2007 - current

Video games peaked with the Dark Souls series, specifically Dark Souls 2. Before that video games were just that, games. They were just toys.

Last full good season? Season 7. Season 8 had a few clunkers. Season 9 had even more clunkers. And it just spread on from there to the point where there was basically no more good episodes by Season 14.

This. That's when games had just the right balance.

They'd become more mainstream, but not mainstream enough for feminists to give a fuck. So they got more exposure, which led to more games being made, without the downside of SJWs and their neo-puritanical bullshit. We did have to deal with people like Jack Thompson, but no one in the industry really took them seriously, they never actually infiltrated the industry itself, and honestly, I can understand concerns about violence more than concerns about "OMG big-breasted game characters make men into evil misogynists! Grow up, you sexist nerds!"

The technology got better and made games look really good, but development costs were still low enough that a lot of devs could make games, and a game didn't need to make a billion dollars to be considered successful. There were a lot more teams making games, and they had the freedom to experiment, because they didn't have to worry about getting the Call of Duty audience. So we got both quantity and quality. True, there was also lots of shovelware, but that's a small price to pay for having huge numbers of very good AA games. It was certainly preferable to the current AAA/indie dichotomy.
>>
Late 2000s saw a big influx millenial women into gaming industry and it was these people who ruined gaming.

2017, because I can literally go back and play every game ever released and more games are getting released this year. Spending around 500$ on a PC with even the weakest of entry level graphics cards will enable me to play literally every game ever made besides those on the OG Xbox, PS3 (which is changing), 360 (Xenia), Wii U (Gonna take a year or so for BotW but still), and the current console generation (which will ALSO change in the next 10 years)

The current golden age of gaming is whatever year it is when somebody makes this stupid fucking thread.

Can't argue with games.

Although this was the norm back then. Good games were a dime a dozen. You could literally go to the store, see a box with a popular game studio on it and cool box art, buy it and know you were in for something great. No banter, no bullshit. Just good ol' gaming.

What the fuck does that matter when the games still fucking exist? Nobody is stopping me from playing Mario 64 or Mega Man X or Xenogears (which everybody lists but nobody has ever actually played because if they did they'd remember that like half the fucking game was cut out and made for a really shit second half) today. The games are still fucking there; if you don't like the new games don't fucking play them and stick to your old ones, you have the option to do this. Kids in the 90s did not have that option.

I WAS there. I could only get one game per week because I didn't have enough money for any actual games. Until I was 13 I wasn't allowed to own a games console, I had to borrow one from a friend. When I got my N64 it was the happiest I'd ever been; then I remembered that games were like 90$ and only got like three of them throughout the time I owned it before the GC came out. Unless the game was never actually good, they'll stand the test of time until whoever comes along puts it in the slot/emulates it, and will still be discovered for the good games that they are. I just have access to thousands more games than I did back in the mid nineties.

What's the problem? Why wouldn't the best game ever made not create the golden age of gaming?
>>
>>385525094

There are technically more games being made today thanks to indies and cheap cellphone games, but there are far fewer quality games targeted towards the hardcore/gamer geek crowd. I don't think they're nearly as good or polished, either.
>>
>>385525193
I pirated your game todd

and fallout 4 too
>>
>>385524993
that's basically what I did

it made me hate story games and love games with great gameplay

Ignore lit, start with what you like and then start branching out into reading the greats. I started with fantasy because I've always loved it and that taught me how to read without losing focus, because trust me, video games took away some of your attention span.

Probably around 80-88. Before the 90s every game had to be it's own thing so every single dev actually had to get down and do game design work. You couldn't just make Centipede but better/more refined to be successful so wildly different games like Rogue, Joust, Dig Dug and Burger Time were created. In the pre-genre video game days every dev had to consider every element they put in their games.

There was no "well you use this view because we're making an FPS". Post genre video games in the 90s were stagnant as fuck, with very devs willing to put in the work to create their own ruleset.

Of course throughout the 90s and to today there were still experimental games but not to the extent there were in the 80s. I would think that today, with video game development being more accessible than ever before people could be more creative but it's this feedback loop of players wanting to make a game they already played except with their garbageass indie budget.

>>385525510
I disagree on the whole, but you make a lot of very good points in regards to established conventions of game design. A lot of things that we accept about various genres are only conventional because nobody has really bothered to challenge them
>but it's this feedback loop of players wanting to make a game they already played except with their garbageass indie budget.
this is so incredibly true, which is why the value of indie titles has lowered over the years
that being said, good indie games still get made, and it's a shame that /v/ dismisses anything made independently or with a low budget

But once you've played them all, you're faced with the fact that good games like those aren't made anymore. I understand your argument, and I can even agree with it to an extent, but that doesn't make the current industry any less shitty.
>>
>>385523484
There's some merit to that argument but there's nothing quite like experiencing games as they come out, simply playing the game years later is simply not the same experience.
