I bought a 3DS launch week and like 2 games for it before it sat on a shelf for the next 5 years until it got fully hacked.
Since then I've pirated countless games for it in that period, some of which I have put over 100 hours into.
Would I have eventually bought any games for it had it not gotten hacked? No I wouldn't have, it would have stayed on that shelf for another 6 years, or I would have used it to play more piratable DS games at some point again maybe.

To be fair piracy does hurt developers but not big ones really like Sony , Microsoft, Nintendo etc. There aren't enough pirate fags to effect them. To make an example for piracy to affect the big three they would need half as pirates as their install base.

Sony would need at least 35 million people pirating their games. Microsoft 15 million etc. Don't get wrong piracy can affect a consoles early sales you don't want mass piracy on a system that just released.

Piracy affects small new indie devs games though. They don't have a budget to handle mass piracy or man power to expedite localization.

It's a good thing piracy never took off because the Google play store is what would happen. Google allows developers locks apps now behind safety net so if your bootloader or rooted they simply won't work. If they came to the console market piracy would be dead.

Now before you say but hackers will take the challenge most phones use Qualcomm chips so developers/hackers etc work together to find exploits for the chips. Qualcomm also documents slot of their code on Code Aurora forums. So it's easier to come by.

Consoles all use different chips/documentation/ different security etc. While it's still possible with a dedicated group the effort simply won't be there. Especially since you make bank simply by selling your exploits to companies like LG , Samsung, Google.
