Chickenwalkers aren't any more realistic than Gundams, they're just uglier
Hell Gundams are in space half of the time, where half of the problems mechs have don't even apply
>>
>>385607050

Not really. /m/ doesn't really argue about whether or not mecha are feasible in real life either because most people know how flawed the idea is in the first place. I don't think anyone on /m/ genuinely believes a Gundam could work in real life.

Why does /m/ have its own board? What a silly thing to dedicate an entire board too. I know that mechfags are GENERALLY speaking on the lower functioning end of the autism spectrum, but still I wouldn't think there'd be enough demand for it to actually have its own board, when something like pro wrestling has to be squeezed into """alternative""" """""""sports"""""""
>>
>>385607396
If /m/ was still allowed on /a/ it would take up half the board, and most of the discussion is related to older shows. It's basically the equivalent of /vr/.
>>
>>385607396
/m/ also has Sentai and Toku threads.
>>
>>385607436
make a /mech/ general and condense it all into one thread. then put the toy shit in /toy/ and the live action shows in either /jp/ or /tv/

>>
>>385607543
>make a /mech/ general and condense it all into one thread
Mecha, Sentai and Toku span almost 70 years of Japanese media history. What you're asking is to condense such broad varying topics into one thread, it would be a complete clusterfuck. Gundam TV series, Gundam Manga, Gundam movies, Gunpla, the latest Super Sentai, older Super Sentai, Power Rangers, the latest Kamen Rider, older Kamen Rider, Patlabor getting a new series, Mechwarrior, Battletech, Harmony Gold getting shit on, is Evangelion mecha? etc.

/m/ unanimously agrees Build Fighters S1 is one of the greatest Gundam series ever made, so you don't have to worry about that. But Wing definitely gets the most hate, and I think it's because it easily has one of the greatest roster of mobile suits ever created for the franchise, and then they were all wasted with a plot that makes you want to kill yourself because of how bad it is. The Tallgeese was quite frankly WASTED.

Bipedal armored vehicles and tanks or mechs or whatever are all impossible.
The main reason being unless you move at high enough speeds, the unbalance of walking one step at a time would tip the vehicle over.

The only solution to this is to give the mech a tail or some other form of counter-balance.
Metal Gear RAY has the right idea.

you don't get it either. so allow me to explain why you're retarded, with some key definitions:

Surface Area - amount of 2D area a given object has
Volume - amount of 3D space an object takes
Weight - relation of an object's mass with the effect of gravity
Pressure - amount of force over a given area

imagine we have a cube of length 1 m with a density of 1 kg/m^3. it has a volume of 1 m^3 and a weight of 9.8 N. this object is applying 1 P of pressure. it also has a total surface area of 6 m^2. so now we increase the length/width/height by 1 meter.

this new cube has a volume of 8 m^3 and a weight of
78.4 N. this has a total surface area of 24 m^2. the resulting pressure is now 3.27 P. lets do this again, only by a factor of 100.

the new cube now has a volume of 1,000,000 m^3 and a weight of 9,800,000 N. a total surface area of 60,000 m^2. resulting pressure is now 163.3 P.

did you notice how much faster the weight was rising with each slight increase? this cube has a large surface area so the pressure remained pretty low. ants do not have large feet, so the resulting pressure is vastly increase due to it's small surface area. it's exoskeleton is not designed to take that much weight. it would crush itself when enlarged enough.

tl;dr, you're fucking stupid.
>>
>>385610187
I just like mechs of any variation. I like a lot of their designs too and can't get it from other places. I understand where the discussion about practicality comes from, but I'm surprised people get hung up on it to the point it affects their enjoyment. It's fine if someone wants to avoid mechs because they prefer grounded realism, but it's hard to accept their preference that way when they are okay with magic, mythical creatures, and other fictional themes and doesn't question those practicalities. I've had conversations like that and they're generally not good. It usually goes down to "it's not them fighting" when referring to mechs.
>>
>>385611172
>You'd say the same thing when you looked at a tank and though "where the fuck is all the ammo?"

if you look at a tank with an automatic loader you quickly notice that it's fucking big and the ammo is easy to locate on the schematic

only early WW2 tanks with peashooters and "please set fire to me"-tier ammo storage could stick shells all over the place

oh and i forgot to mention the resulting forces due to wind on it's entire surface area. sounds trivial when small, but the larger you get the more force is felt. that's the primary reason why parachutes help you to stop dying or why high rise buildings need strong structural integrity.

