i dont know how to do what i want to do within the game and also trying hard to get an artstyle, that and steam friends ask me to play games and im replaying games i played 10+ years ago.
gonna start full timing it tomorrow, the more games i play the more i realize i'd rather make a game that i would play

I'm a poorfag so buying an engine/their assets is out of the question. but I do have some basic knowledge of C# (main language for college stuff but seriously I'm not really good at it).

so yeah basically I'm just depressed I might fail or screw up and eventually give up everything

Just start with blueprints in UE4, if you're still interested after doing a few tutorials then you can bother with the C++ stuff.

On that note does anyone know a good way to record stuff done in UE4 for webms? Preferrably from when I just run shit in the editor so I don't have to make a package every time?

If you're here, it's pretty easy to trace to all lights. For indirect lighting there is a volumetric cache with light info at each location. The light that's hidden behind the wall returns false, the other two return true.

lololol.

I work 9-5 at my regular job, with weekends off. Putting quality effort into a side project will involve me giving up most other things that I enjoy doing.

I don't want to spend my 20s working around the clock. Life is about balancing your desires. Mine are the following:

1.) Travel the world
2.) Live comfortably (i.e., never have to worry about money)
3.) Raise children

Somewhere far down the list, is "make a video game".

Committing to that seriously, would mean compromising the top three to varying degrees.
>>
I need to think about how I can tie narrative with gameplay in a way that's not distracting but still get's the story across, while also not ending up too big in scope, honestly seems impossible if you plan on making a decent 3D game, but it's fun planning it out on paper at least.
>>
>>385535651

Most, if not all, of the bad Early Access and Kickstarter games have either not even had an MVP, had scope creep or just taken the money and ran.

I'm doing it like that currently.
I dislike the idea of doing it each frame so i limited traces to whenever the character stands close enough to a light source (so in a certain volume)

Problem is, if you are working with directional lighting (like in an outdoor area) the whole approach gets inaccurate, since you have to approximate the "origin" of that light and trace from there.

I'm a lazy, worthless, technically and artistically inept dumbass that wouldn't be able to do that unless someone held my baby hand through the whole thing, and nobody would or should care enough to do that since they will be better off just using that time to make their OWN game.
I'll just keep writing down all my little ideas and sketches in my journal and die without having contributed anything to the world, and eventually my ideas will become dust that nobody will ever see, or would ever consider caring about at any point in time. And you know, I'm at peace with that.

I have two excuses

One, I'm really bad at time management right now so I spend most of my day with learning Japanese and being in the gym (okay I'll admit I spend too much time on 4chan aswell)

Two, I can't get Unreal Engine 4 to start AT ALL
I've installed it a million (two) times and it won't even open the new project that I just created
I have no idea how to fix it, and UE4 google troubleshooting is a fucking useless waste of time

>>
>>385536704

>>
>>385537461
Not really, the directional light should be included in the indirect cache and you shouldn't be tracing to it. I would also further optimize it by only tracing when the irradiance volume shows you're in the shadow and by keeping track of all lights on the scene. If you don't have to get all lights before each trace then it becomes a trivial algorithm since traces are cheap as fuck.
Further improvements are having multiple trace origins on the player so that if the torso is hidden but the head or an arm are not then it doesn't hide you.

The project dll was built using engine version 4.x and you're trying to open it with engine version 4.y. You may try rebuilding but if the difference between engines is more than 2 versions it may not work. If you absolutely need that project simply install the correct version of the engine.
But you open the engine itself by clicking on the exe or through the Epic launcher, you don't need a project to start up the engine.

>>
>>385542883
Well a lot of things could go wrong, but I can assure you it was your fault, the engine has bugs but not being able to open projects is not one of them. Could be from a missing or broken plugin, could be from compiling the engine from source and then installing it from the launcher, could be from corrupted intermediate files. It could even be because of your Visual Studio installation.

Why don't you make a new project, do you really need that one?
>>
>>385542883
I believe google is your friend in this case. I've had similar problems before and I think I solved it by reinstalling the engine but I can't quite remember.

Also specifically this, if you install your VS wrong it's going to fuck up everything. Did you ever actually manage to open the project or did it fail immediately after creating it?

Oh, in that case you have to manually set the VS version to 2017. If you're building the engine you have to run GenerateProjectFiles.bat -2017 and if you're installing the engine from the launcher you have to manually set the version in the editor preferences ini

That's cool that you have experience in C++ and all but what's important is that you actually get to work on your game. In the time that you waste trying to get Unreal to work you could have been using something else and still gotten a similar product. For Unity specifically the transition to C# will be painless.

