ITT: Games Made Out of Passion

I've been playing some Ghost recon Wildlands lately and noticed that just about every open world game made by ubisoft has the same feel; you go here, do that, don't bother with here because theg just added this to make the game bigger.

And it all feels very disingenuous, as if the passion for assassin's creed 2 has been traded for a corporate strategy of releasing the same game because everyone is going to eat it up anyway.

I like games like Stardew Valley, not because it was an indie, but because you could feel the effort put into and experience it.
Same goes with The Witcher 3, the exact opposite regarding development size, but still clearly made with careful love

> Stardew Valley and TW3 are games I consider art. Art, imo, is a media made out of passion: music, video games, movies, photography, paintings etc

Ubisoft's pattern of making games reminds me of today's pop music and how it just panders to an audience with no real message or meaning.

How about passion and desperation.
>>
>>385741398
Ubisoft's games are better though
>>
You realize the thought process behind that game was "Lets make Harvest Moon but sell it places Harvest Moon doesn't release!"

It's literally a game made to cash in on the fact that Harvest Moon games don't release on steam.
>>
>>385741398
>experience
>game is coded so shitty that aiming your tools is wonky sometimes

Fuck off. Stardew Valley is ugly, barely functional garbage and the only reason it got big is because there was nothing else like it on PC at the time.
>>
I enjoyed Cjild of light.

I get where you're going with this idea. I felt that with Destiny. I'm glad I didn't fall for The division. Could you imagine if that game had a more, last of us, feel to it?
>>
Is the PS4 version of Stardew Valley any good in terms of how well it controls?
>>
>>385741630
>I didn't follow the development process

The guy just wanted to make another good farming game since there's so few. He had no idea it was going to be so big, because the HM fanbase is niche as fuck. It's actually hard to believe how much it blew up.

That and the main thing that sold most people who heard about SV before it actually released was the multiplayer aspect, which is never ever going to come out ;_;
>>
>>385742213
You're right, I didn't read the developer's excuses. No matter what reason he ripped off another game, I wouldn't define this as a passion project at all for that reason.
>>
>>385741630
More like "let's make Harvest Moon, but good and on a relevant platform".

>ripped off
You're right, anon. No other farming/farm life sim games can ever exist. All FPS games are just rip offs of Doom.
>>
>>385742351
I'd say it's less ripped off and more took cues from. It's not a direct copy of HM despite borrowing a lot of its mechanics. If you want more games like one you enjoyed, why would you change everything you liked about it?
>>

What happened to La Mulana 2?
>>

Makes you wonder why the Story of Seasons team doesn't go back and make a sequel to HM:SNES or something in that light given there's an obvious market for old HM.
>>
>>385742782
Coming soon (tm)
>>
>>385741630
That wasn't his thought process at all. The guy is just obsessed with Harvest Moon, he used to spend all his time playing Harvest Moon RP servers on Minecraft and then decided to make his own Harvest Moon game. If he could have released it on Nintendo consoles from the start he would have. He wasn't targeting a market that wasn't able to buy Harvest Moon, he was targetting the only market it is easy to make games for.
>>
>>385742782
The maker is frequently posting updates still, but if it's as big as the first game, I'm assuming it's going to take forever to finish being made.

Playing this made me feel like Matt and Trey really enjoyed making a video game. And all the call backs to South Park episodes and to the genre it's parodying were great. The fondness for the material caught me off guard because I was under the impression Matt and Trey were sick and tired of the show.

Hmm I don't think he ripped it off, but rather he was inspired by it.
Games can bring out one's passion to reinvent something the way they envision it or want to experience
I think a good example are all the romhacks for Pokémon. Some enhance the experience because it was created by someone who sees flaws or ways to better the game (Light Platinum?) ; others are completely for fun, creating a new experience that is still familiar (Snakewood? )

my understanding is that tom happ made the entire game on his own and it's pretty fucking good. the art is great, the music is great, the story is pretty cliche but unfolds in a pretty interesting way, gameplay is as good as any other decent metroidvania.

everything seems hand drawn and enemy designs are not only great but it's got a nice amount of enemy variety in the game. controls are tight and the overall balance of the game is well done.

Sorry, thought this was a different thread and didn't answer the question correctly. I do think they put a great deal of love into P5 and weren't just hoping to coast off the P4 wave. They nailed the aesthetics and Hashino was intent on putting out a story that tackled issues that were specifically Japanese, so much so he was a little worried about how international audiences would receive it.

Pitiful would be a game allowing all the time in the world to spend with an NPC over menial tasks and leveling up relationship when it has nothing to do with the story or, in itself, is not a side story.
Persona 5's characters, however ,do have a story of their own, whether directly or indirectly having an effect on gameplay and story. Their purpose isn't to appeal to losers searching to replace reality, but to add to its own story.

I never said I didn't like Ghost Recon or the other Ubisoft games. When I want to unwind and feel some false sense of accomplishment I play those types of games. Because at the end of the day, they have mastered the way to make a gamer feel in control and having an impact, not out of passion, but because people will dish out money to play something that will make them feel good.

I honestly have no idea if Witcher was made with passion or not. I haven't looked at interviews with the devs or anything, but I feel like it does. It's subject matter is incredibly elaborate, spanning from racism to ideologies. But it's not just that, it's how it was executed and the feeling it leaves players. It makes you entertain ideas you wouldn't normally, and presents it in variety and unbiased. As if the game wanted to send a message
I don't think you can have a game do that without being made with passion.

Sure, Ghost Recon Wildlands had times when it would question whether or not those working for the cartel were evil. But it didn't flesh it out, leaving it mostly to collectibles scattered around the map. Maybe Ubi had the right intentions, but telling from the finished product, they decided to take the safe route. I mean they do have tons of other games to worry about and collect revenue.

You realise how extremely this is to add, right? In fact it's even easier than only allowing straight relationships because you wouldn't have to do a check on the character's gender to determine eligibility.

there is a lot to do in wildlands (as in people to kill/interrogate) once you get it going

and i guess it's pretty realistic that there isn't much else in the world except tags to supply or intel to gather, it's not like it takes place in a fantasy world. speaking of which, i recently started playing ff15 and the world of that game is just shockingly empty.

there are literally miles and miles of emptiness, except the occasional battle and a tiny item to pick up here and there. i'm not very far in so i don't know how if it gets better but man, they could have put more into this thing.

Rayman Origins was a game like that. They put a shitton of effort into it and it sold great, but Ubisoft never believed it would do well so they left Ancel and the dev team with a hands-off dev process.
Then Origins actually was successful and the jews at ubisoft smelled the shekels, so they meddled with Legends, enforced DRM and uplay for zero reason and cut corners everywhere. As a result Legends doesn't even have a post-game reward level like land of the livid dead in origins.

I fucking despise ubisoft. They even, by pure accident, happened to create Siege which has huge potential but they're squandering it because they're retarded.

I guess, if realism is what they were aiming for.
But my problem with ubisoft is how collectibles and "pointless" side missions are scattered all over their open world (Pointless as no real substance of its own; probably helps XP points tho) and that's the main gist of a lot of their games. the only thing they really change up between them are the aspects of traversing (parkour, car, sabretooth, helicopter) and fighting
To be honest tho, they can be fun
