When i played this game as a kid i adored it. when i played it recently i thought the plot was stupid, pretty much every non-disney character was stupid, and the combat was boring as fuck. all you do is mash attack and occasionally dodge and block and maybe cast magic. and that's how it stays for all the other games. it's just boring, and not very good.

I don't. In fact, I love Kingdom Hearts. It's a generally kinda silly premise, but if you can look past the kiddy nature it really is a magical series that nails a lot of the spirit and fun of both Disney and Final Fantasy. The gameplay is simple but has a lot of depth, the characters are charming and exemplify their movies, the worlds are colorful and interesting to explore, the music is brilliant across the board, and the story, while a mess, is still charming.

My only issue is that the series has become such a nightmare to really get into and understand. Alongside splitting critical parts of the story up across nearly every platform imaginable (fucking plot in phone games, goddamn) the story and progression is a mess. I love the series, but I just want KH3 to come out and maybe tie it together a little bit.

You know what's interesting is I played these games as they came out, and when I was a kid I got excited to see all the FF characters making cameos and fighting alongside each other. I'm replaying them now on the PS4 and finding myself more excited to see the Disney characters this time. Maybe it's a different kind of nostalgia now that I'm older, maybe it's because Dissidia wasn't a thing back then and this was the only way to see different FF characters together and voiced. The best game still is and will probably always be the first one, before it got too complicated. KH2 is really fun to play but there's something really unique about the first one that just makes it really fun to play. The scope of the adventure, the absurdity of the concept. Even the gameplay, which is decidedly clunky, fits into the game rather nicely. As much as the game is "about" the Disney stuff it really isn't the focus, it's just used to further the plot and characters. At its core the first game is about a kid looking for his friends after he's flung into a strange world and forced to deal with a destiny he didn't want or prepare for that wasn't even intended for him to begin with. There's a real beauty in the simplicity that the series loses immediately after this game.
