I didn't bother using followers in 3, and I hated 4's 'companion level like/dislike' system so much I bumped up to 3 charisma specifically to get the Lone Wanderer perk on both playthroughs.

I remember my first playthrough of fallout 3, Jericho followed me into vault 87 or some mutant camp or some shit, and he got zerged by super mutants and then he pulls out his melee weapon and says something like "oh shit dis aint gud" right before he gets his head exploded with a super sledge

Piper has the absolute worst introduction possible, but ends up being an extremely endearing character and my favorite companion. The interactivity that was added to the companions in 4 also helps a lot.

The worst is probably Clover from 3. She's super uninteresting and not too useful. She ends up being trumped by either Jericho or Charon in evil playthroughs.

Boone is hands down the most useful follower in an open world RPG.

He's actually too useful for some people. Depending on how bad the player is Boone may very well end the game with more kills than the actual player.
