If you're using JSawyer and playing on Very Hard like you're supposed to, it doesn't matter if you "nut up", you're doing shit for damage against too many different targets. Unless you cheese the fuck out of the AI, you're going to lose. Like you should. There should absolutely be instances in games where you cannot win. Going to a high level area as a low level is one of those instances.

And it's not "can't handle" it, it's tired of handling it. The set up for the game isn't 25 minutes, it's hours. Unless you're using the baby vanilla XP values, you're going to be level 4 around your 5th hour of play. Primm is set up. NCRCF is set up. Nipton is set up. Novac is set up. RobCo is set up. All the open fields of mutated animals is set up.

I just did about a week ago. Here's my thoughts so far.

The Good
1. Some of the factions are pretty interesting
2. Weapon mods
3. The DT system
4. Skill checks actually being useful

The Bad
1. The game feels empty as shit. The biggest offenders are the casinos on the strip, of the 6 or so tables only one or two will be populated. The ambient sounds they play only serve to make the place feel more weird and empty.
2. The amount of walking to get around some locations is too much. Doing the quest to get This Machine in camp McCarran made me want to commit suicide.
3. You can't put weapon mods on unique weapons by default, making modded regular weapons arguably superior in some cases.
4. The amount of content split between the separate factions is pretty strange. The legion has nearly no content despite being the second biggest faction in the mojave. House has pretty much no quests besides the "get this faction on my side or kill them" quests. The fucking Boomers feel more fleshed out than most other factions.
5. Despite using a couple bug fixing mods the game is still buggy as hell. If the thorn would stop bugging out every fight that would be great.
6. Cazadores. Why?

Overall I would say it's overrated but I'm enjoying it a fair bit. I'm about to start the DLC which I heard is pretty great.

You're in for some basic mods to start you off. Install FOMM and get the YUP bugfix patch and the Improved Performance V5 mod. That's it for a vanilla playthrough.

When playing NV on my laptop, I was very glad to use some mods that gave basic improvements. I too know that pain man, before getting a PC that could run it a long ass time ago. Only way to get a PS3 save into high hours was to basically turn off all the autosaves, stop playing every hour or two to turn off the system and restart the game to do the clear cache thing. Just do a clinic run dude. Once you get to neil's shack, start sneaking and sneak along the line where the terrain is black on one side and brown on the other, like where black mountain terrain begins. Then drop down once you hit the big bend in the roadway. Move east till you see a NCR corpse, take everything on it, then go through that little goat path north that's full of bear traps (dodge them,) watch out for falling rocks, and bam, you're right on top of the NCR safehouse, and can just continue north into new vegas without facing any enemies.

What mods are essential for just generally improving the overall experience?
Already played New Vegas for a hundred hours or so years back but never finished it and got bored after the DLC bored me to death and made me overpowered even with stunted leveling.
Not concerned with graphics mods since I can barely play it at 60 as it is.

It probably will, they re-released skyrm and it seems like New Vegas has a bigger surviving following. I just hope they dont fuck with the core of the game and maybe add some of the stuff obsidian was planning on adding but didnt get to.

Why is it so easy to enter Mr. House's conservation chamber or whatever-it's-called? A vip card opens that? The platinum chip, which's usefulness has nothing to do with that? Makes no sense.

My character was just very sheltered by her family her whole life. Didnt see Much violence until shit hit the fan one day and she lost her parents and only brother. It traumatized her really bad so she developed a fear of people and being outside in general. But due to circumstances she was forced to explore. Seeing dead bodies and people suffering and whatnot triggers her drug and alcohol use. But very slowly she is toughening up to the harsh world. I could go more into detail for hours but yeah, its fun playing as someone with extreme issues in this game.

I am playing right now, have about 135 hours on my "actually finish the story and DLCs" playthrough. I keep going back and forth on whether I want to play an unarmed or energy weapons character. Curse the console for being so easy to use and my awful indecisiveness.

Mine was raised by a wandering group of wastelanders. They weren't tribals, because they lived in California and understood they were a part of the Republic. However, they were nomads going from one place to another, unwilling to deal with NCR restrictions but also unable to survive without their protection. In this small society there were no families. Everyone fucked with everyone so technically all the kids where the children of all. That way they were all a huge family. Everyone had their own function; traders, defenders, etc.
Once you reached a certain age you were free to leave the pack and look for your own destiny.
My Courier was born there and raised as a collective child. She was too weak to be a fighter but also too dim to be a thinker. So she just was a delivery girl of sorts, transporting packages and such between the her family and settlements. Eventually, trying to prove her worth to herself she abandoned the group and traveled all across California, through New Reno, Vault City, Fort Aradesh and such, until at the Den (I think it was the Den, or maybe the Hub) she accepted to carry the Plantinum Chip to Vegas. Of course, she lost it to Benny, and she's been obsessed since then to get it back, not to get revenge on Benny; she's already forgiven him. She wants to complete her delivery because she's terrified of failing at the one thing she's ever been good as. Since most missions in the game consist on retrieving certain items and taking them somewhere else, she's always willing to work with that. The only missions she rejects are assassination contracts. I intend to go for the House ending since he was her original employer and her contract isn't done with him.

Well, you can roleplay as yourself, but you need to place yourself in the setting. After all, you've been living in the wasteland your entire life. You'll probably be a little tougher than you are now.
And if going to get the chip back for revenge isn't a good motivation for you, remember that your contract states that mercenaries will be sent after you for fucking up the delivery. That can be your motivation to get it back.
