I definitely think it's worth playing if you like seeing where the series has come from, especially if you're a persona nut. I'm not too crazy about the gameplay, but story's execution is ace. Probably my number 1 recommendation to any longstanding MT fan besides Nine. Work on that Japanese friends. It's worth it!

Because it would more than likely be a waste of time on the level of playing video games, with the addition of being boring as hell. You should only learn Japanese if it's absolutely necessary desu. This is coming from a guy that took 3 years in high school and can barely remember a thing outside of the kana and basic grammar.

>le Japanese is IMPOSSIBLE to learn
Fucking uncultured Americans. Just because you're too stupid to have had the experience of learning a language at a young age doesn't mean everyone is too lazy to put their burgers down for a second and read a few books. I guess that learning something for personal reasons or fun is "gay and pointless" to you anti-intellectual rednecks, since you look at things solely from a profit margin as all that matters is "MAKIN' DAT CASH, NIGGA," or however you idiots phrase it. Maybe if it weren't for that nasty circumcision of yours, you wouldn't need to watch all of that porn just to jerk off and would have more time to learn some Japanese. Oh well, stay retarded, ignorant, and overweight forever, I suppose.

I already learned it, sorta. Purely from anime and video games over many years. I can understand the vast majority of spoken Japanese, if they talk about something really specific like politics a lot of the terms will fly over my head but any generic anime/game has dialogue that is very easy to follow.

Text is a different beast because of fucking kanji but kana + context helps me figure it out often. I really should learn kanji but it's a hell of a process so I'm not feeling too motivated.
>>
>>385710975
I'm yurop too and Japanese is really easy for the most part. Kanji is the kick in the nuts but doesn't stop you from learning to spoken Japanese. Grammar and pronunciation are cake. There's no retarded stuff like in English where you don't know how to pronounce a word until you hear it.

Too lazy to learn Japanese because HURFDURF ANCIENT CHINESE HIEROGLYPHCS? Pick up Korean, or ghetto Japanese, as I like to call it. You can learn Hangul in an hour or two and that's the only writing system that you'll ever need for Korean. Plus, they some of Japan's scraps anyway, at least on Sony consoles. There's even a PC port of Digimon World for Korea. Oh, who am I kidding. You lazy fucks couldn't even learn German or Spanish, which are mostly the same characters as your own language anyway since this involves putting forth actual effort to achieve a goal.
>>385710975
Are you an African or Arab immigrant or something? Anyone with an IQ of above 100 can learn Japanese if they actually bother to study. Have you never finished a university course either? Try getting a Japanese partner or something. I met a guy through Japan Guide and we practice at least once a month. Sure, the process isn't super duper fast, but instant gratification is not the point of learning anything worthwhile. Just try for an hour a day and keep at it. Eventually, you'll at least be at the level where you can read shitty children's books. I translated a raunchy song about Aladdin jacking off after just half a year of studying and a bit of dictionary use, well enough for the Japanese guy to say "Wow, this looks like a good translation." Sure, his English is hit or miss, so his opinion on that may be a bit shaky, but that and being able to read Gash Bell was enough for me to realize that I had made at least SOME progress at that point.

Granted, if you wanted to really learn fast, you could just move to Japan to throw yourself in the den of lions, but that's probably a bit too extreme for most people.
>>385711157
If you have enough time to shitpost on /v/ and play video games, you have enough time to learn a language. Hell, I cut out my 4chan time for a few months recently and managed to get good enough at Tekken to beat one whole Japanese guy when I finally went there.

Japanese isn't hard, it's just filled to the brim with counterintuitive and unneccessarily complicated nonsense.

One easy example - Riyou suru/Shiou suru/Tsukau - all three mean the same fucking thing, "to use". Their way of talking is also simplistic to the point of retardation, I hope you like getting an entire sentence wrong because you also got the context wrong and they can't be bothered to properly use plurality or gender.

That said, understanding songs like these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNZVb9IggJQ after some time of fucking around with the language actually improves on them, so it's kinda worth it.

