Was about to make a thread so here is some OC I whipped up for the OP image.

Anyway I just finished the Sonic 2 port on 3DS. I'd say it's the best mobile version because it's not on a fucking phone. M2 really did good work and it's a shame we won't see more genesis games from them.

In the picture with Tails, it seems to be a sort of ancient temple below Studopolis. Could it be that the next level after Studiopolis is that temple?
And about Sonic arriving as an Ice Cube, it may be after the fact that Ice Cap Zone is the previous level and Robotnick, after the boss fight, manages to freeze Sonic and sent him to the Sakura Mansion.

Which is odd because I was actually a huge sonic fan in the early 90's when he first came out. Even shelled out money for the saturn. I also rented the dreamcast from Hollywood Video months before it was released and beat Sonic Adventure in one sitting without a memory card.
Now....now I just don't care anymore.

I still like Sonics character design...as I think it represents what a good design can do....but yeah. It's a strange feeling to look at something you used to love and have no feeling at all.

Emerald Hill is my favorite starting zone in the series. It could use a few more secrets akin to Green Hill's lower sections but I love its open air design and flow.

As for Death Egg 3 I must have removed it by mistake when I was cleaning up after I moved the other final boss acts into their own category. It's one of my favorites. An easy A.

Because it plays nothing like GHZ. It just looks like it on a superficial level. GHZ is much more closed in and vertical with structure focusing on enabling speed when the player is familiar enough to time their jumps and rolls according to the rigid upward hills and its slopes.

EHZ on the other hand grants speed as a given and uses hazards to break up the pace, continued stretches of speed are granted as the player learns to avoid the hazards.

The emphasis on flow is why I prefer Emerald Hill over GHZ.

I beat Sonic 2 so many times as a little 5 year old. First time beating it I cried. Then I went to my uncles house and watched him playing Sonic 3 and knuckles, and didnt even know there was more sonic. That following christmas he got Sonic 3 with the knuckles lock on cartridge, and I played that thing every single day. When I finally got all the super emeralds I was ecstatic and immediately called my uncle on my moms phone to tell him the news. He thought it was amazing because even he had some tough time with the blue spheres. It's a pretty good feeling. Especially since I was a huge fan of the games as a kid (despite sucking). Mania has sort of rekindled an interest I haven't had in decades. I mean the last Sonic game I played was Adventure back in like 2001. This quick play through of 1 this morning was a heavy dose of nostalgiahol. I'll probably buy 2 and 3 now and give them a go some time soon.

I mean even if Mania winds up sucking I can thank it for the good time I'm having in the hype phase leading up to it at least.

Sonic Mega collection has each iteration of & Knuckles as it's own game too.

The xbox360 version of S3 and S&K can be virtually docked if you have both.

Fact of the matter is it was conceptually meant to be one game but restrained by hardware. So the docking thing was just convenient marketing like blast processing

It probably will get a mobile port like a year down the line or something - we know the engine's capable of it. The thing is, people don't really take mobile games seriously so I'm guessing they intentionally didn't give it a mobile version at first because they thought it would devalue the game in the eyes of the consumers, so to speak.

Badniks are not stage gimmicks and the second statement while true has nothing to do with anything.

But the actual interesting part about this is because a badnik bouncing you and a setpiece bouncing you are not competing elements. It's actually possible that a badnik freezes you in the new stage, and ice cap could still be in because a stage hazard freezes you.

I just doubt it because it looks like one of the acts of the new stage is a snow trope. I've heard the argument that it's an illustration of an ice cap stage transition, but why would they draw that as concept art? Also they've teased a sprite that might just be a replacement for the snowboarding section.

NTSC and PAL have different framerates. PAL runs at 50Hz and NTSC runs at 60. The drowning timer, for example, says that after a specific number of ticks you drown. There are 60 ticks in one second of NTSC Sonic, but only 50 ticks in one second of PAL Sonic so you actually have more seconds to breathe underwater in Europe.

Only updating the game engine 50 times every second makes the game 5/6th the speed of American Sonic, which updates 60 times a second.

The fix is to have one internal tickrate that the game engine runs at which is not tied to the refresh rate of the display. Then you can process the game at the same speed everywhere, but display it at the right refresh rate for the different displays.

