Personally I think Paper Mario 2 improved alot from 1 by having a better combat system (partners have HP, you get star points for executing action commands and being stylish, you have to deal with the audience at times, stats aren't as limited), better story, lore and characters; more sidequests, Pit of 100 trials. Although I can understand someone preferring the first one because of the level design not having as much back tracking.