Why does everyone always assume this? Every time I tell them I learned Japanese from games and TV they're like "no you didn't." It's like learning through thousands of examples is somehow an alien concept to them. Every time I listened to what people said and also read the translation until I was at a level where I don't really need the translation anymore. I mean this happened like over a decade. It's not like I'm claiming "lol I watched a bit of anime and now I'm a master :^)"

I watch raw Japanese TV all the time and don't get confused unless it's a complex topic with lots of special vocabulary like more involved scientific topics or politics. I've also completed a bunch of Japanese games without a guide without getting confused because they had full voice acting so I always knew where to go next and what I should do there. I can't really make it through text only games without looking up help online because of kanji though.

Fuck y'all for making an ass out of me due to my attempt to poorly portray a language I don't know nearly enough about.

All right though, fair enough. What about their retarded tendency to give one verb like eight distinct fucking meanings? Who thought it was a good idea to give kakeru and deru (as one example out of many) so many different fucking meanings depending on the context? And then they have the fucking gall to split each verb into transitive and intransitive versions of itself, a concept with which I struggle with to this day because nobody can properly explain it to me.

So, apparently I can say doa ga aiteiru to just underline that a door is open without suggesting who opened it, but if I know someone opened it, you have to use a completely different verb along with TE ARU instead of TE IRU. Remove the TE form to state that something just "is" and it's completely fucking reversed, too.

And these, along with shit like motte kuru which literally means to COME while HOLDING in order to denote "bring", are just the basics. I mean, what the fuck gookmen?

If they did, I'd have a better understanding of spoken Japanese a long, long time ago. Putting the verb at the end, the general structure of the sentence and these god awful fucking cunty particles are what prevent me from doing so.

I'm still digging at it but it will be a long ass fucking time before I'm able to be competent. And having put in some work, I really don't fucking like most of it. Maybe I'm just incompatible with the language, or stupid.

but you have those to, why does Have have to means also must and do? what's the point?
>>
>>385713209
>you can't fucking say it's intelligent to give a verb that means "hang" two different meanings
You seem to have misunderstood something key here. The verb doesn't mean "hang". "Hang" is simply a vague approximation of its meaning in English.

The sooner you understand that all languages aren't neat little 1:1 copies of each other, the sooner you'll start making some fucking progress. If you absolutely have to think in English, simply rewrite the meaning in your brain so that "hanging time" means to spend it.

How can you spend money AND spend time? Do you not see that English is full of weird shit like this, there's no reason why spending time is any more valid than hanging it.
>>
>>385713319
Have is completely different because it also acts as a grammatic operator and should be one of the core words that you learn first, along with the grammar. You don't see me complaining about "sugiru" for example, because it only has like two meanings, one of which is often used because it's also has a distinct grammatic function meaning "too much".
>>
>>385713396
>"Hang" is simply a vague approximation of its meaning in English.

壁に絵を掛けてある。- The picture has been hung on the wall. Am I retarded for assuming that it refers to the concept of "hanging" something the same way English does, or do Japanese perceive the sheer concept of making stuff resist gravity vertically different than we do?
>>
>>385713290
Stop trying to deflect your failures
>>
>>385713643
You're acting like English doesn't have hundreds of words that perform the exact same way. The fault rests solely on you, for creating a very static interpretation of 掛ける as "hang". You know you also "掛ける numbers" in Japanese to multiply them, right?

You've taken a single aspect of the meaning of a word, and just gone "great, this is the only thing that word means". 掛ける has no equivalent in English, because it's a condensation of what would be several different words in English.
>>
i am pretty good at japanese, i can read japanese language novels and play japanese games easily, but the spoken language is a lot more difficult due to the amount of vocabulary you have to learn. theres just way more words you have to memorize in order to get fluent at the language than with english, if you are reading you can often figure out the meaning based on the kanji its written with, but not with spoken language, especially with all the homophonic pronounciations. this is a problem with native speakers as well, which is why japanese tv programs often have subtitles.

