Why do games nowadays try so hard to be as hard as Dark Souls?

Games aren't about passion or quality anymore: they are products, mass-manufactured.

Dark souls reinvigorated the feeling of accomplishment from beating a widely considered difficult game by complete accident. All of the games other qualities(which made the game good) were overshadowed by it being socially spread as a difficult game. The good parts about the game were just icing on the cake compared to being able to beat darksouls and then being able to talk about all those moments that you died with friends or on social outlets.

Dark Souls became it's own advertisement among a large player base which is what every game strives to be. Game companies will drop millions on advertising just to accomplish the same goal and get no where close to the same results.

Tldr Dark Souls became it's own meme.
