Ar nosurge was actually pretty good if you bothered to get into the mood for it and research a bit on what happened on Ciel. Plus, it did serve as a good expansion into how other planets in Exa Pico's universe are and actually did something neat with its narrative given the actual use of the Interdimend concept they already had established for Ciel, not to mention it also delved into some important things from Ar tonelico's lore like the Teru, the song played by the Orgel of the Origins (which by that point we had never heard before) or the pre-Grathnode Inferia Ar Ciel.

Tsuchiya stated that AT2's goal was develop and present the bonds between the heroines in comparison to AT1, which didn't even show anything on that matter. That's why AT2 features the battle system it has and the Infelsphere.

Oh shit AT thread.

During this year I have been playing AT1 and 2. Truly great games.

My only complaint about AT1 was that the combat was way too easy. Even when I started using the repel things and skipping all the encounters, it still was piss easy. Though Mir wrecked my shit and I had to grind for an hour so but that's kind of my fault for trying to balance the game by skipping encounters.
And I guess the cosmosphere stuff was very basic. I played Ar Nosurge which went bonkers with the Dive system so it didn't feel that exciting in AT1.

AT2 I absolutely loved. Combat was better, characters were better, comsosphere was way better. Especially Cloches route. God I loved it so much. Only complaint I have is that I hated Luca and everything she represented. I see what they tried to do with her character but it didn't really hit me.
I still plan to do 3rd playtrough for Mir but that will have to wait till later.

I can't wait to start AT3 after I finish Persona 5 but I'm afraid my expectations will be too high after AT2. Should I be worried?

But even after AT1 and AT2, Ion is love, Ion is life.

2 is a massive downgrade in terms of production values, pretty much the only improvement it has is the combat system. 1's combat wasn't even bad, it was just too easy, and 2 still has that problem. 1 on the other hand has a much bigger world with more areas to explore, and the tower interior is a huge area that connects to almost all the locations along it, which is something I loved about the design, even if the interior did reuse the same rooms a bunch.
The writing isn't bad at all and I consider the overall plot to be significantly better told than 2's, and 1 even handled side characters better, while 2 had Alfman just randomly fuck off for the second half of the game, wasting his entire character, and the prince is also a worthless character who gets shoved into the story for a few scenes and then falls off the plot entirely. Never mind 2's horrible pacing with how much time you're stuck watching Cloche and Luka bitch at each other in part 2 (which comes out of nowhere after part 1 suddenly ends), and part 3 starts with as little fanfare. AT1 had the three phases as distinct arcs with distinct goals in them, something AT2 entirely lacked.
Then you can also add on bullshit oversights in 2 like getting locked out of Jakuri's cosmosphere unless you view one easily missable talk topic (which the game doesn't list as missable) or you farm 90 fucking IPDs, which was a terrible game mechanic to begin with.

Elemia is good all around, solid pacing, decent combat, likeable characters.

Metafalica is alright, it flounders for awhile in the middle but finishes strong, good cast and best main character in the series.

Third game is pretty bad as the cast is pretty insufferable and the combat hits an all time low.

Ar Nosurge is better than Qoga, but still not great. Starts off very slow and confusing if you didn't play the jap only prequel. Gets going by midway and ends very strong.

Actually, AT2's world building was better done than AT1's by far.

Sure, AT1 serves as the introduction to Ar Ciel and its overall universe, but Tsuchiya himself stated that the world setting hadn't been solidified by the time it was released, so there are some discrepancies with how things work in-universe like song magic being tangible instead of being 3D holograms, Dives of more than one person into a Reyvateil without causing any ill effects into her mind being possible, and even the naming system for the songs (EXEC_CHRONICLE_KEY/. versus the proper EXEC_CHRONICLE=KEY/., which differentiates a full song title from a name for a sub-program type song).

