I've just started Yakuza 5. I'm a bit into Saejima's part and this is easily the worst Yakuza I've played. The writing is absolutely terrible. It's so fucking boring and drawn out. They seem to really be stretching to make this game as long as the others.

I thought 4 was kinda shitty. Hated switching characters and only playing them for a couple hours. Been hesitant to start 5 after that.

NA cuts out hostess bars and turns them into shitty sidequests, cuts a good portion of mini-games and a few sidequests.
It is still good, especially if you don't know enough about the franchise to be bothered by these changes.

Start is also incredibly slow, which can be a turnoff if you don't know the story.

Yakuza 1 is ok at best but it has a horrible dub and a pretty clunky combat system, but has a good plot. all of that is improved in Yakuza 2 along with more content

Yakuza 3 starts slow but its a major jump in improvments, but has a shorter story

Yakuza 4 once again bumped up by having 4 playable MCs but its almost the same as 3 expect it doesn't start slow.

Yakuza 5 is pretty much the same as 4 but with more content

Yakuza 0 introduces multiple fighting styles which made it the best yakuza game in the series. also has the best karaoke

Yakuza 6 is a major disappointment due to the lack of content and a flawed engine because they never finished it

Yakuza kiwami is a complete remake of Yakuza 1. it fixed all the issues in the original because it uses the 0 engine.

Yakuza spin-off games like Kenzan and Ishin are really REALLY good but was never released in the west because they were made to test their new engines.

Yakuza Dead souls isn't close to a yakuza game but its a nice Dead Rising clone

The PSP yakuza games are basically Def Jam mixed with Yakuza theme. i recommend them.

hope you enjoy them. i spent 250 bucks buying all the yakuza games plus pre-ordering Kiwami and it was worth it and despite 6's flaws, im still gonna get it because its the last game that has Kiryu