P(ower) = E/t, where t is the time in seconds giving us roughly 29 megawatts of power or roughly three times that of the first nuclear submarine's reactor output. This of course does not take into consideration air resistance and losses within the system.

>but that's with minovsky particles being all magical

Minovsky particles are for the most part realistic, they simply stretch the truth the same way Star Trek does.

The shit exists, but it's extremely rare, hard to create and has a half life of nothing.
It's the same as Star Trek's "FTL". Yes, the drive works in theory, but you need lots of antimatter, something we do not have.
>>
>>385612851
I thought the Alcubierre drive needed strange matter with negative mass rather than antimatter (particles have same mass but opposite charge than their counterpart).
>>
>>385612494

Dude just because we use autocannons and MechWarrior uses them doesn't mean we're talking about the same thing. Their autocannons have multiple projectiles in the barrel which doesn't really make sense from a usefulness standpoint. You need the round to go through the entire barrel to get velocity, otherwise the physics of each round coming out will be very different. However, metal storm weapons do the same thing irl so it's not unheard of.

/m/ is more of an containment board for Toku/Sentai shits than a place to discuss mecha.

They are best suited for 0 gravity.

It comes at the cost, however. Spaceships as per Free Space, Star Wars, Star Trek, Freelancer and so on are all absolutely impractical.
Big vessels in space are practically all giant globes, human manned vessels are robots.
No cool aircraft-like ships, just robots.

That gets destroyed by a laser AMS fed to the reactor that essentially gives it infinite ammo. Meanwhile, since the mech has height advantage over you, your position has been known to the pilot all along, even before you fired the round, he just didn't give enough fucks about some infantry cuck, however, since you've exposed yourself as an actual threat, however minuscule, he fries your retarded ass with a medium laser from above at an angle that makes all low cover useless.

Pretty much. The funny thing is, as big as a threat as they were for Victorian England, they wouldn't stand a chance against modern weapons.
They heat rays, and chemical warfare, while incredibly devastating to infantry and the like, are mostly useless against drone and missile strikes.

I think the military was just blustering when they put down the Tripods back in the '50s. Considering we wouldn't know what the fuck was going on initially in the event of an invasion, just like the characters in the book, there would be a good few hours or so for the Martians to get their shit together and prepare for an armed response.

If they could be angled quickly enough, each Tripod's Heat Ray could basically serve as a CIWS superior to anything currently available. Consider how fucked the Afghans or Iraqis are trying to use mortar attacks on embedded American bases - the Phalanx (R2-D2) systems just shred anything short of overwhelming barrages.

Mobile, energy-based CIWS systems combined with chemical weapon-loaded rockets and flexible combat tentacles, along with even a modicum of air support (flying machines were also mentioned in the book) would result in some pretty formidable shit even without "force fields" introduced in the movie versions.

Rockets, bombs, and mortars certainly wouldn't be getting through in most cases. Heavier cannons might have enough projectile mass to bust through the beams. Just pounding them with smoke and sand clouds of our own might also be enough to disperse the heat beams. Humans would definitely eventually win through strength of numbers, but it would be a close-fought thing.

Mechs would be absolutely shit in urban environments, our roads/streets would simply collapse.

You know the videos of chinks falling into holes in the street?

It'd be exactly like that, but on a huge scale.

Tank tracks and wheels are objectively better in urban environments for anything really heavy because they spread the weight of the vehicle out over a greater area, a mech walking in the street would constantly be punching holes in and through it and routinely getting it's legs stuck.

