Yeah, but you can ignore Draining Whip and just cast something whenever your Focus is full to get that damage bonus back, while mostly using it as a damage buff instead of as a means of casting. I played a melee Cipher build through the original like that, and it was fine, but it wasn't as enjoyable as I would've liked since I always felt Ciphers were primarily oriented to be casters.
I'm hoping that with multiclassing being included in Deadfire I will be able to create a Cipher build that focuses almost entirely on fucking people up with the damage bonus from Soul Whip, only casting when I need to burn off some Focus - like accuracy and endurance bonuses from a Cipher/Fighter, or an extra damage bonus from a Cipher/Rogue flanking. Imagine a Cipher/Barbarian that got AoE Soul Whip (even at a reduced percentage) - it would be both powerful and fun as fuck for the ultimate in rip and tear which is why balance man will never let it happen

Fomr the expansions were more guilty of this than the main campaign (which was waaaaay to easy).
Take winter march 1 for example. Some enemies, like the cragg ogres, ice trolls, elementals and human/dwarves/etc. are a walk in the park, but any area with the laguhfaet, or whatever the fuck their name was, is a fucking pain in the ass thanks to constant paralization and their priest casting the blue flames buffs and attacks. And this is just going from one area to the other. Start the expansion, attack on the village (easy)----> the forest (easy)---> ogre caves easy---- the falls (FUCKING HARD)---> outside the fortress (easy again)

Its distracting because the voiced characters says his dialogue and at the same time you can read what he says, but its cluttered with sentences about the enviroment and yadada in the same paragraph. It's a good roleplaying game. Having a co-op buddy just makes the roleplaying more unique.
It's more hardcore though, so you can't exactly run around anywhere you want because enemies will slap your ass hard early on.

It's really not.
You just have to read or just hover the mouse over the enemy to see it's level.
The game has a set way for you to take and the only way to deviate from it is to abuse the diplomatic encounters by playing that shitty rock paper scissors game and then backstab the enemies you just convinced to walk away which allows you to be overleveld.
The game is honestly easy as fuck even after they fixed all the broken talents.
Also the roleplaying isn't that great because the writing itself isn't that great.

The game was praise because of it's combat and it had excellent music, but everything else was mediocre.
The joke where that earth elemental showed you how your adventure would end was top tier tho.

not even close, I take you haven't played bg1 or TOEE. Entangle for example slows everyone and holds if they fail their save so that group of 10 hobgoblins becomes 5 held enemies, 3 are in melee reach and the other 2 won't reach you before you kill the other 3.

In Pillars CC is nerfed as fuck and the best you can hope for is something like 10 seconds if you crit and the AoE is small as fuck

An Intelligence Cipher can easily lock down fights. You need to recast now and then, but that's what Ciphers are good at. It's even easier with Wizard support or a second Cipher.

I never got too far into Neverwinter Nights, but I'm thinking about playing through it. I do remember liking that, at least in the beginning of the game, the main threat was the undead.

I really liked those sections in Baldur's Gate 2 going into crypts, fighting zombies, liches, and vampires too. I'm wondering if there's some of that in Pillars as well?

Base Pillars was probablyjust a bit better than Vanilla NW2 (better than NW1 vanilla obviously).
But it still surprised me how it meaningful moments for your companions or just way to handle big moments and pace the quests.
Compare how the Stronghold was used(bonuses and quests related), how the trial vs animancy hearings occur, how the actually big twist and backbone of the campaign is not revealed in the last second, how companions can betray you or how you affect their outlook and the game shows it beyond an ending slide (I actually struggle to decide if I will make Khelgar monk).

Even expansion wise, you have White March 1&2 vs Storms of Zehir and Mask of Betrayer

Ciphers do get so many roleplaying opportunities and you are flexible with your weapon choice, so I can see why someone would pick it.

I picked wizard and was both satisfied and disappointed. It's extremely strong as a class, but I felt almost no sense of progression, since they were determined to make sure each level had good spells, it made it less exciting to get new spells.
