AngryJoe shilled GW2 hard enough to make me interested in it. It was boring just like any other slow paced, stand in one spot and spam spells, no skill needed MMOs. Tera is still the King of Open World MMO Combat in my book. But Dungeon/Instanced based games are where it's at.

The only Tab Target MMO I like is Aion and Blade & Soul.

I liked this fight since I thought it played to the game's strengths, i.e. freedom of movement

Low gravity is awesome, jumping in certain patterns in order to redirect the orb attack behind the party is great design (not even sure it was intended), and the special mobility skill makes it really dynamic and fun.

Having done this fractal and gotten the no party deaths title, I also don't think this fight is hard to read. It's a mess sometimes due to mechanics layering one over another, but I never had a problem seeing anything due to something else.

I have an 80 Mesmer, Guardian and Ranger. I was mid way through levelling an Engineer.

If it helps narrow it down, since I'm drifting back in all my friends and guild has crumbled to dust, so the vast majority of content would be full solo, with the only real grouping probably being boss trains.

Also I don't pvp because...in a bizarre twist they deweaponized Australian internet and turned it back on us, I tend to run around and just die randomly without being able to land any skills.

When I say hitting with a sponge, I mean the animation doesn't feel like it has any impact. I don't feel heroic when I take down a vet, I feel like I just wasted a few minutes.

As for not feeling stronger, your character does get stronger, but the enemies scale so rapidly, that you always feel the same equivalent strength. In the open world, you're basically stuck with attacking small groups of enemies by yourself unless you want to get gang banged.

I also forgot to mention dungeons, but perhaps not mentioning them was the best option because they are largely irrelevant to the leveling experience.

Regardless, I think it's pretty fun and has some progressive design that'll make you wonder what other MMO devs are thinking.

Most of the complaints are based on the lack of real updates and new, serious content, but you'll still get an assload of time out of it. I played really casually and still loged around 500 hours. I don't even know how it did.

It's not just the writers though, the combat systems in GW1 were far more interesting looking at group synergy etc. Yes, it might be a bit outdated now, but it was still amazing talent there as well. Also they lost a lot of their voice actors as they couldn't pay them, if I remember correctly.

It's also very effective for regular open world PvE.

Elementalist gets a rather fun elite spec, as does Thief. Both can deal lots of damage as either power or condition damage specs, but Thief is more mobile whereas elementalist has more damage at the cost of survivability.

Revenant is extremely boring when played as a straight damage class but I hear people say that condition damage Revenant has a really fun rotation.

Ranger is useful as both a pure condition damage dealer and a condition damage/healer hybrid when specced into Druid.

The Guardian elite spec is generally regarded as subpar compared to core Guardian.

The Necromancer spec is also pretty great, if only because of aesthetics. Swinging around a 10 foot scythe may be edgy, but damn if it isn't fun.

Mesmers/Chronomancers are always wanted for endgame PvE content because they can reduce party members' skill cooldowns.

Well the advantage in GW2 is that for open world stuff you don't NEED to be in a party. As long as you contribute to the kill/quest/event/whatever you want to call it, all players get their rewards and XP. It completely removed the salt people would experience from "killstealing" in other MMO's.

Overall GW2's balance is pretty good. Some classes are always going to be better at certain content than others.

For PvE content, everything can shine as long as you use a build that's suited to the content you're trying to clear. Many raid bosses are more susceptible to condition damage than straight power damage, so condition damage builds are very popular for raids, while for open world PvE many mobs will die fast enough to a decent power build that conditions don't have time to ramp up their damage over time.
The only class that's generally agreed about to be subpar is Revenant, because it tries to be a jack of all trades and ends up being outclassed in most roles it attempts to fill.

In WvW, survivability is often key, as so many skills get dumped on your groups that glass cannon builds WILL go down within the blink of an eye. There's a huge mix of power and condition damage being thrown around, so balanced defences are mandatory.

I've never really gotten into the 5v5 PvP so I can't say much about that.

I'll judge it as much as I like, because it was driven on the hype of being a successor to GW1 and went out of its way to encourage GW1 players to migrate to it. The hall of monuments was supposed to be a continuation of your legacy. Saying that the company implicated that the games had nothing to do with each other is revisionist history.

And yes, ArenaNet can be judged according to their past work, as can any development team. With brands comes expectations, just like how BioWare went from delivering great RPGs to delivering mediocre shitfests and are judged accordingly. The current development team has a larger income than ever, more members than ever and yet manages to deliver less content for higher prices. Why shouldn't I judge them if they did a better job in the past with less resources?

Greatsword #2 will instantly go off cooldown every time you strike someone under 50% hp regardless of the trait. The trait itself is kinda shitty though. It just gives you 20% skill cooldown and a lame life-steal bonus on top of greatsword #2. They need to rework the trait to give the weapon a little more oomph to it. Maybe like adding a ranged cleave to your chain attacks or something I dunno.

Y'know I probably wouldn't like this game half as much if it wasn't for the Asuras. The techno-magic theme is pretty cool, Rata Sum is the most well designed out of the cities, they got some seriously awesome fluidity to their animations, best racial armors and they're just so goddamn adorable too. And I love how their whole society is just multiple factions trying to out dick each other for prestige and technology.
