Breaking: Approximately 2 hours ago Robert Sirotek, founder of game developer and publisher Sir-Tech, had Valve served with legal papers. Presumably Sirotek has reason to believe the the conspiracy theories are true - Grimoire is based on stolen code and/or assets from Wizardry 8: Stones of Arnhem, a Sir-Tech game Cleve Blakemore worked on before leaving under a cloud.

Alright, here's the semi-complete saga of Grimoire. It would take a book to cover an online drama that's been going for 24 years, but here's the essentials.

Let's go back to 1992. Sir-tech has just released Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, in the long-running and legendary Wizardry series. If you didn't know at least that, you're too young to be caring about Grimoire anyway. Now, like all great games, there's talk of a sequel, and not long after Sir-tec begins production on it. Wizardry VIII: Stones of Arnhem is now in development. However, it's not going too well. So Robert Sirotek brings in a "crackerjack programmer" who had recently moved from Los Angeles to Australia. His name is Cleveland Mark Blakemore.

After being attached to the project, Cleve warns Sirotek that Stones of Arnhem is unsalvageable and should be canceled. Now, what exactly happened next is a little unclear because Sirotek tried to cover it up (look up the Stones of Arnhem eBay auction and how Sirotek had it seized) and Cleve is... we'll get to that. Eventually Cleve leaves Sir-tech due to a series of strange incidents such as the artists wanting to put anus monsters in the game or the presence of sex toys in the office (both of these have been confirmed by other sources, you don't need to take Cleve's word for it) and Stones of Arnhem fades into the footnotes of RPG history.

In 1994, after leaving Sir-tech, Cleve announces that he's working on Grimoire, a true successor to Wizardry VII. His goals are ambitious for a one-man project, but he thinks he can do it. Now, if you weren't around at the time, you need to understand an important difference between the 90s and today. At the time, gaming wasn't corporate like it is now, it was a scene. So developers weren't obsessed with a sterile public image and PR approving everything. If you wanted to have a Doom deathmatch with John Romero, not only would he do it, he'd lay down trash talk. Amazing times.
>>
>>385748116
So when Cleve spent a lot of time on Usenet answering questions and taking pot shots at detractors, this was nothing unusual. What was unusual is that Cleve is kind of a lunatic. Mostly alternative health, the government putting stuff in food, that sort of thing. He's also self-aware and likes to troll people who take everything seriously. The whole neanderthals vs. sapes thing is a joke, he doesn't actually believe he's a living fossil. But he is a conspiracy theorist, that much is true. His blog is filled with delusional ramblings about genetics, physics, nephilim and all kinds of stuff religious wingnuts are into.

But anyway, Cleve works on Grimoire and shows a couple screenshots. He has something! Maybe the game will come out eventually. A release in late 1997 is announced. People were intrigued... until the end of 1997 sails by with nothing to show for it.

It's been a few years, so some people were already skeptical of how much work he's done in that time. However, in 1998, a beta of Grimoire is released to a select group of people. It's real! He has something to show for the last three years! Some interest is rekindled. Meanwhile, also in 1998, the main branch of Sir-tech closes, showing Cleve was right about how fucked they were. The Canadian branch lived on, that was the company that would later release Wizardry 8 in 2001, very different from the other Wizardry 8.

But back to Grimoire. As time passes, it becomes clear that there's a problem. The short version is that Grimoire is perpetually very close to release, but never actually finished. It's bug-free, but needs just a few more passes. It's always very polished, but could do with a little more polish. Years pass. Release dates are announced and missed several times. Multiple incidents of online drama are fought over.
>>
>>385748207
We wouldn't get anything concrete again until the next beta in 2005, distributed to certain members of RPG Codex and a couple others. And even without the massive time gap, it's not encouraging. The game is somehow buggier and more broken than the previous beta, with few actual changes to the gameplay or map. Everyone had already given up by this point, this was just the punchline to the joke.

