Peace Walker was pretty small potatoes in terms of narrative impact. It built off what MGS4 already established while also delivering an admittedly quite stupid story. Its biggest problem is being so redundant. We already knew why the Boss did what she did and what made her so different from Big Boss; we didn't need to revisit that with an A.I.

MGS4 was a more grandiose disaster, I think.

Huey was the best character in MGSV because he was the only one with an arc, he was the only one who made the player feel anything.

Remember how Quiet's story ended? It was so nothing, even though the game was yelling that it was so sad. Skullface was literally nothing, Man on Fire reduced a genuinely interesting character into a spooky zombie ghost, and Venom's twist retroactively made you car even LESS about the story.

At least when you hate Huey, you feel something.

It had no narrative weight because her motivations didn't make any sense. She was a CIA agent until Big Boss kicked her out of a building and burned her skin off. Now she's in love with him (for some reason) to the point of dooming herself to an excruciating death for him. The entire arc hinges on how strongly she's loyal to him, but we never see why, or get a good explanation of why she's betraying Cipher.

Quiet felt like an uncanny valley sexbot who happened to find a sniper rifle. Losing the support chopper made me sadder than her death.

MGS4 and PW both have stories defined by a kind of soapy self-obsession that gets tedious, and this leaks into MGSV as well. Ocelot's motivations are just "boy I like Big Boss and Outer Heaven sounds neat," everything is reduced to the posthumous influence of a lady whose significance was most poignant with the contrast to Big Boss MGS3 already made the point of hammering home, Otacon's dad and Snake's dad worked together in Kojima's most George Lucasian inspired writing, and so on. There's plenty more I could pick at.

The game play doesn't fare much better. MGS4 is even more poorly balanced than MGS3, and it's also too concerned with giving the player bombastic setpieces to do the things MGS3 did right. PW is crippled by terrible AI and the worst balancing the series has ever had (and no, the PSP's hardware isn't really an excuse).

Both games do have their merits, but I can't say I love them.

Wrong. In my honest opinion, the twist shouldn't have happened at the end of the game, because the story -- for me -- was better knowing the twist as soon as it began. The second you realize that Venom was a genuinely good person who unwillingly sacrificed his identity, his morality, and even his sanity for a "hero" he idolized that sold him out and used an entire hospital as a meat-shield and used Venom's adventure as a smoke screen... you realize that Venom is a tragic hero and Big Boss was already the villain all along, especially when Venom looks back on his experience with Big Boss and sees Naked Snake's previous actions in a demonic light.

Wrong. Quiet was an XOF assassin who located and tried to kill Venom and Big Boss, having the two mixed up -- but after she was sent on fire and thrown from a window, her destiny changed. Not unlike the player/Venom was used as a tool for a sketchy asshole, Quiet was reduced to a bio-weapon. The parasites replaced her skin, her lungs, and fuck knows what else -- but also carried the eggs of the English strain in her throat. Her life was saved purely so she could become a walking outbreak waiting to happen, which is why she is so hesitant to speak. Either she kills herself or is alone the rest of her life, lest she wipe out a fuck ton of people she does not intend to.

I think it would have been better if Big Boss came up with the idea on his own as a result of having to kill his mentor rather than going on about her Will I get what you mean about her influence.

Ocelot also seems the most confusing character. I'm still not sure if he was fighting against the Patriots or for them.

Plus, the Metal Gears ended up getting ridiculous in PW and MGSV kicked that dead horse hard. Saehalanthropus should have maybe been an underpowered prototype Rex at best, but the fact that all the Metal Gears are kind of better than the original is stupid.

He was fighting against them, using his status as a Patriots agent to work covertly for Big Boss and the Outer Heaven ideal. When Big Boss gets his shit kicked in and placed into a coma, Ocelot continues his greater mission with the added goal of needing to wake Big Boss up by destroying the AI system holding him.

Ocelot probably did not anticipate Big Boss having a change of heart and committing suicide, but nevertheless he was ultimately on Big Boss's team. I found these motivations kind of boring, myself. If MGS4 needed Ocelot to act against the Patriots I would have preferred unique reasoning, but whatever.

The only thing close to "loyalty" to Cipher she could show at that point would be carrying out her mission and unleashing the English strain on the Diamond Dogs, which she is hesitant to do because of the potential outbreak and spread beyond Mother Base, because it is NOT the first time XOF has had an outbreak of the parasites spread way beyond their damage control, and a lingua franca like English circa 1984 could be devastating if she fucked up. She wants revenge on Big Boss, but there's too much risk in use of the parasites, and frankly, she doesn't know whether or not to leave him alive to spite XOF at this point.

Throughout the game, they are intended to bond, which is admittedly underdeveloped, but there are still moments that spell it out clear as day. After her capture, they are supposed to bond on the battlefield, become more in-tune with each other and what not, but as seen in moments like her getting the child soldier necklace; Venom's stunning morality in comparison to Big Boss rubs off on her as she takes cues from his own actions, and she realizes he isn't a bad person, or even a morally gray person if you play him as intended. She goes from a ruthless killer to a selfless war buddy, and the closer she gets to Venom, the more she loses sight of her mission and falls for him. By the time you get to "A Quiet Exit," she claims to Code Talker that she does want revenge on Venom on some level, but realistically, she would give her life for the guy.

Even as underdeveloped as her story arc is compared to how it should've been, she has more reason to be loyal to Venom Snake than the hundreds of mercenaries, soviets, and other XOF that you fulton later, unless Ocelot is just that damn good at brainwashing.

Player interpretation. From a storytelling perspective, she is functionally dead, because she can't be around people anymore or she'll infect them with the English-strain parasites. Anything could've happened. She could've killed herself immediately after "A Quiet Exit," she could've been alive this whole time keeping tabs on events while leading a miserable and lonesome existence all the way up to Guns of the Patriots, or she could've died of some other cause in-between MGSV and another point on the timeline with no witnesses to speak of. We don't know, and we aren't going to know, because Kojima specifically didn't want her fate to be set in stone. In the novelization of Phantom Pain, she burned herself alive to permanently destroy the English strain, but Kojima ended up pulling the author aside and saying straight up: "That's not what happens, and I don't want it set in stone."

I like that it brought Big Boss's manipulative tendencies back into the story, but we already knew Big Boss was a manipulative dick. And something as drastic as "Oh yeah, that was Big Boss Jr." feels strange and contrived this far into the series even if its relevance to the greater story is minimal.
