this
I think the fact that it was relatively short played into it too. in most games you can see the story arcs playing out over dozens of hours as you grind away through more and more fights/puzzles/whatever, eventually to the point where you just want the game to end, and so the last 1/4 of the story and the climax don't really impact you. maybe it's just me
>>385652347
Mother 3 followed by Persona 3&4 followed by MGS2&3 followed by 999&VLR. The weirdest thing is I tell the years that I've lived my life by what game I played that managed to make me feel that feeling. Does anyone else have that?

Red Dead Redemption
>>385654650
This to be honest.
Gameplay was enjoyable like every other in MG series, but core fun of exploring story was cut off.
>These guys give 25-40x the xp of regular battles
How is this not an awful mechanic? I could understand if they were super rare but you farm these things in the ps2 and 3ds version of the game. It makes fighting normal battles completely pointless, especially on the 3ds version where you can just run past them.
How is this game considered to be one of the best JRPGs ever? The world is boring as fuck, whenever you explore you either find a mini medal or a "boss" which is a stronger version of a regular enemy. The side content is severely lacking and enemies are reskinned and reused like 5x per sprite. Is it because the dragon ball guy did the artwork? Could they not afford to pay the fucker to draw some more monsters?

Getting all Jet rankings, all characters and all graffiti souls in Jet Set Radio.
Such an incredibly unique game but there is nothing else like it.
At best you've got games that shallowly mimic the visual style and maybe have grinding and rollerblades but it's just not the same.
The arcade scoring system, heavy focus on momentum, timed missions, the inputs required for graffiti and carefully chosen graffiti locations are what made Jet Set Radio such a joy to play.

>>385656506
I think it would have hit me really hard if it wasn't such a retarded ending. I loved 1&2 and had really bought into the setting and characters, but after finishing 3 I never wanted to think about it again
This probably sounds stupid but I'm gonna have to say Skyrim. I was 16 when it came out and didn't have the awareness I have now as a 23 year old when it comes to game design. I didn't know how much the series had been dumbed down. I shit you not though, coolest thing I ever played at the time.
Also Red Dead Redemption, I think I did every side mission there was and got really bored with it which sucks because I never thought I would.

it's a nice game if you're easily distracted by the nuances of teenbook story archetypes and clichés. of course, i wouldn't expect a drooling mouthbreather like you to appreciate the artistic integrity of real videogames. enjoy your baby VN with an absurd interpretation and grasp of time travel.

>>385656014
I'm okay with the "twist ending" but I kind of also wish the series just ended with homura going with madoka.
Now there's the risk that the series just never concludes after 2 or 3 more movies.

>I'm okay with the "twist ending" but I kind of also wish the series just ended with homura going with madoka.

it's about homura coming to terms with everything that happened and rejecting it, instead of repressing it like at the series end
>yeh like if rebellion ended it right? they already showed the concept trailer for the next one dude.
it was just a concept trailer, they haven't given any info in a while

I got the opposite. really satisfying game mechanically, but the story was so threadbare I didn't feel attached to the world at all. enjoyed it all the way through and then never thought about it again.
to me, and most people I think, "post-game ""depression""" is about knowing the plot is finished and you'll never experience it for the first time again. if all you want is the gameplay, you're losing nothing by just starting again
>>385660713
so do you believe that they aren't making a sequel to beyond good and evil because they haven't given any info in a while?
is there a strict 3 week schedule of info that has to be followed for sources and content to remain valid?
>>385661091
for the first time in my life I understand not wanting to finish a game because then it'll end and that'll be it.
>>385652347
Probably Kara No Shoujo. While the first one was more meaty and dreary the sequel got me with its depressive mood and the ending was just perfect despite being obvious from the spoilers at the very beginning.
Thankfully, the best girl is still there but who knows what will happen in third.

>>385661091
I dunno, Persona 3 hit me way way harder than 4. I played 3 a year or so ago and recently played 4 so it's not like I'm letting childhood cloud my opinions or anything either. I think for me it was the fact that Persona 3 had a lot more hardship and conflict in it so it felt like a group was actually working through hard times and coming out on top compared to Japanese Scooby Doo. Don't get me wrong, I liked Persona 4, but it just wasn't the same.

>>385652347
Katawa Shoujo of course
Asphyxia hit pretty hard. I play/read it because my fiance was in the hospital thanks to her BPD at the time, so that was something.
>>385661984
same here. And I played 3 after playing 4.
>>385661609
okay well lets hope they put out another trailer next week or that shit aint happening.
Absolver says it's coming out at the end of the month too but IDK I think the trailer on their steam page is already a couple of months old so it's probably scrapped.
Both original Nier and Automata left the biggest emotional impact on me. And it's funny that Automata left a stronger one despite being actually uplifting in its message and with a satisfying, even happy closure to the story of main characters.
>>385662343
that is obviously not the same thing as concept storyboards released almost two years ago with radio silence after, but keep being obtuse if you want
Majora's Mask.
It was so short, I just wanted it to continue forever.
>>385655213
Didn't like that much MGS2&3 endings, for some reasons I felt that the best parts, happened before the last line. I marathoned 999-VLR and ZTD unfortunately so I didn't had that void feeling of when you finish a good game. Just a profound disappointement after finishing ZTD. Mother 3 hit me right in the feels though, from the start to the ending, it was a very well crafted game and story.

Blue Planet: War in Heaven. Non-stop depression, misery, and death all the way through, and the last part was a series of six frustrating gimmick missions (each with a different gimmick) that all took me about a hundred attempts, all while playing as a character that I utterly despised. One of the most miserable gaming experiences of my life.
Final Fantasy IX
>>385661984
I thought 3 had a much better and more emotional ending, but 4 felt more like a year long adventure to me. Probably because 70% of the plot of 3 happened in about 2 months.
>>385660739Yes, it connects perfectly although they won't push it down your throat and you will have to read documents if I recall to fully know this.

That's a weird reason to not play a game, considering that most of the Persona playerbase are lonely weebs.

I havent seen an ending that insufferable before or since
>>385652347
All of them.
>>385666183
Probably. Though at the same time I walked away from Persona 4 thinking "wow, absolutely nothing happened". They rescued some rascals from the tv in a pattern that never really changed and once your party was full you found the killer and saved the day. Having little plot for most of Persona 3 wasn't great either but it at least got super interesting at the end which meant it left a good last impression (which is pretty important in a JRPG, I guess).
>>385657465