After some more cycles of the usual shit flinging and missed release dates, Cleve launches an Indiegogo campaign in 2012. It fails miserably, but still manages to scam 159 backers out of $10,598. How does Cleve respond to this failure? Does he think about why people don't trust him? Nah, he launches a second Indiegogo and this time gets $6,805 from 114 idiots. On both of those, he promises a release in May 2013. Then nothing happened.

Afterwards, on the Codex, he puts a count of "issues" in his signature and says when it reaches 0, he'll release the game. As it gets low, he makes the number a decimal, for partially solved issues. Then he changes it to a count of "micro-issues" and raises the number. Eventually it does reach 0 and he says the release is "in progress". Then it's a couple more years of claiming to be working on the game and shitposting on RPG Codex.

A few months ago, Grimoire was put on Steam Greenlight. It got greenlit because everything did. Needless to say it got a release date that it missed. Its next release date is in less than 24 hours, and it's going to miss that like it missed all the others. The Grimwah meme will never die.

There's no market in pandering to morons. I wouldn't want to make that kind of money. Grimoire is an elite game that is unlike anything else up on the Steam store. I defy you to find anything like it in the thousands of games listed. I defy you to find a game like it on the planet. It's not even a Wizardry clone really - it's everything Wizardry should have been but never was.

I'm not competing with Sir-Tech any more. Amongst other reasons, they went bankrupt 17 years ago. I'm not competing with anybody. Grimoire is the pinnacle of the peak of the summit of the incline. I could probably get 99.95 from a lot of people but I don't want to limit it just to the very elect of RPG players. I made a compromise and and priced it somewhere just under current AAA titles. The truth is there is not an AAA title you could buy nowadays that deserves to crawl up on a high chair and plant a kiss in the crack of Grimoire's ass when it comes to enjoyment, immersion and wonderful escape.

I say all this with confidence because I have been playing my game 12 hours a day for two months and I can assure you there has never been anything like it in all of recorded human history. It's the greatest thing ever to emerge from that genre. The fact is, people who enjoy that genre are considering it cheap at that price. If you are not a connoisseur of the genre then why would I amend anything in it to appeal to you? It's like saying Mozart needed more cowbell.

The game is special. I have supercharged it with awesomeness right down to the atomic level of every bit in the digital binary. $39.95 is very cheap once you have played the game for a short while.

Because he talks about sapes and thals he's always joking or whimsical, but when he talks about Bible stuff he gets dead serious. That's how you tell what he actually believes.

>Also, does people really have interest for this kind of game today?
A few, not a lot. More who say they do than actually do. It's the same thing we see with, for example, arena shooters. Kids too young to have actually played Quake talk about how no one makes these kinds of games today for the hipster points, then when an actual arena shooter comes out it dies because they can't deal with a genre that requires skill. If Grimoire actually comes out, you'll stop hearing about it because their bluffs got called.

>>
>>385762294
Incline is when good CRPGs with turn-based combat, tabletop-based character creation/progression system, good reactive stories and/or reactive dungeons are released.
Decline is what we actually get every day of the week.
>>
Is anyone really going to put in the effort to crack a game wanted by tens( maybe dozens) of fans?
>>
>>385762294
Decline is games being shit, and getting shittier with each year. Incline is something that goes against this trend by being good. Simple stuff.
>>
>>385762294

With 14 classes and 8 party slots, there are 14^8 = 1475789056 possible parties. If each playthrough takes 600 hours, that makes it 885473433600 hours to truly 100% the game. That's 101081442 years. It would take 1189193 of your pathetic monkey lives to fully enjoy this masterpiece.

> I have decided it is just a nice thing to do for people who have been waiting years to play my game if I offered a 10% discount on the game during it's first week. After this ends, I want to assure anyone waiting for the game that Grimoire will never, ever sell at a discount at any time it is on the Steam store ever again. I won't permit it to be sold below it's retail value for any reason. I am too proud of my finished product to permit it to be turned into simply another commodity in a Steam sale. If Valve ever decides that sales of the product no longer justify it having a page then I will move it to another venue - but as the author I will never offer my game at a discount again anywhere.