I come from a C++ background too and while I'd prefer to use that it over C# so I could manage my own memory allocation instead of dealing with a garbage collector; I find that Unity provides a much faster and understandable workflow for me.

To each their own though I hope you get Unreal working I understand your frustration with software that doesn't work out of the box.

I've got really interested in this lately, for someone that knows nothing about developing games - what would be the best starting point? Unity or Unreal 4?
>>
>>385546418
ue4 is far easier. it has blueprints and better prototyping / level design tools build in

Too busy with modding and prototyping. An unofficial nuclear throne patch adds a modding api that takes plain GML and allows you to load your code on-the-fly, which has absolutely spoiled me. Thankfully, the developer intends to release a paid extension for GMS1 and GMS2, so I can continue using it when I begin my own project.

Also, I don't have anyone for art or music, so I've been horsing around with this instead. I can kinda sorta do both, but I can't do everything on my own without the end product being absolute garbage.

The appeal is that I can use the system to make tiny tweaks to make everything look just right in one sitting (I don't need to do the same for functionality). I could hypothetically hijack the entire game and start building my own stuff since that's possible with the system, but it seems like too much effort.

So I was looking at engines, specifically Unity 5. I'd like to make something that has drop in co-op similar to something like Borderlands, where the game simply adjusts if there are more players but is perfectly capable of running with 1 player.

Really is a lack of any kind of tutorial for p2p networking, its all this Photon/ULink/UnityMP crap that leashes you into a small number of concurrent users, and everyone seems fine with that for some reason, even if their game really wouldn't require matchmaking or dedicated server. Really wierd.

I was working on something my myself and then later with a couple friends.
it was a mistake letting them 'help' one friend was much, much better at the programming side than I was and the last friend was only really kept around to do for sprites and shit.
then they turned into assholes, because they decided that even though it was originally my thing I was doing by myself, they had more rights and say in it than me because they "did more work" because I spent half my time figuring out shit such as what the games town's layout was going to be, dialog, how much damage and health shit would have and that apparently made me "a useless Idea guy"

they really aren't random, if you notice that bar in the top right it increases as you walk in certain areas that have enemies. There are a bunch of ways to make it go down, and you can go the through the game without encountering a single enemy.

>>
>>385569273

>>
Fuck me. Something that's been bothering me for ages with GM I finally fixed. Anytime you used a resized screen there's a small flicker on smaller background objects as you move the camera. All my art is even numbers and I've spent ages going over my movement and camera code since that's typically the culprit (a lag between the two, not using integers, or so on).
But, turn pixel interpolation on (something you usually keep turned off for nice crisp art) and it goes away. Now I just toggle on/off interpolation before drawing various objects depending if I want them detailed or not.

I want GM2 to use SVG format so I can just use vector art damnit.

Not him but I lost interest right there. And mutants vs humans doesn't help. I'd say that setting is pretty overused unless you have some fresh ideas for it or ways to make the setting affect the player more than an "rusted out or destroyed buildings and vehicles all over" aesthetic.

Mostly you'd be going against the walking dead and fallout, along with a slew of indie titles. Not saying something new or interesting couldn't be done with the setting, but you've got a bit of an uphill battle there.

I'm 85% sure he was joking. But like you say there's some room to make it original. I have thought of a lighthearted post apocalyptic setting with very colorful scenes overrun with nature. Where instead of hell you have paradise since space and resources are more abundant, a chance to start again. Which is really not an original setting at all but fuck it.
>>
>>385577960
But I'd play that. You could even do various psychological numbers with that wondering if you should feel guilty or relieved about humanity and such while you are living it up.

Actually reminds me of one I stumbled across over on exhentai a long time back. Man and women are last 2 beings left. Start fucking. Shes actually a robot but turns him into a robot that can bone her forever. Mans not even sad that humanities dead.

But standard post apocalyptic shit always has people at each others throats and backstabbing each other while fighting over scarce resources while some enemy that is typically less of a threat than another human is roaming in the background.
>>
>>385577626

for the most part I dont want to have the entire setting be rusted out and destroyed buildings, as most of the mutant settlements are made by mutants to fit their needs i.e for a water based mutant they have a swamp settlement with various underwater houses, for a fire-lava mutant they have made their own little volcanoes for homes and for crystal based mutants they made a whole town out of crystals and for bug based mutants they have their own hive settlements, as well as mutants also living off radiation like plants, so theres stuff like that along with the humans trying to take out the mutants because they need clean air to survive and like I said these mutants live off radiation and will die when exposed to 100% clean air so theres that conflict as well
