yeah, if you use cygwin you have to modify some of the code to get it to work on windows. i'm using the WSL on win10, so i don't have any issues running linux-only stuff

really about the same as 7 i find, you can install patch theme files for custom VS', use rainmeter, ive seen some people get bbzero to work too (although it doesnt officially support win10, yet)

outside of that you can use WSL + an x server to go a good bit deeper. i'm using polybar and dunst in my screenshot, but i've also successfully ran linux WM's like openbox on top of windows (pic related). it tends to be kind of slow (running youtube on an X firefox causes the whole thing to lag), but i reckon it'll be more viable in the future.

Most files could be transfered. Any of the microsoft files and programs wouldn't work though unless you get them working in Wine. It would be a good idea to make a copy of the Microsoft folders incase you need some of the drivers in Wine and you can't find them through Winetricks.

Wine works for most popular things that are Microsoft only, but ya, it still comes at a performance price and there still may be bugs here and there. Anything that is important though can be replaced by a linux compatible program. The only thing your losing are some game titles, but is that worth staying on the Microsoft botnet? They have tons of programs in that protected folder that they don't tell you anything about and your left wondering what the fuck they are there for.
