What's a good entry point for racing games?

I have always enjoyed some good sci-fi racers, like F-Zero and Wipeout, but I don't have much experience with games focusing on real cars.

I think I would prefer arcade mechanics to a racing sim.

I like it but it's too big for casual multiplayer games, it's pretty clear in the first few minutes who's going to be in the top 3 and the race is practically decided from there because the people in front will never run into traffic. Even worse if you start near the bottom of the grid for whatever reason you have to fight all that traffic while the front pack just plays time trial mode on an empty track.

Cayuga is probably the best track around your area to learn real driving on, and it's pretty cheap for evenings. Really no consequences for mistakes there, when I was learning heel toe I went in the grass like 3 times there in one day.

If you're driving something that has relatively little motor like a BRZ or something you can still run Mosport on certain lapping days, JRP runs a pretty cheap one with beginner and advanced sessions, usually the beginners are pulling laps like 1:45+ at mosport which for comparison, a Nissan Micra on slicks record lap was a 1:43.

Advanced drivers group on those days are usually running 1:35 to 1:40 which is still very slow considering it's mostly rich chinese dudes running $300,000 ferraris and shit their parents bought them.

It was the last instalment to have a rewarding arcade mode before they just made it into an exhibition mode for the cars you unlocked with no progression.

Your mentality will play into it a lot, if you go out and know exactly what your goal is, what the line to take is, and why you take that line, you can go out and do everything at a very slow pace.

Yeah you're gonna be slow compared to others but you're going to be doing it right, the people who have the catastrophic fuck ups are people who go into lapping days with expensive cars on slicks, ignore the race line and then proceed to go faster and faster on terrible driving.

The real way to get into it is to start slow, on street tires, and just slowly get going faster and faster.

It's also good to choose a flat track you never really get going too fast on, something technical but low speed is great for learning since it puts you through the ringer without allowing you to go fast enough to damage yourself or your car in the event of a colossal fuckup.

But I can't stress enough learning proper lines, without them you just end up like the guys who drive around on slicks off line diving the brakes super late thinking that's how you go fast not realizing they always have shitty exits as a result.

Has anyone here got the nerve to play full length races in the Formula 1 games?

I find I have to concentrate so fucking hard just to not go off and it's so taxing and then I also have to manage tyres and defend from the guy behind and I can't take it

I did this back in the day. One of the PS2 games, I think. Got through half a season before moving on to different things.

The key is to run the race for the experience, not the gamified rewards the game gives you for coming in first. I'd rather have an intense race and come in 9th than be dodging AI cars all race just to come in first.
