well, it's completely oldschool (as far as i can see), turn based combat like ff7,8,9,10 / breath of fire 3/4 and it has this huge atmospheric open world to explore, it's so rewarding

From what I can tell, there aren't separate maps. It's just like, if you encounter a monster in the corner, then a fight in the corner would be cramped. So they put you in the middle of a big enough room and clear the other enemies. If the room you were in was big enough then it might be the same room. Then when the battle is over, it puts you back where you were and resets any other enemies that were up

I didn't even notice the transition the first few times. I honestly like it this way

It's hard to tell how much to fight. What makes it worse is that enemies tend to respawn quickly or if you get to far away, so it's not like you can clear an area. They'll just keep spawning

How much is the world actually open?
Is the progression linear like in DQ8 or you can do almost everything out of order like DQ1?

just started the 3ds version.
control stick does top screen (3d) and dpad does bottom screen (2d).
top screen can use a jump button and an attack button for a sneak attack when you walk into an enemy.
bottom screen is traditional dq. can't see encounters nor jump/sneak attack,

for battles depending on what control method you're using when it starts determines if a 3d graphics or 2d graphics battle loads.
the battles in 2d are disappointing though. no animations for monsters. was hoping it would be like dq3 snes at least.
while you can switch to 3d graphics as an option in-battle, every new battle will revert to 2d graphics if you're using the dpad.

so its either use the stick and play full 3d with extras, or use dpad and get a slightly gimped classic dq.

There's no overworld in the classic sense of walking around miniature fields with small trees and mountains then entering a small town. Everything is part of the overworld and you're in third person at all times, so it seems like big interconnected areas. Progression is linear but you can backtrack and things like that, it's more like 8 really.

Basically you're the reborn hero, chosen by the life tree. The kingdom at the beginning wants you dead because they think you're the demon king (ties into DQ1 I think). Veronica and Senya are agents of some ancient order sworn to protect the hero. At that point in the story you're trying to figure out how to get to the life tree, since it's a floating tree it's not easy to get to. There's some desert kingdom that you're headed to because the sisters have heard of a floating branch they have. That's where I am too so I can't tell you anything further

What? It's not that demanding. It has some microstutter due to the DS refresh rate being slightly lower than a normal computer screen, but if you have a reasonable computer you shouldn't be getting any slowdown.

The red dot with the star around it is Samadi kingdom and the blue dot to the east is Homura. These two towns basically only have 2 areas between them, the area that surrounds the one town and the area that surrounds the other

Only if you're really desperate to play it and have no other means (PC or 3DS) to do it with. It has low framerate (I would guess mid 20s at times in the overworld), uses Unity models for trees and stuff, no voices, no original comfy menus either. The on screen controls for moving aren't that bad. Luckily there's an auto-run button so you can just move the camera around while he runs forward. Other than that it's DQ8.

Disappointed to see that this is another incredibly linear game in the series, to the point where comparisons are even being made to FFX. This game looked incredibly good too.

It's a shame that DQ has completely dropped the heavy exploration based gameplay that the first three games pursued and went the route typical for most other JRPGs where you just go from point A to B with a smaller focus on actual exploration and freedom. It would've been cool to see a DQ game with exploration and freedom that the first few games had with a bunch lore and story that you can discover for yourself.