Tank tracks are absolutely horrible for urban environments. They are as retarded as large legs are in this regard.
They destroy the roads, they get fucked up by the road surface in return.
Depending on the materials, there have been numerous cases of them melting once the roads got too hot because of pressure and shit.

No, tanks are absolutely not fit for urban enviornments. That is without adding the fact rolling a tank into a city is by far the single most imbecile thing you could do today as infantry eats this shit for breakfast in close quarters.

Which part of it's a bad idea do you not understand?

Remember when they had to re-base the streets on which James Bond shot his tank chase?
Likewise, that tank of yours is a prop. The real deal would have to be sent back to base to unfuck the gears after that sort of usage.

Tanks are massive, expensive pieces of shit to keep around. They eat through fuel at an astonishing pace. For every shot they take, they throw their track several times and require replacements each time.
They are extremely delicate machinery used for a brutal smack in the face. They suck for extended campaigns, they suck in most terrains, they suck in most engagements.

That's what tanks are. Expensive sledgehammer made out of obsidian.
Require extra care and attention (to say nothing of money) to make anything and also require great strategic thought to send them out ONLY when the situation allows it.
>>
>>385619476
The problem with guns is that they are too damn powerful. Stoping the bullet is the least of your worries, its the impact that most guns are designed for that gets you. Even with armor or ballistics, they can still tear your bones into pieces and those pieces become shards cutting your insides like a hot knife through butter turning your insides to mush.

Both of those require science and materials that doesn't exist yet. Prototype powered exoskeletons are a thing but they're just used for assistance with lifting heavy objects and they're nowhere near anything you would put on a soldier in the front line.
Maybe with super dense energy storage, very strong and lightweight motors and electronics, but then someone might just make a better gun and then that armour is useless.

The fuck are you going on about?

I don't care what state a tank leaves a road in, the point is that whilst a tank can functionally drive down literally any urban street, a fuck huge mech would literally collapse the underlying infrastructure, sewers, storm water and render itself fucking useless with every step.

The exact same thing happens with cranes when they begin to tip, suddenly the weight is no longer spread out and is instead focused entirely on a small area and voila, into the earth they go.

Mechs amplify the very problem that tracks mitigate.

If you wanna go over the top, might as well go all the way.
Walkers are just tanks with legs, which is just enough to make you question why they dont just take tanks in the first place.
Mechas are over the top flying space fighter killing machines, who have the weapon arsenal of a destroyer and ignore gravitational physics. They are pictured so powerfull, that you don't even question why tanks cant compete with them.

Also "going fast" will always be more interesting to play and watch then just 2 slow walking huge cannons/lasers.

Inclined to agree with you, but I'd say they're not totally unfeasible if two conditions are fulfilled; #1 that we develop nuclear fusion technology a la Fallout in the form of highly compact cells capable of outputting suitable amounts of energy for an extended period of time, and #2 that defensive technology such as energy shields and active countermeasures also becomes a reality. In that case, we genuinely could wind up having militaries made up of mechs or at the very least, powered armor/battlesuits because the combat doctrine would switch from thick armor and long range combat, to high speed and maneuverability in closer quarters.

Objectively speaking, you're the one acting as though you're incapable of understanding the experiences of humans who aren't you given the frequency of the realism argument in this very thread and your inability to notice it because it wasn't you who made those posts.

REX makes sense because its armaments were more for supporting combat teams that would have been around to protect it in the event that enemy forces drew near, it's main role would be as a mobile nuclear launch platform like every other Metal Gear. Of course REX's railgun could have also been modified for non-nuclear artillery support.

Mechs having hands allows for consistent compatibility between all new weapon platforms and allows for efficient loadout changes before deploying. You don't have to worry about an old mech being incompatible with a new homing rocket system if it can just pick it up and pull the trigger.

It's not self-sufficient. Who is leaving robot sized small arms all over the place? Who is reloading and maintaining them? Why have a massive selection when you're part of a modern army (and you have to be to afford them) and are operating as part of a combined arms force? Is your enemy using equipment that's compatible with your robot?

Trust me, I absolutely adore giant robots, but they're not practical in any way.
