Shit's tenfold easier to master if you don't go bursting in with all features.

Get a missile defense drone or disable their weapons.

Get missiles and bomb that shit.

Scanners help a shit ton as well when figuring out the weak points. You can kill off the crew by bombing their current whereabouts or the O2 room. You can disable their dodge chance by bombing their bridge. You can also warp away if you feel like it's a losing battle.

Always keep your pilot seat, engine, weapons and shields manned for maximum efficiency. Any extra crew are useful in scanners and doors.
Three shield bubbles are usually enough to deal with anything, and if you have a manned shield room, you can pretty much tank anything by just spamming lasers or missiles into the enemy's weapons room.

Here's some more Captain's Remix insanity. I can't stop shilling this mod enough, it makes FTL feel like a new game again if you've already played vanilla to death. In this screenshot, I have 2 light vulcans, which are basically chain vulcans but do no ship damage. Instead, they pierce 1 shield, do 1 system damage and 15 crew damage. Bretty good for getting boarding scrap bonus, not as fun as 2 real chain vulcans though but up there

Anti personnel drone is absolute garbo, you shouldn't be using it at all. Instead, upgrade your doors (level 2 doors is usually sufficient) and vent the room they teleport into.