In contrast, with AT2 we have detailed descriptions of the culture and legends of Metafalss, its mythology woven into several of its songs, very clear historical and political reasons why the Rim and Pastalia are the way they are, and the implementation of a new Reyvateil system (Infel Phira) that is every bit as well-developed as the Ar tonelico-based Reyvateils. In contrast, Sol Ciel didn't have any mythology by the time AT1 was released (Singing Hill -EXEC_HARVESTASYA/. wasn't made until several months after AT1) and the fact its history can be summarized as "humans are idiots that abused their uberpowerful Tower and destroyed themselves, then came the Teru and busted the Tower to annihilate the planet, and then they destroyed themselves once again due to abusing the Reyvateils they themselves created".

That's without saying that some of the plot beats were poorly integrated into the gameplay. For example, the battle against Mir is exactly the same regardless of if you go for the bad or any of the true endings: you just kill her and done, instead of making her be a separate target from her hatred barrier and having only to destroy the barrier without attacking her. AT3 used this same kind of situation for its final battle and actually implemented it better.

And actually, I found AT2 did a better use of the party members than AT1 did: in AT2 we actually get to know them in-depth and see them develop, like Leglius starting stoic and no-nonsense about his duties to finally defrosting and serving as the party dad, Amarie starting secretive and as an enemy spy before coming to terms with the conflicts she has over Chester and burying the hatchet she had with Leglius ever since they first met, as well as Cocona demonstrating multiple times heroism despite the fact she's a little kid who has barely awakened as a Reyvateil. I'll only give you Shun, as his development is pretty much limited to changing from enemy to ally midway through the game and his whole character history was left reserved for the setting encyclopedia.

On the other hand, the AT1 party members fall off in plot relevance after Phase 2: Jack barely has a moment in early Phase 3 where he opposes Misha singing again and that's it, he has no other meaningful input afterwards. The same goes for Radolf (who has pretty much zero development over the course of the game) after the discovery of Falss' secret library, and the only defining moment of development Krusche gets is completely optional and is left up in the air, to the point AT3 had to finish off her character arc.

That's a poor argument. The dive sections are visual novels, they're the cheapest part of the game to produce. The game is longer yet has half as many location as in the first game and you're constantly going to the same areas over and over and over again. Plus a significant chunk of the script is all the shopkeeper events and item creation events, of which there are so many that they also hurt the pacing of the game.

I don't know, man. Leglius is pretty much totally irrelevant and serves no purpose in the story other than to help move Amarie's character development along. Cocona becomes a non-character after her IPD outbreak is dealt with and has zero relevance to anything up until the very end where Mir tells her to go to Qoga's area. Amarie was alright, and you covered Shun the same way I would.
Frankly I think both games did a pretty poor job of involving half the cast in the story.

Honestly, this a pretty poor argument to hold against any of the games in Exa Pico. After all, part of the idea is that people are forced to live in very limited areas, and Metafalss is the region that got shat the hardest between having an incomplete Tower and the people being forced to live above a giant drafter, which is the point the world having less areas than AT1 tries to make. Compare that to full Tower with a floating land around itself, or a slightly less incomplete Tower surrounded by mountains.

Actually, he does serve to put in perspective the ridiculous loyalty the Grand Bell Knights have to the Chancellor until his conscience gets the better of him and decided to rebel against Alfman, having endured enough of his shit for almost 20 years. After that, he begins counseling Croix on how he should live, and aside of Amarie, he also counsels Cloche/Luca (depending on the route) and also calls out Cloche on not exposing herself to danger unnecessarily near the end of Phase 4.

But that said, I do agree it would have been better if some parts had given a little more focus to him or Croix, like for example Reisha. The glimpses we get of their relationships with her are far and few.

We're talking about production values here, though. There are still large gaps between areas in 2 where they could have had more locations, especially in the tower. Environment assets are reused out the ass, even moreso than in 1, and the sprites look like crap compared to 1 and the Iris games. The narrative function of having a small landmass does not excuse the incredibly low production values of the game; it is very obvious that it was made on a tighter budget than the original.

That's my main problem with him in general though, he exists more to serve as a tool for other characters' development than as his own character.

Agreed there, when you first go to meet Reisha they get some scenes together and then fuck all for the rest of the game.

This was back when At2 was still in beta, so I figured it'd eventually get another editing pass. Clearly that didn't happen. Besides, aquagon has enough on his plate, and I'd rather see his effort put into Marie + Elie than fixing up the light novels.
