Do you collect video games?

You can collect video games and not be a faggot about it.

Why yes I have a very big collection of classic videogames and newer ones, so much that I might need to buy a new hard drive soon.

Building up my old SNES library and I plan to look up a good CRT to go with it soon because I know how to appreciate the games of my childhood. Unwarranted elitism regarding a topic that doesn't affect you is probably a sign you're a manlet with a lacking penis.

does that count as "collecting"?

Not really, "collecting" is hoarding plastic because you believe it will have resale value in the future.

I make a habit of going around garage sales/second hand stores and buy the older PC/Xbox games for like a couple of dollars each.

I bought lots of vidya when I worked at a game store in the mid 2000s. I only bought games or systems I really wanted and knew I'd play. I almost fell into the mindless collector pit before though.

>have some old sega games on my 'hold' shelf that I just wanted to get due to semi-rarity
>guy comes in, is really looking for these games, starts talking in detail about how he used to play them with his brother
>realize I was never going to play the games and buying them would be a waste
>just tell him to wait a moment, come back with the games CIB
>dude's face lights up, says he just wanted the carts and didn't need boxes or anything
>ring him up, he gets a genesis system as well
>after he leaves collector coworkers look at me like I'm crazy, ask why I'd just let a random dude buy the games I had reserved
>just say he looked like he'd have more fun with them, they obviously held memories for him and I just wanted them due to rarity

I don't even see how people can collect older games with the prices now. That shit is downright insulting.

I actually had quite a few valua ones like Panzer Dragoon Saga and a lot of jrpgs for the PS1 and 2. I remember trading the 3 FF for the PS1 for a swap disc for the PS2 to a dude lol

The dude is now a mechanical engineer in Germany, so really, who's laughing now.

>no spouse

Of course. What's the point of all those instruments, though? Literally every instrument but the one you're playing is taking up space doing nothing.
>>
Yeah I work minimum wage and yeah I dump hundreds of dollars on old hardware to play games that can easily be emulated. What of it?
>>
>>385710939
It's always some assblasted guy that wants to own a collection of games but got to do it too late. Now, the prices are high and old games no longer litter shelves for 1.5$ so he obviously is jealous of the people that got to the collecting before it was mainstream.
tl;dr venting frustration
>>
>>385710956
I fuck roasties in the regs, so it's alright.
Anyways they're different instruments (and by different, I don't mean different guitars, but different instruments) and I do play them all. I actually am very cautious when it comes to obsessively collecting music gear too (mainly pedals), making sure only to purchase and keep ones I use consistently to avoid the unnecessary. Lots of people obsessively hoard music gear too.
>>
>>385711181

>Not using the contents of all hobby-related items and materials you own frequently, while actively increasing these materials beyond what is necessary despite the fact you don't nake use if what you own.
The difference is one person is participating in their hobby while the other is collecting, where the hobby is just "getting shit."
>>
>>385711346
James had his small little collection since he was a kid, he just made some videos with a nerd character back in 2006 and wanted to finish this thing as a trilogy. I'd say it's the other way around, people wanted to see more AVGN and started to send him their own copies of games. He's not doing any weekly/ monthly updates of what he bought or what he found, never bragged about it, never sounded superior by doing avgn. The only thing that he might be responsible is increasing popularity of older games among people that wouldn't care in the first place.

>>
>>385711943

Pretty much. The only time he has even shown off his collection is on a bonus feature on a DVD. At this point he wants a complete NES collection which is pretty much impossible but hes only like 10 or so games away from it.

He's bought games but mostly for the purpose of using them for AVGN (three fucking 32xs and the Jag CD)
>>
>>385712070

I just happen to own a lot of games but I don't have any sentimental value attached to most games. I bought them, I played them, now they collect dust in some shelve. I used to sell old games/consoles that I didn't use anymore back then when I was a kid because I needed the money.

I don't, but they probably aren't; people tend to play games they like.
It doesn't matter anyways, as a collection grows, each unit sees less and less use. Once you reach something like 500 games, each game us seeing play once every year-and-a-half or so, and that's if you're autistically playing a different game each day.
>>

>>
>>385703741
Nope. I was thinking about it, but the retro game market is the biggest piece of garbage out of every aftermarket in the world. And this is coming from someone who's spending 500 dollars on tiny plastic robot girls this month.

That said, I wouldn't mind collecting the whole NGPC library. Aside from an outlier or two like Cotton, it's not too bad. And a whole Kirby collection wouldn't be bad either.
>>

Also I rarely ever try to play more than $10 for a game, regardless of its age. I don't get why people spend so much on just one game like Earthbound or others like it.

To be fair an artificial scarcity of something like that portable NES they made is good for them for 3 reasons: It's a good way to test the waters on consumer demand, it prevents excess surplus in case no one wants it, and they can always make more in the future if they want some free money. If they knew how popular this stuff'd be, they'd have probably made a lot more. Nintendo is super fucking pessimistic, but I guess that's gotten them this far so why change now, especially considering the massive gut punches they took in sales with the Gamecube and WiiU.
>>
>>385714126
Nintendo likes people scalping their shit. They reprinted Xenoblade just so GameStop could claim they were rare used copies and charge higher than the old MSRP for them.
>>
>>385714307
>Good way to test the waters
Except they did that with the NES, then instead of giving people more like they asked for, they discontinued the series and started with the SNES, which is also being scalped to death.
> it prevents excess surplus in case no one wants it
Also prevents profits, knowing how much to make and how many people want it is important for business, and Nintendo couldn't have it any more clear cut for them and they still fuck it up.
>they can always make more in the future if they want some free money
Sure
>>
>>385703741
>>385712086
It's not about collecting really, I started buying old games about 10 years ago, since I didn't have NES and SNES in my childhood and I always wanted to play these games. Games weren't expensive then, youtube celebrities and video game channels weren't a thing yet, so I bought many games out of curiosity and in order to learn more about the past. Back in the day I didn't even know that Genesis was a console and that there was a competitor to NES from Sega. I bought many games out of pure curiosity. I usually didn't know that game existed until game listing showed up. Things like Nightshade, Midnight Resistance, Rocket Knight Adventures, Dynamite Headdy, Shadowrun games, Red Zone, Magician, all of them were buried under obscurity. I learned about them because I was ready to dig. Now you can look at complete sets of games, top 20 overlook games listings etc. but then it was an adventure. I haven't sell a game from my search, just some doubles that I happen to get from sets. I wouldn't call myself a collector too, but it's hard to deny when I have whole shelf of games.

