It was done well in VtMB. You had two or three characters who were gay or bisexual but it wasn't their defining traits. You could figure it out through subtle dialogue cues, it wasn't branded on their foreheads.

Some of us really do want this, you know.

Traps are gay, otherwise I don't care as long as it makes sense in the story.

Games with character romance need more gay options. Some games have none at all, which is definitely a no-buy from me.

I don't necessarily mind the absence of LGBT NPCs though. Whether or not any characters in the story are gay or trans or whatever else is purely the writers' choice. I think the only problem here is when stuff like this actually gets censored, like writing LGBT characters out of a Japanese game because you're afraid of backlash from religious groups in the West. (or being rated up by the ESRB or something)

No idea about NieR, but you can take a perk in New Vegas that unlocks some dialogue options with gay characters, like getting guys to do favors for you. (It's useful for getting free repairs from an NCR guy, for instance) I'm not sure why that other anon considers this "forced" though.

I think you'll find the majority of gamers don't really care about LGBT characters as a detail of a game's fiction, we're just tired of the virtue-signalling ciclejerk from journalists and social media that follows literally every time a game with LGBT characters is made, which often directly insults the game's audience by insinuating we're all bigots.
