Knack was not inheritly bad, it's actually decent coop game and it still manages to hit 1M+ not including the bundles sales. Also Cerny's budget was not that big compared to other launch IPs hence it was enough to be convince Sony to make a sequel.

I watched Knack 2 gameplay and it just looks fine. I expected it to be so awful that it became a meme to like it, but again it just looks fine.