>>

/vr/ autists are mostly anti-emulation since they need everything to be 100% exactly like how they played it as a kid. I do get why people like CRT's, but a lot of retro fags go overboard and sperg out about minor differences in color palate and need everything to be 240p instead of 480p. Also spending hundreds of dollars on cables or a Framemeister to make shitty 8 bit and 16 bit games look better.

A few month ago I sold my old Super Nintendo and games on ebay and surprisingly I got a lot of money for it. There was even a Hagane game in there which is worth a fortune these days (I bought it 10 years ago on ebay for 10 bucks). Just sayin.

I remember buying both ocarina of time and majora's mask n64 complete in box for like $50 each on amazon waaay back.

I also remember buying thousand year door, brand new for like $15 on amazon. I remember you could walk into a retro game store/flea market and get NES/SNES games for around $5-$7 usually. Never going over $15

Things have just went BANANAS recently and I don't know why. What happened?

I still get a hard on when looking at pictures with complete SNES/NES/Genesis games with price tags lower than 10$. I think it's because of the internet and how easy it is to check how much people paid for a game. Before they'd just assume old game is worth cheap change, but now it's rarity/obscurity that's in value.

Being a collector is quite possibly one of the worst hobbies you can have. More often than not it-

Fills up shitloads of space.
Feeds hoarder behavior.
Costs tons of money.

And for what? What do you get in return? A good feeling of seeing something standing on a desk that you probably plan to never do anything with? At least vidya can give you hours of enjoyment and not burn a hole in your pocket. I'm not one for shitting on people's hobbies, but HOLY SHIT being a collector is a bad idea. It's a dark hole you'll keep sinking in to. It's a hobby with little pros and (often) MASSIVE cons.

Yeah, being dependent on internet and 3rd parties to hold up games that you paid with real money sure makes you smart and reasonable man! These services will be here forever and it's not like some of the games disappear, change, remove some of the content or are just licensed to you and these licenses can be revoked anyway. I'm glad I paid 60$ for a downloadable license for a game, yes!

See, this is the millenial thinking got it all wrong, brainwashing you all to hell and back. When you buy something it's yours. You can do whatever you want with it- sell, borrow, give away, whatever. When taking digital copies under consideration you're being stripped from your basic consumer rights. You don't own a game, you've paid for a service to play them. Who said this service will be yours forever? And your lack of interest will enable companies to limit customers right even further. I for one like physical copies since I can play them the way developer intend them to play - no cut content, no DLCs, no missing tracks after music license is over, independent from my net connection and whatnot. The funny thing is I still have a Steam account with over 500 games in it, but all comes from -90% sales, humble bundles and 3rd party key sites. I simply despise the medium and people willing to pay full price for DRM botnet license services. Why would anything nice ever happen with this kind of customer practices?
>>
>>385731370
You don't own a game, you own the cartridge when it goes bust you might have to buy a new game. When Steam goes down if I want to play said game again I'll just pirate it. I really don't care about plastic and boxes but the game itself.
>>
>>385730249

>>385731629
True, and that's why emulation is a perfectly fine alternative. For me it was the other way around. I played most of the games on emulator back in my hi-school days somewhere around 2004, then I started buying physical copies. When PS2 emulator wasn't anywhere close to completion and games were dirt cheap anyway I bought them along with PS2. Now I tend to go back to older games, since I have a nice backlog of PC, PS3, PS2 etc. and I won't pay for PS4 or Xbox One online anyway, so there's no need to buy anything when it's new, fresh and for 60$. Just the other day I started my first Halo playthrough on Xbox Hueg. If the trend to limit customers continues (and with net neutrality coming to life), I'll just stop using newer media at all.
>>
>>385731370
PC games have had DRM forever, and the ones that don't usually had limited use keys or bizarre forms of copy protection which required the manual or some sort of wheel or hard to read colored paper. Lose your box? Fuck off, your floppy or CD is worthless, better download a crack/no CD patch. Steamworks is annoying but it's more convenient than older PC games were which is why it's so popular. The issue is people compare Steam to console games, when they should be comparing Steam to older PC games, which usually were more aggressive when it came to copy protection. The fact is, you've never been able to resell PC games because of piracy. PC games are WORTHLESS unless you have a box in good condition. That's it, you're paying for the box, not the game when you buy a PC game at Goodwill. Only console owners have ever fetishized the actual cartridge or disc the game came on. It's just data, and perhaps it's because PC's had hard drives earlier than consoles but the physical media never held the same kind of importance as it did with consoles. Just install the game and forget about it. Most games you don't even need to reinstall if you reinstall your OS.
>>
>>385703741
In a sense, yeah. If I happen to find a title I like I'll buy it, or I'll find a version I can play if I don't have the system I need for it (failing that I just make a note of it if I ever do get said system). I've got a backlog, sure, but it doesn't rule my life.
