I wouldn't call it perfect but I thought it was pretty great. I see people complain about the backtracking but I never really got bored, I guess they probably could have used a Stag Station in the Ancient Basin but that would render the already pretty tacked on Tram system completely pointless.

Backtracking is to be expected, it's the genre's mainstay, the problem is the Hollow Knight's backtracking is tedious and unfun.
