This is a thread for games focused on Dungeons and crawling through them.

>Wizardry and Wizardry Clones like 90% of Atlus games
>Dungeon Crawls like Grimrock and Eye of the Beholder
>Games with a large emphasis on the dungeon, like Legend of Zelda or La Mulana
All games about Dungeons are welcome here.

Right now, I've just started up Grimrock 2, and so far I'm enjoying it. The outdoors section is a nice change of pace, and I think I enjoy the stat system far more than Grimrock 1. I dunno why I hear so many people complain about 2.
>>
Who complains about Grimrock 2? It's a massive improvement over the first and one of the best games in the genre imo.

Have a (You), you deserve it. I don't play dungeon crawlers, unless they're 3D action dungeon crawlers like the Bitterblack Isle part of Dragon's Dogma or Vagrant Story, but I do play roguelikes and picrelated was a pretty fun dungeoneering experience.
>>
>>385627716
I like arx Fatalis.

wish they'd make another but with the same sort of depth,

sadly if they made another it would be designed around consoles, and thus eliminate the interesting/frusterating magic system (you draw runes on screen with your mouse, you can easily mess them up though)

Arx Fatalis is just an interesting setting because it's like a blend of fantasy and post-apocalypse

Turn based rogue-like. The death penalty is kind of a non-issue. You can mark several pieces of equipment to survive your death, as you enhance this feature you eventually get to keep one from almost all slots.

Before dying you are reduced to 1hp and you always get an escape-dungeon-feather you can use to get out.

What I really didn't like about this and why I never finished it were the fucking fire wizards. Being wizards they hit ridiculously hard. They have priority on movement and full screen range so pretty much every encounter they get to roast you at least once. They can teleport and since they have priority it means you can in to attack them and than find yourself missing because they warp away.

I lost so many runs the these guys just showing up and fucking my shit up with no real counter play. The best I found was to use stones that nuke the whole screen so theres no safe place for their teleport. Trouble is these stones are rare and towards they end these guys just come at you like your giving out free beer

>>385631641
Because early Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy which every Japanese boy EVER in the 80s and 90s played were copies of wizardry 1-5.

As far as the Japs were concerned that is how an RPG is and should be. By the time any more advanced WRPGs were sent to the Japan had already made a million JRPGs copying the mold that FF and Dragon Quest showed them and everyone and their loli-imouto-tsunade-mother in Japan expected that.

Even to this day the nips still just make copies of wizardry 1-5. Their idea of innovation is adding a super meter to each character that plays a 30 second cutscene.
>>
>>385633127
>Because early Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy which every Japanese boy EVER in the 80s and 90s played were copies of wizardry 1-5.

More precisely: They were copies of both Ultima and Wizardry, taking the most mundane features of both and leaving out the fun interactivity.

I think one of the best things about the program is that you can give it the cloth maps and it'll use them on the over world before you walk to places of interest. It's pretty neat having a less exact frame of reference before you go exploring. I believe it works for the first 5 games as well.

With the default party it shouldn't be that difficult. Just remember sleep is your friend and will often put an entire troop to sleep. The magic system is fun to exploit in MM1 once you get used to it.

This program does have a nice hack that gives all party members the max stat gains which you might as well leave on because rng can ruin a character if you're not careful.

>>
>>385640423
It's not really a bug. It's just how the game is designed. It measures movement in squares, not steps. The slight awkwardness of it is sort of justified by the idea that you're playing as four people who are shackled to each other, so you don't have quite the same freedom of movement you'd normally have. I didn't find it that hard to get used to.
>>

Am I the only one who didn't like Pikmin 2?
Recently rebought the first with wiimote support and decided to get around to pirating the second game, and it lacks like 80% of the charm of the original.
The overworld is pretty boring, there's no puzzles and the leveldesign seems bland. The dungeons are alright I suppose, hopefully they get better further into the game (I'm a bit more than halfway).
Have you played pikmin 3? Heard it was more like 1 than 2.

>>
>>385641481

>>
>>385641551
>sort of justified by the idea that you're playing as four people who are shackled to each other
It's even more justified by the fact that it's a tile based game, so you do things by tile instead of holding the button down like a monkey trying to figure out how buttons work.
>>
>>385641196
I hate it when games does this, in my opinion it goes against every principle of video game design. The worst offenders are bosses that can't be killed, but if you die you have to restart the fight, and the only way to proceed is to let the fight drag on for a certain amount of time without giving you any indication of this.
>>
>>385641369
I beat it anon, I tried going through it again but the battle pacing needs to be speeded up a smidge. Also desperately needs a 5th character spot.