As a kid I always headcannoned that Robotnik was just an average human industrializing shit like we all do and Sonic was just an animal fighting back. Like all the cities in the background. I didn't take it that Robotnik ruled or oppressed anyone there, just that they existed. Far off and unaffected by this private war waged by an angry rat and like, their world's version of a construction worker.

Well, in the first game at least. Sometimes I kind of wish I was less wrong about it all though. The idea that Robotnik is a bad guy for everyone on the planet and really bad at his job like every other 80s cartoon villain just feels less interesting than what child me was cooking up in my head.

That's the fucking point. The Sonic games were structured by an arcade mentality of replaying the game to become better at it and get a more fulfilling experience, something that Sega always tended to let inform their games back in the day and still do to an extent. This leads a lot of people to say it has bad game design when the fact is they're just bad at the game. Once you beat a Mario game there's basically no reason to play it again. When I beat a Sonic game I immediately want to play it again as a different character with different abilities on a different route, because the levels in Sonic are so much more dense that it's literally impossible to see all of the game's content without doing a couple playthroughs.

It does. In fact in Super Mario Land 2 there's a cheat you can access from the very beginning. It changes your entire game to an easy mode. I forgot the input but I remember reading about it in a cheat magazine I got back in the day. For Super Mario Land, there's a demo code you in can input.

I'm more of a Mario fan honestly but come on dude, the Super forms in Sonic are nothing like the Super Mushroom in Mario, they just makes Mario have a larger hit box & get a extra hit, those are comparable to Rings if anything. Also if you want to compare the Super forms to something in Mario then it'd be Invincibility Leaf in 3D Land/World since it gives you Invincibility & extra abilities from the normal Leaf & Tanooki Suit with the statue ability which is similar to the Super forms in Sonic since those give invincibility, higher speeds & offer a new way to control the character (as in Hyper Sonic has that flash that propels him in any 8 directions, Tails gets Flickies & Knuckles can slam hard into walls to destroy badniks around him). I would like to note that fucking Invincibility Leaf isn't a reward though unlike the Super forms since you only get it if you play bad enough which I personally find to be a negative.

Thanks to whoever it was that linked that BetterSADX stuff in yesterday's thread, not only did I finally remembered to try that game out since I have it on Steam, I can play it content that it's actually somewhat close to the Dreamcast version (I was not aware how much changed in the DX version).

The reason I quit the game long enough to post this is because I need to close other running programs/apps and take another look at those graphics settings. Having a choppy framerate on the Chaos 0 fight and Emerald Coast does not bode well considering the game is originally from the 90s.

No. Hydrocity's water is just as annoying as any other segment of water anywhere else. The conveyors are not any more fun than the variable spring platforms in Aquatic Ruin. Also Aquatic Ruin's water segments are far shorter than Hydrocity's if you want to get into what a "slog" is.

The lower paths are punishments for poor performance in both levels. Hydrocity rewards with fun loops and stage gimmicks on the high path while Aquatic Ruin's high path is more platforming and badnik dodging heavy - the reward being how fast the zone can be blazed through.

Both are great levels equally deserving of tender ball massages as their cocks are sucked.

Not sure that I can argue it's not a "slog", but when you start a game of Sonic 1 you're signing up for Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone. If you just want a game where you go fast all the time play Sonic 2 or something. When I play Sonic 1 I mentally prepare myself for a slower, more contemplative experience. But that's just me. It's not my favorite level but I find it tolerable.

Chemical Plant 2 is the same as in Sonic 2 until you get past that water part and the two rotating platforms aren't there. I just gave up.

Emerald Hill was ok, but nothing special and there was one part where a loop led me into a bottomless pit. Other than that, whatever.

For Sonic? Yeah it is, unless it's similar enough to do everything Sonic can do like Tails and Knuckles can. Sonic is built around a very distinct playstyle and very specific gameplay that is tested by varied and unique levels. It's not as simple as making very simple levels with very simple gameplay like Mario or Kirby, those kinds of games are suited to having various playstyles. If you make a bunch for Sonics the levels will just end up as boring messes like Knuckles' Chaotix.

For very slightly different flavors of Sonic. Tails for bad players, Knuckles for good players that can access shortcuts easier. They're not necessary but they're all you need for extra characters without making extra characters convoluted (amy) or redundant (cream).
