It failed however in being a game that can and will have trouble keepings it's playerbase invested and engaged in the game itself, the gameplay is just servicable, but it's designed in such a way where to reduce the gap between skill floor and ceiling so theres no much sense of skill progression to keep you engaged, and abilities make the game lesser so about skill and more so posistioning and having ultimates ready

also blizzards drip feed of actual content that isn't lootcrates, temporary events, and other instead of new characters, permenant maps, the game spends more alot more time feeling stale, than fresh and exciting contributing to a declining playerbase

but with tf2 you have alternate weapons for each class, customs maps, a sold rock paper scissors between each class yet every class still has a high enough skill ceiling, where a person can be effective with any class in alot of general situations with enough skill

Halo 3 was an arena shooter with a nice variety of weapons with different strengths and weaknesses, randomized respawn points, nice levels, vehicles, a nice variety of game types from your standard free for all, team slayer, capture the flag, king of the hill, territories, to more "exotic" game modes such as infection, oddball, juggernaut, and the more out there maps and modes created by the community with forge modewhich allowed for the creatitivty of people to make entirely new game modes or interesting arenas even with incredibly limited tools, and the system was designed to make sharing those forge creations easily as possible

TF2 was widely successful because it didn't give a fuck about them. Games were 12 v 12 where the only goal was to have fun. Your team had 6 snipers and you were losing horribly? Just leave if it really bothers you. It probably didn't bother you that much though, because you were just fucking around as well.

I don't know how many hours I've spent in TF2 doing retarded shit like trying to stomp people with Soldier or trying to hit people with the boston basher as scout, only do run away or just around and watch them bleed out.