I'm curious, are there any decent rougelikes on Steam?
All I can think of is Caves of Qud, and Dungeons of Dredmore.

Hard to find rougelikes when anything with a randomized map and permadeath claims that title nowadays.
>>
>>385641626
Because it's old school and reminds you of simpler times. Times where things could exist for their own sake instead of having to be fancy and pretentious.

But those times are gone anon. You can never get them back, even things from that era are a shallow imitation of themselves when stripped from the context of their time. Chasing those memories of something that no longer exists will only lead to despair. It's all gone. All gone forever.
>>
>>385640801
This is now my phone tone. Thank you friend.
>>
Legend of Grimrock was fun, but it did get annoying having to always look at every wall piece to make sure you didn't miss a secret switch. The controls aren't really great for that. And then there are the secret switches that only appear once or twice in the whole game, look different, and appear on a different part of the wall.

I was also somewhat irritated by that one puzzle that requires you to have some very specific clutter items that there's a good chance you've discarded because they've had no real use so far and it's late in the game, so you're starting to run out of inventory space. It was annoying to have to run around for 20 minutes trying to remember where I dropped that skull to make room for some food.

The problem is you're playing Japanese games. Only Japanese games have that kind of bad design, the kind that stems from an almost inhuman misunderstanding of how things should work. I didn't like Grimrock 2 too much. Good dungeon and enemy design, but the RPG mechanics were very bad. The classes and races are very imbalanced. Grimrock 1 had this problem as well, so it's disappointing that they didn't seem to learn much. That said I would probably still recommend it for someone to buy if they could get it on sale.
>>
>>385642761
There's no need to rush and buy ToME, it's actually free on their website, the Steam release was asked for by fans to have all the steam benefits of achievements, workshop and all that.
Base game is enough to last months-to-years without addons. Not to mention you aren't supposed to play the addon without finishing base game, and having it turned on will make your life miserable.
>>
>>385642892
You don't have to, it's enough for elements of the time to have latched onto your psyche for it to take hold. From that, you can extrapolate the rest. People from the 60s who didn't go to Woodstock are still taken back to that time by hearing about it, because it's the spirit of the time that digs into your mind, not just the individual parts of it.

It's not real. That's a fan-made dungeon using Daggerfall Tools for Unity. He was testing his dungeon generator by making massive dungeons with 30+ internal blocks. The largest dungeons in vanilla Daggerfall have like 8-10, and those are the main quest dungeons which are more square shaped in general than that image, so there's far fewer border blocks used to close them off.

Don't get me wrong, Daggerafll's dungeons are still ridiculously over-sized and difficult to navigate, but even the worst of them are a small fraction of the size of that thing.

This game is a fucking incredible dungeon crawler. It even makes all the fanservice not incredibly cringe-inducing by having the MC basically go 'no way, fag' to every instance and then enslave whoever did it.

Combine that with a lot of different build options, team synergy, and free infinite resets at level breakpoints makes building your party a lot of fun.

Dungeons are generally pretty high quality, though some of them have bullshit high encounter rates that gets entirely tedious samsara

works fine, probably the best game to start with
>KF3 (JP)/KF2
works fine, hasn't held up as well as the one right before it
>Shadow Tower
works ok-ish
>KF4 (JP)/KF: The Ancient City
works in PCSX2, but not especially well. some weird problems with clipping and textures on moving geometry, slowdown in some larger zones, and an especially weird bug in two mid-game zones where it fails to reload an area you just left when you return to it so you walk through a door and abruptly fall into an empty void forever. This can be fixed by messing with the EE rounding mode, but is still a hassle.

I know you're fishing for replies here but that game is a fucking sham. It's literally just a grind game a la dynasty warriors. There's absolutely no way to complete the game on a single life, it's just a matter of dying over and over until you've leveled up your skills to the point that the game is a cakewalk. Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, Arx Fatalis, System Shock 1 and 2 and Prey. Maybe Dark Messiah of Might and Magic though I'm not sure I'd really call that a dungeon crawler.

Those are most of the classical style dungeon crawlers that don't have grid-based movement. If you're willing to expand your definition of dungeon crawler to non-First Person games, there's stuff like Ys Origin, Spelunky, Castlevania, Metroid, etc.
>>
>>385656076
EO5 is a definite. DT2 probably. The others maybe but I'm guessing Vita localisations of games that don't also have PC/PS4 ports are going to start going the way of the dodo soon.

I liked DD1 though the sheer amount of payed DLC really put me off, and the fact that their "official" servers had more P2W equipment. I think it got to the point where people were making their own maps just to powerlever characters because the grind was too extreme.
