Yes it's basically a remake of the first yakuza game.

Tho you can also start with Yakuza 0 instead of waiting for Kiwami to come out. Yakuza 0 is easily the best Yakuza game.

Yes. It does change some things for the worse from original game, but if you have no point of reference, you're not gonna notice.

Zero is literally the prequel, and gives backstory to characters who didn't get much of it in other games. It also works as really unapogalectic gangster flick, with characters dying left and right.

It's literally a remake of the first game in the series. Though they added few story parts related to Y0.
Also Y0 is more quality.

It's very different from Sleeping Dogs, there's no car driving at all.
But I enjoyed both a whole lot for separate reasons.

I'd say Sleeping Dogs tried to be western Yakuza but Yakuza is so much better with its confidence in wacky humor, style, and fight intensity