It's not, no matter how much you wanted to believe. Roguelikes are the games that are like Rogue, just like Doomclones are games that are like Doom.

We're talking about a genre loved by autists. They even made a conference once for talking about the exact definition, http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Berlin_Interpretation. One of the main factor is that the game being turnbased so your examples aren't roguelike games.

>>385775576
BoI very much isn't a roguelike. All of those shitty arcade-style games tried using that as a marketing thing when they first came out and after being told to fuck off and die made up the term roguelite instead.
>>
>>385777716
They don't really use roguelite though. Go on any of the major games journalism sites, they all refer to any game where anything at all is even slightly randomized as a roguelike.
>>
>>385778174
>Go on any of the major games journalism sites
All of which are basically irrelevant.
The majority of people who buy games don't read them.
The hardcore crowd loathe them with a passion and have for a long time. (long since before it became political)
Inbred niche sites for intellectual poseurs like Neofag and the Goons will link to them as thread starters but that's about it.
The only moderately sized demographic that seems to give a shit about gaming sites is weebs and they only ever link to gematsu or nip sites.
>>
>>385778787
>All of which are basically irrelevant.
Anything big enough to get industry figure interviews and exclusives is hardly irrelevant. IGN's Alexa rank is 288. GameSpot's is 709. Polygon's is 1,121. That's damn far from irrelevant.

>The hardcore crowd loathe them with a passion
And the hardcore audience is, by definition, small. Outside of a few particular genres, they aren't driving anything.

>Inbred niche sites for intellectual poseurs like Neofag and the Goons
Neogaf and SA aren't niche. SA is only small because it's old and dying out, not because it wasn't insanely popular at one point.

Nah, it just has to look like it was randomly generated, even if it wasn't. Here's a GOG user review where someone says Wolfenstein 3D is a roguelike.

Last year or so there was a /v/ thread where some kid said he tried Legend of Zelda on the NES and didn't like it because he didn't know what to do. Why do I bring this up? Because he said that even though LoZ was the first roguelike, we have to move past it because Binding of Isaac did everything it did better.

That's what we're dealing with here.

>>
>>385788379
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos- probably the most accessible old school blobber. Pretty simple, but it looks nice, has some good songs and has Patrick Stewart voicing a king who only gets a few lines years before he did the same in Oblivion.

Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2- Sort of a bridge between LoL and earlier, more hardcore blobbers. It looks nice and isn't too challenging, but has some elements of the harder games like no automap (without a popular mod) and the AD&D character system.

Might and Magic: World of Xeen- Another relatively easy blobber for its time, but this one takes in a pretty large world which will have you visiting strange dungeons and walking on top of clouds. Combat is a bit underwhelming, but it's an adventure.

Anvil of Dawn- Another fairly easy one. The character system is simple and you only get one in your "party". It looks nice but I got bored before the end. Some cool areas.

Wizardry 7- The game Grimoire is based on, it's massive and challenging. It'll be too much for you to handle at this point, but it's worth keeping in mind for the day you're ready to take it on.

Ultima Underworld- Not a blobber, but still a great first person dungeon crawler. Highly interactive environment (for the time, but it still lets you do stuff you don't see today like lock doors with keys), pretty good visuals, and a soft difficulty curve.

Etrian Odyssey- From Japan for the DS and 3DS, a fairly difficult series (for modern games, anyway) that doesn't stray too far from the Wizardry formula, but has a lot of its own tricks too.

