Dark Messiah, then again that has a lot to do with the kicking and really floaty ragdolls

a pure first person melee game with zero magic or gimmicks would be boring as sin

In my opinion?
First person games have pretty shitty melee in general. You can usually move freely while swinging a weapon which makes spacing, move selection, timing, etc, all really fucked up. Spacing and move selection is replaced by shimmying in-and-out of range.
They usually lack meaningful evasion mechanics.
They usually lack combos, low execution (outside of dumb shit like 720° double-drag rainbow autism slash from Chivalry or feint spam from M&B), reward is very 1-dimensional, etc.
Most of them don't have hit-stun, and none to my knowledge have hitstop, leading to a total lack of rhythm.
On top of that... All have shit animation. Just ugly games usually in terms of animation.