>>
>>385702729

>>
>>385714296
And what you're not grasping is that English does the same thing. The difference is, you're used to those compressed meanings, and not these new ones which conform to different, foreign templates.

Nothing is being complicated, nobody sits around wondering why someone is trying to hoist time like a sail. Compressing meanings into a single term is very useful for a language, because it vastly reduces the amount of vocab required for things like verbs.
>>
>>385714415
Because it pairs it with tons of other intrinsically confusing concepts. I know most of it is my fault and I'm just too lazy to grasp it though, but let me fucking complain that something is different than what I'm used to.

>>385714440
Shit, I guess. But later on today I'm going to be revising three units of a Japanese book that I've been studying for the past year, basic things like the ~ba form, and I can assuredly tell you that I'll find at least ten things which are stupidly confusing and unneccessarily convoluted.

Yesterday, for example, I've revised that you can express planning through three different grammatic forms that each use verbs differently. Fuck if I know why you'd want to divide your options for expressing planning into tsumori/yotei and a completely counterintuitive ~sho form paired with "I think", but I guess the Japanese are fine with that. All COMPLETELY different just because in each of the cases you're less or more sure of the thing you have planned. Fucking amazing.

Your course sounds like absolute dogshit if you're focusing on shit like "correct grammatical forms".

Do you want to know how you understand the natural cadence and grammatical rules of speech? It isn't from reading a textbook, it's from seeing lots of examples of actual native text. Trying to learn how grammar works is like trying to learn how a car engine works from a paragraph of text. It'd be far easier to just see a slowed down model of an engine. These aren't things you revise, they're things you naturally grasp and intuit from experience.

You're going to make mistakes, but if you talk to natives on skype or something, you'll breeze past that stage. You won't be able to explain WHY I comes before E, but you'll get it right every time, and that's what actually matters.
>>
>>385714332
This is the first time I've actually gotten a translation request filled on /v/. Most of the time, people will just flatout refuse to read a line or two because "lel, this looks stupid and like a waste of my time." Thank you very much.
>>
>>385714993
Any other ideas aside from having to bother with strangers on skype, or obvious things like learning from animeys or vidya?
>>
>>385715291
The more you read and watch, the greater your understanding of the language will be. You might be a little stunted when it comes to composing your own sentences without some native input, but that's not a huge issue.
>>
>>385714745
Actually pretty different in some parts. First seven volumes weren't even about the card game at all. They played a different game each week. The first episode of the anime actually squeezes together like 5 chapters and two different fights with Kaiba. Bakura's intro is done out of order and was actually about them playing a Dungeons and Dragons ripoff. Kaiba's father also kills himself after losing the company. The Atlantis arc and 2 virtual world arcs are just fillers that never happened. Last arc was also an RPG that didn't have much duel monsters. Only Yugi and Joey are duelists out of the main group.

This is true. If you want to be motivated to speak the language, interest yourself in history, actual culture, traditions, mythology, religion, arts, etc... of the country.
Do NOT try to learn the language just because you like manga, animes, games, japanese pop culture, commercial medias, etc...
These are the worst reasons ever, you'll be despised by everyone, japanese people included, and you'll eventually give up because it's not a strong enough reason to go through that hard work.

You'll really get motivated if you know japanese people or have a reason to talk with them, communicate and discover things.
If you're just a weaboo neet browsing memes on the web, watching animes and playing games, you shouldn't try to learn this language.

So, tell us, random weeaboo trash anons, why do you want to learn Japanese?
>>
>>385715572
I learnt Japanese solely to read a dozen or so CG sets from a single artist about my fetish.

It was completely worth it for that alone. When you then add on thousands of games, TV, animu, mangos, books, and edo-era historical texts, it becomes so worth it that my only regret in life is not starting earlier.
>>
>>385712659
I don't get it either. I don't know a whole lot of Japanese, but I spent a year in the countryside. Most of the expats I worked with picked up the language just chatting with the locals.
>>
>>385715720
You don't really know Japanese unless you also hate everything and scream about le weeaboos every 5 minutes. This is what that one English teacher guy on YouTube taught me.
>>
>>385715720
Probably because chatting is very different to watching anime with subtitles, which is inherently a very passive activity.

