People are trying to mine Crypto-currency using sub-par hardware for the job (NVIDIA cards) and its driving up the price to insane levels

AKA nerds being gay and dumb
>>
>>385751391
Daily reminder: This is a misconception.

Mining is effectively high-level practical binning that is a good indicator of card quality and durability. Mining runs the cards consistently meaning temperatures only fluctuate with ambient temperature, there is less wear and tear on them than in the average used gaming card since gaming cards run temperatures all over the fucking charts meaning they're more likely to cause damage. Miners will also be abusing RMA practices and refreshing cards when and if they can to sell for a better return.

Basically, a bunch of fucking twats use CPUS and GPUs to crunch huge amounts of numbers to help find certain configurations of numbers to generate some crypto-bux.

But both the GPUs and CPUs are run at max power 24/7, so they don't last very long. So these shitlords buy loads of them (which increases demand) then burn them out and sell them cheap, which crashes the used market.

All for some digital coins.

t. am ultra mad, wageslave, poor fag who wanted a 1060 cheap for his upgrade just as all this shit kicked off

Bitcoin and its derivatives are "mined" by calculating hash functions. Basically you use lots of processing power to solve a really complicated puzzle and get some bitcoin as a treat when you do. In addition to creating new coins for themselves (out of a limited pool), these miners also keep the whole bitcoin system running so that people can send and receive bitcoins, and are also paid a small transaction reward when they verify transactions (again, by calculating hashes).

After bitcoin got popular, the chinks invented a special chip, an ASIC, that does nothing but mine bitcoin and does it much better than general-purpose processors like CPUs or GPUs ever could. Bitcoin mining these days is only really profitable using these specialized chips.

Because of this, a bunch of butthurt redditors who wanted to make free money in their basements got together and invented a new bitcoin called Ethereum that's designed to be much harder for ASICs to mine. Ethereum requires a lot more RAM than bitcoin, and the RAM needs to be fast, so it's harder to design a cheap ASIC for mining it. This means that the most efficient way to mine it right now is with GPUs, because they have lots of processing power and fast memory.

No one actually uses Ethereum except the miners themselves, but a lot of people are mining it in case it becomes useful at some point. These people are also buying out GPU stocks to get in on the bubble before it bursts.

I really wanna play modern video games but my PC is such a piece of shit since I have no graphics card. Is it worth overpaying for this card, or should I get something else / wait?

Depends on how much you want to play games.

Enough to over purchase a card if need be. Is the one I linked fine, or is there something better for my money?

The 1060 is similar to AMD's 480 in performance and pricing (on paper the 480 is a little bit stronger), so that's the other one you might want to look at. However, >AMD has comparatively worse drivers and may have worse real-world performance, although some will debate this.

>>385765214
If you want even cheaper, you can consider the 1050Ti. It has good price-to-performance, but is relatively weak for graphics intensive games. It ought to run new games on medium-ish settings, though, if that's enough for you.

1070s are so inflated that I just bought a 1080 instead.

There's really no end in sight for this cryptomeme. GPU manufacterers are talking about making cards for mining which would be a better price:performance for miners (they undervolt their cards and rely on memory so buying a 1070 is paying for way more clock speed than they need), steering them away from gayman cards. But that could take a year or more to hit shelves for all we know, and it could take months of it being available before it starts to affect prices.
>>
>>385755101
they still produce heat which damages the components, also constant fan usage damages them too. If they break pretty much the warranty is going to be useless because no one accepts mining cards anymore, you can look up more details.
Theres no reason to buy a mining card, not only are you getting a piece of shit but you are also giving more money to the same retards that fucked the price of gpus for everyone else
>>
>>385759662
You're and idiot if you think that ban will work like that.

The process for generating keys for cryptocurrency is fundamentally similar to the process that websites use to store your password. The (competent) websites never actually have your password, they just have a key that is generated using your password as an input. Every time you log in, that key gets generated on your computer and the result gets sent to the website. The website checks that it matches and knows you put the correct password in without ever actually knowing your password.

For this type of encryption to get banned, every website would have to start storing your passwords in plain text, which is basically handing over your personal information to anyone who ever manages to get a look at their system's files. Or worse, if you reuse passwords, you're handing them the key to your city.

>>
>>385751198
There is none, price performance has gone no where the past 3 years

Today you can get a 1060/580 for 300 bucks, 3 years ago you get basically same performance for 300 bucks 970/290
>>
>>385766758
Running a card 24/7 undervolted the way miners do is actually better for the card's lifespan than the sporadic loads gamers subject their cards to. The fan gets more wear since it's mechanical, but they can be replaced. If you're gonna buy a used card, it's safer to go with a miner. The only downside is that they flash the BIOS, which voids the warranty - if it's even transferable in the first place - but you can pretend that never happened by restoring the original BIOS, if the miner hasn't done so already.
>>
Why the fuck would you buy a pascal card now when they're about to get a price drop and volta is 6 months away?!

Vega 56 is dead in the middle of 1070 and 1080 performance for 400 dollaridoos, and will probably overtake the 1080 with fine wine drivers and proper dx12/vulkan support. Vega 64 is a bit of a disappointment but still edges ahead of the 1080 at the same price point

When volta comes along with proper dx12 support pascal/Maxwell is gonna be dropped like Kepler

Mindset like this is why amd keep losing marketshare even when they have the superior product e.g. 7970

Soon we'll have an nvidia monopoly and you'll be paying 750 dollars for the latest mid range card that's 15% faster than last gen, and everything will be locked down and proprietary.

>>
>>385778347
That's not how it works. You don't need a huge power supply for it. Most 500-600w ones will run it no problem. These cards and overall system configurations don't draw as much power as you think. Look it up even.
>>
>>385777750
No idea, you can't predict it.

It was highly profitable late 2012 until mid 2013, died down and recent surged to new heights. It's always profitable if you mine the right coins at the right time and trade/sell them at the right time.

I'm considering putting all of my savings into bit coin if it crashes again. If I done that when I first got into crypto and bitcoin was anywhere from 200 dollars to 800 I'd have a house paid off and live neet for 5 years
