The addition of skills and free choice of classes was certainly a huge improvement and gave much more freedom and depth, even if some combinations were pretty silly.

At least a lot of the combinations that work also somewhat make sense in-universe. A Dark Elf Paladin isn't a very good Paladin, a High Elf Necromancer might be a good necromancer, but not really better than any other wizard without synergies and certainly not better than an Undead. Plague Lord Paladin is the only silly one that works because of skill combinations. Merchants just work.

Wargame Red Dragon has two sides, but plenty of coalitions and nations, that change further with optional specialisations.
