Project 1999 is the way to go. It's free, people actually group and it has that feeling of confusion and being lost that new MMOs miss. It also isn't strictly based off the trinity of healer, dps and tank. I'd suggest starting with a woolf elf or halfling Druid

I mean, I doubt even if OP enjoys the game he will get to raiding due to the insane grind. There is a discord for the server and a Facebook group, and of course the forums for guilds. So you can link up with people. I hear Live EQ only maybe has twice as many players, but from what I understand the game isn't as social since you can grind easier.

I'm about to make a character on Agnarr. A human is a good choice, right? Because you can enter every city?

I've read enchanters can use illusions to turn into any race, but just how important is the ability to enter certain cities? Do you gain anything important?

Is playing Iskar worth it with the exp penalty and being killed by any other race?

Not sure if sarcastic lol. The zones certainly at that level, but you will see other people using new characters and can find groups in most areas.

Humans have the easiest time faction wise sure. Classes and deity might affect some factions though. I know someone who plays a Bertoxxolous Human necro and she says she can go everywhere so far except neriak necro guild.

Iksar are the master race, racial ability wise to me as they get the most bonuses. To me they are totally worth especially for some classes like necros with their hp regen bonus and AC bonus. Once Luclin comes out I think most of the inconveniences of being iksar don't matter as much.

Oh yea Daybreak already stated the Exp penalty for iksars is gone. Also the class exp penalties are gone as well on agnarr. I don't think they are KOS to every single race. I know off the top of my head Vah Shir don't mind them. I don't think Dark Elves would kill you either but selling and dealing with you might be another matter.

That also sounds fucking wonderful. I've heard and partly experiences the aftershock of similar shit in EVE, although that was entirely player-made. That said, I'll probably end up shelling for Crowfall when that's getting close to launch. Open-world MMOs, while usually doomed to fail like most modern ones, are usually at least fun for a while and it's certainly better than Albion and whatever Chronicles of Elyria is trying to be.

ok one more EQ story before my old ass goes to play PUBG. I am 35 and still the vidya.

A guild called Jokers on whatever my server was (some god starting with a B from the original pantheon I think?) organized a Troll run. Basically we started like 400 Trolls, and the goal was to run to the docks in Freeport and jump on the ship. This was just as the first expansion was coming out

It was funny as fuck, because there was so much shit to kill you on the way, but because of pure numbers so many of us survived. So this huge pack of trolls withered into 3-4 major packs due to bottlenecks/loading times. When we got to Freeport we tried to reform a little bit in the commonlands, and then we barged in. The fucking guards in freeport went INSANE and it crashed the zone. After a few minutes the server came back up and by the time we were logged in like half us were already slaughtered on the ground. Nevertheless we forged through, zoning the 2 times it took to get to the docks, and jumped into the sweet ocean. Only to be slaughtered by the guards seconds later of course.

In the chaos, a bunch of weird shit happened, including people getting guards to kill multiple town NPCs. A total of 30-something of us made it, including yours truly (fast computer and fast hard drive at the time)

One thing i still regret is stopping to play when Kunark came out. aperently it was the best expansion according to most of the players and it was well... Kunark.

I never got to play EQ1 causei was too young and my parents didnt allow me to play a game with a monthly subscription but i read up on all of it.

Kunark sounded like my kind of place. Volcanos, tundras, jungles and of course the greatest player race of them all.

I tried the free version of EQ2 again (my old character got delted, which pissed me off royally) only to realize that i could not go to kunark without owning the expansion. Which again pissed me off royally.

Also: still mad about EQnext not happening. It wouldve been great.

Agnarr for retail (you need a sub though) Agnarr is a progression server which unlocks expansions every few months. It's still in vanilla right now.

P99 is the most populated private server with 500+ active players at all time and peaks over 700+ easily.

If you want to just try the game out, play P99. The free to play servers are absolute trash with stupid restrictions and real money currency having more value than what you get in game.

I never played p99 but I'm on agnarr right now. It's pretty fun. It smoothes over some of the edges from original EQ but it's still fun. I just like how grouping is pretty much forced and people hold conversations. It is way more social than WoW has become. Some of the classes can solo but solo experience is complete shit. The pick system is a pretty welcome addition also.
