artists definitely. Have you seen the Wakfu animated series or the Dofus movie ? They are actually nice and give a nice idea of what their universe could look like in a 3D world.
For the games unfortunately, I think they stick to the 2D to be sure that it's working on everyone toaster (a very important detail for a MMORPG) and because maybe they don't have the money or technology to go into a real 3D game without drastic sacrifices to the visuals.

But I have to say, even with just isometric they can create some wonders.

For the most part yes. The first three have minor connections but it isn't required for understanding the story that you play them in order. IV and V are debatable as they are thought to possibly take place in a alternate universe, depends who you ask. VI is mobile shit.

BoFIII has a bit of a slow start so be aware. In the game if a character defends against a enemy they may be able to learn the attack the enemy uses, I didn't know until a few hours in and it messed me up a bit as I missed some useful skills, just letting you know so you don't make the mistake I made.

Personally I think IV is better but both are excellent games.

The color isn't placed randomly, those are just 108 unique character designs all on screen at once.

Even though the game felt experimental at times, Legend of Mana really stands out as one of SE's most atmospheric games of that era.

I think it was the first game I ever played that had its own ingame language to decipher, and really stuck with me as one of those "awe and amazement" deals that doesn't really exist anymore due to how samey games have become.

Yes and no, since the multiplayer worked where someone brought their memory card with their save over and the game loaded it up for the second player. I don't even recall if it would allow the other player to level up and customize their skills.

What you suggest is possible, but I'm sure latency would be a bitch, on top of how wonky playstation emulators are in general, so desync would likely occur sooner than later.

I think III is a great game but IV definitely is far superior in my mind. BoFIII came out around the time of FFVII when jrpgs were getting interest outside of Japan, I think it just had more exposure.

Not him, but I wouldn't say that Earthbound is ugly by all means.

Actually, I think it got an artstyle that really suit the tone of the game, simple, naive and warm. It's clearly not as detailled as Secret of Mana, but it also doesn't need to be. Everything is familar and recognizable at the first sight, and I think it was the point. I always saw EB visuals as some kind of "ligne claire" of pixel art.

Fair enough, my only problems with IV personally are that's it's too easy for the most part and has some fluff near the end that is unnecessary.

I agree. A lot of the levels feel so vast and devoid of life, but others are real nice like the dinosaur levels.

Okay good, I woulda been that much more depressed knowing I almost beat it and just didn't. Kind of like FFX, I got to some red demon looking boss where there are 6? spots around him and you position your party to be in those spots. Problem is his attacks hit 3 of those spots at a time and for like 2/3 of my hp so I got my ass handed to me, took a break cuz I was frustrated, and then never picked up the controller again.

These days my main struggle is that I just don't seem to be able to grind anymore. I end up being underleveled and getting my ass handed to me. I grinded to hell and back again when I played .hack//infection the first time. I was a huge .hack fan and was proud when I beat the boss at the end of Infection but didn't have enough money to get Mutation or any of the other ones. Tried to emulate it and I got molested by a boss, was too low level, even getting to the boss was a struggle.

Close. The comfiness stems from the fixed viewpoint. Indeed it's impossible to give the player the responsibility of finding a nice view by themselves.

Fixed cameras is a lost art, pretty strange considering is the ultimate cinematic feature.
>>
people shit on wow artstyle, but the actual locations were pretty comfy

I can't remember the name but one of the low level (lv 15-20 maybe) towns which had the perfect reconstruction of a w3 town hall was comfy as fuck