I looked at a map of Wizardry 7 and it didn't look to massive at least not compared to the Etrian Odyssey games. Is the game really super big?
>>
>>385790567
that's because your looking at it from an eagle's vantage point anon, imagine walking through all that land step-by-step

it's the most amazing experience when you see the jump from VI towards VII

>>385736641
Agelets please leave.
>>
>>385790567
It might not look big looking at maps, but actually playing it is going to be way bigger. Actually going through it takes way longer than just looking at it, especially with all the monsters. Plus there's a lot of scripted (and random) content in every part of the world, so individual areas will all take a while. It'll take you a couple weeks to go through, probably. But if you want an even longer experience, you can import your save from Wiz 6 and import your Wiz 7 save to Wiz 8. That'll keep you busy for a long time.

But the main reason you should have plenty of dungeon crawler experience under your belt before playing Wiz 7 is the difficulty. The character system is complex and the monsters' power curve is pretty sharp. The game is blatantly designed for expert players.
>>
>>385735536
I highly doubt Cleve even knows how to put DRM into his game, so it'll be less than an hour after release.
>>

>It might not look big looking at maps, but actually playing it is going to be way bigger. Actually going through it takes way longer than just looking at it
Okay but is playing it just as fast as looking at a map?

I can't wait for torrent of his game to show up.

Too bad this only possible if the game is actually released.

Used his service back when he was still $5 for a wedding present. You give him a script and an image to stick on his monitor, he'll make a couple of cuts for you. You tell him which cut you like and if you want any changes, he'll make a final edit and send it over.

No idea how his workflow is now, but as far as how he was back at even $5, he's one legit hard working man - got those cuts in like a few hours, and the final edit in less than 8, the only hold up was me being a slow on the email response. Paid a little extra (like $20) for pop-up gold 3D text and gave him a 5 star review.

$500 is expensive as hell now, but if he's still making dosh off this, nothing but praise to him
>>
>>385791351
Honestly, that would make the game more endearing.

We're talking about a man who has been working on this shitty Wizardry rip off for 20 years, it's impossible to take anything he says at face value, as he's made it clear that he's absolutely insane.
>>
>>385792660
What if it's actually as good and complex and he's promised and is an actually good wizardry game?
>>
>>385792748
Even an insane man can create a work of art, but I doubt it will be as good as he claims it to be.
>>
>shilling in wide open
If you wanna do it here, at least pretend and do it moderately.
>>
>>385792808
Obviously not, not even to justify the 20 years he's spent onn it, but it cna't be a good game, I'd say there's a fine chance of it if only becaus eof the insane attention to detail.
>>
>>385792660
I really wish more people were crazy like that.
>>
>>385793052
Honestly, if he weren't crazy, this game could have been finished years ago, and would probably be better too.

Wizardry 8 is considered a blobber.

Any game in which lore wise it is stated that you are controlling a party of characters but game play wise it fells like you are just controlling one object that takes up a block of space.

Pillars of eternity is not a blobber because you can see all the characters moving around and taking up individual positions in space and doing things.

Legend of Grimrock IS a blobber because you never get to physically see your characters and they are all just permanently conjoined in single block of space moving together as if they were a single entity.

I never liked this term. Always preferred First Person Dungeon Crawler, First Person Party-Based RPG, or simply Wizardry-like/clone. They convey the genre or game style much more effectively than the term blobber.
>>
>>385796918
>First Person Dungeon Crawler
Vague, that would also include stuff like Ultima Underworld and System Shock.

>First Person Party-Based RPG
Vague, a game could meet that criteria and still not be a blobber. Fallout: New Vegas would fit that description once you get two companions.

>Wizardry-like/clone
Would exclude games based on Dungeon Master, with real-time combat without a separate combat mode, or games with tactical isometric combat like the Gold Box and Realms of Arkania.

>They convey the genre or game style much more effectively
They really don't.
>>
>>385797290
Then throw the term grid-based in there. If someone were to ask what kind of game Etrian Odyssey V, SMT SJ, or an Experience title is, then telling them any of those 3 descriptive terms would easily let them know what they are in for.
>>
>>385798380
>first-person grid-based party-based RPG
Or, instead of using seven words to describe something, we can use just one.
