It came out in the right place at the right time. Ultima and Wizardry weren't well known in Japan, so for most casual consumers Dragon Quest was the first of its kind. Enix capitalized on that legacy and the rest is history.

DQ is a national treasure. It was the very first JRPG and everyone in Japan played it as a kid. So they all have very nostalgic feelings for it.

It's not about mechanics, or the plot or whatever, it's really just for that feeling of leaving the first town with a shitty sword to beat up slimes. DQ is about that. It's an acquired taste.

Dragon Quest's sales aren't that phenomenal in Japan (1.23 million for Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past in Japan, for a game released in 2013), plenty of other franchises like Pokémon and Monster Hunter beat it when on the same hardware.
