Nah man, the game has straight issues unrelated to the genre. I agree it was never going to get 100/100 and probably get middling reviews, but let's break it down here: nothing in the game came to the quality (gameplay perspective wise) of either Banjo games. Nothing. Transformations, controls, camera, minigames, level design, writing... they were all inferior and some are just downright bad/lazy. We're talking about a very different game than, but of the same general quality of DK64. It just isn't very well designed and has some deep-rooted issues where it's clear the game wasn't ready for release.

It plays just like BK, people just aren't blinded by nostalgia with it like they are N64 platformers. It's why every nostalgia based cash grab is always disappointing.

The graphics are fine. The gameplay variety would have been fine if they condensed levels a smidge to not be so empty and fixed the terrible minigames. However, there were lots of 64 games with better production values, camera controls, and just regular controls. Mario 64 has a better camera than this game, and that is just sad.

And that's one of the better minigames. The casino one and the damn flying spikes ones are near unplayable. Or you have the flip side where it feels like an atari 2600 shovelware game with zero challenge. It doesn't help you have to do them all twice. I beat the game on launch 100% and I had a great time with it besides some minigames being annoying (mainly one in capital cashino).

Game got a patch that fixes a lot of stuff like minigames controls, kartos levels, bugs, camera and stufd

It's not that JonTron got cut, they can do whatever they want with their grunts and wheezes voice acting.

It's that they cut him publicly, making an unnecessarily huge deal of it. Which just came off as crass virtue signalling, normally you wouldn't make something like that public, let alone blast it from the rooftops.

It was especially galling because they'd happily used him as a marketing tool for MONTHS, and then when they dropped him, they refused to cancel preorders for his fans who'd brought it to support him.

Felt really goddamn cynical.

Yooka-Laylee takes more cues from Banjo-Tooie anyways. That's probably why people were caught off guard by this game.

JonTron is basically the Banjo-Kazooie guy. His Nuts and Bolts video perfectly echos many fan's opinions on the game. He had Grant Kirkhope on Game Grumps once. To put it simply, his fans and Banjo's fans have a lot of overlap. You can't gloat that you're cutting him without having some backlash.

Bad minigames and instead of collectibles bread crumbed throughout the level that'll lead you to secrets all the collectibles are scattered around with little care and thought. You know those shitty collectibles GTA has like shoot all the pigeons or get all the alien artifacts that are really annoying because the game map is so huge an getting them feels monotonous? The problem with the game is the fact that the worlds just weren't well designed. The notes in banjo were a perfect way to guide players and have them familiarize themselves with the maps, while the quills in yooka just seemed to be placed wherever. Furthermore, there are no real landmarks in the maps, everything feels very samey. I would have much preferred they stuck with a large amount of smaller maps that were well designed than what we got.