I suppose it would be possible if you actively engaged, and paused every few seconds to deconstruct the sentences. But at that point, you could just put in some real study and learn twice as much in a quarter of the time.
>>
Why not learning Chinese instead?
>>
>>385715572
But why? I'm having fun with this. I also really like video games. Is the implication that I should only learn Japanese for the sake of jobs or travel?
>>
>>385715868
Produce even a single thing that isn't a crappy knock-off first, and I might consider it, chink.
>>
>>385715813
By "chatting with locals", I more meant "getting trashed and trying to pick up men/women". Obviously, it still isn't the same as watching anime, but they sure as hell weren't deconstructing sentences and studying grammar principles.
>>
>>385715572

Because I have no interest in doing so and no real reason to. I really have grown to dislike this meme where people mention some random asian language just to be contrarians since liking Japanese is le evil nerd trait. I like a bit of Wuxia, but I like far more Japanese products. Only Chinese game I ever cared about was that KoF ripoff. I like watching Chinese KoF videos, but there are plenty of guides available in my native language of Spanish to the point where I don't need to learn the secret Zhongguo KoF tech. I remember a guy suggested that we learn Thai once, and I thought "for what? So I can fuck some ladyboys easier? I can just flash the baht and they'll get the idea." There is actual untranslated media I want to read, watch, and, play in Japanese already, such as a myriad of Koei games.

Furthermore, I already have a good job, so I don't really need the added benefit of saying I know Chinese to get more jobs. I see a lot of people here say they won't learn Japanese because they won't make much money off of it, and I think "don't these guys have good jobs already or at least survive off of neetbux and living with their parents? If not, why do they have time to post here?"

Look at this Japanophilic fucking sycophant. Japanese history? You mean feudalism that went on for half a millennium after feudalism ended in the rest of the world? Japanese culture? You mean regressive, traditionalist, collectivist, misogynistic (yes, I'm actually using that word) dogma that idolizes hypocrisy in all aspects of life? Japanese traditions? What am I, a fucking cave man? Japanese art? You mean like anime/manga, games, media? Surely you're not referring to the hilarious medieval art that is only novel because of how bad it is compared to the rest of the world's art during the same period? Listen here, you Hitlerjugend ass nationalist motherfucker, Japan is a SHITHOLE country, with SHITHEEL peple that, despite of its wealth and technology, is one of the most regressive and anti-secular nations in the world, like much of Asia. I am not a feminist. The problem is not that prostitution is legal. The problem is they can force girls to work in these legal establishments. In a bunch of countries, you get shut down for prostitution pretty quickly, but when a reputable business can offer prostitution, but has sex slaves, the problems arise. Buying diamonds is legal as well, but supporting African criminals that employ child soldiers and force slaves to work in their diamond mines? That's fucked up.

What the hell is your problem?

>The problem is they can force girls to work in these legal establishments.
That is forced labor, which is illegal unless you can cite some Japanese laws I'm unfamiliar with.

Let's try to work through the rest step by step.
> In a bunch of countries, you get shut down for prostitution pretty quickly
In a bunch of countries, prostitution is illegal, yes. It's mostly legal in Japan with a few exceptionsin regards to specific acts.

>when a reputable business can offer prostitution
Yes, go on...

>has sex slaves
Then they aren't "reputable" and what they are doing is illegal. Again, illegal sex trafficking occurs in every country.

>Buying diamonds is legal as well, but supporting African criminals that employ child soldiers and force slaves to work in their diamond mines? That's fucked up.
How is that relevant?

Except it's not? Hell, if anything, prostitution in Japan is probably more shady and difficult to access than in most western countries. I mean, in the states you can get a hooker delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less via backpage or some equivalent.

> In a bunch of countries, you get shut down for prostitution pretty quickly

No country like that exists, unfortunately. The only time when a brothel would get shut down is when they stop paying off the cops.
