It's the only FM game which is actually good.

It has an interesting setting and multiple storylines. It's easy as fuck but not mindless. It has some customisability to add even more replay value.

I prefer the total clusterfuck that is 2, much larger scale battles, just a lot more going on in most departments and 5 is arguably the best overall game, 4 is pretty fucking ordinary, and 1 is simple, but solid.

2 is Front Mission: Tony Hawk Edition, even with emulator speed up, those battles scenes take fucking forever. It's like watching a Bethesda NPC trying to reach their mark, it's total clown shoes. And worse, you can't skip them because just finding an enemy's health not represented by varying shades of brown is a mess of menus.

Probably the best story though, save for maybe 4.

3 is the best in the series overall, the jump to PS2 should of been amazing but 4 is kinda meh in comparison to the love 3 got put into it, 5 stands out because of it's really good gameplay but it never got ported to the west or translated so you'll need to settle for emulation and a fan translation, worth playing though.

3 had so much love put into it for a ps1 title, the campaigns are fucking incredibly long and the animations for some of the special attacks we're great, 4 was a real letdown in this regard.

But you need watch them because the map UI represents part health by fucking colour shade, not a regular shifting bar, so you need to see the normal ass health representation in the battle scenes, elsewise you need to open up 3 layers of menu to find it.

Are there any good mech animes that have more a of a Front Mission/Battletech/Heavy Gear flavour to the mechs/action?

The HP UI wasn't great, but it was something you could eventually get used to. I'd rather put up with that than tripling the duration of the missions.

I did find Cartel fellow and his daughter's plot line to be pretty trite though, especially all the false deaths.

I didn't mind Saribash that much honestly, what didn't you like about him?
And yeah, Rocky was also handled extremely well, but every character was, even Sayuri or Griff, they're all very well written, Royd returning with his bros and being relevant to Thomas' squad and the general lore in that particular way was a great twist really, it was a bold move but it was written well and payed off greatly.

It's baffling how they went from such great characters to that joke of a cast they had in 3.

I want to get into Front Mission. I bought 4 but never finished it to me eternal shame. Is it worth the effort to play 5 if you don't know moonrunes? Also is the SNES version of 1 better or the DS?

There's a decent fanslation of 5, so just track down that one if you can't read moonrunes.

AFAIK the DS game is pretty much the same as the SNES one except it has a bonus campaign that plays from the perspective of the "enemy".

Fan Translation of 5 is solid and it emulates super well.

DS Version is better than the SNES version content wise, but the the fan translation of the SNES version is better than the localisation of the DS version.

If you can into moonrunes the PS1 version is the way to go.

5 was fantranslated some time ago. The DS version of 1 has an extra story you can play at any time. Aside from that. It's pretty much the same other then the translation which is different.

My problem with him is that at first he's presented as a morally ambiguous crook, a third party to the revolution who stood to gain by his actions. By the end he's a selfless revolutionary with morals too concrete for an armed revolt, in comparison to the blood mad Revolution and laughably incompetent and corrupt OCU. They squandered his potential to simplify the conflict and pave the way for Morgan "Agent Smith Was Onto Something" Bernard.

And everything with the daughter and the Revolution guy (it's been a while in case you couldn't tell) was silly and cliche.
