Because nobody cared. It was always all about the quirky characters you talk to. Compare how much time was spent pre-launch talking about gameplay and how much was spent talking about characters.

Because they specifically included a top-down, pause-based view that allows you to give orders to each of your party members for when you need full control of your party. It's made worse by the lack of a set tactics system like Origins, true, but there are barely any times you need to micromange your party anyway. In my experience the AI can handle support roles like tanks and mages fine.

I don't even want to finish the game at this point. Maybe I'm just ignorant to game design, but how hard could it be to make ranged characters at least half ass an attempt at staying at least mid range?

There are two 'hold position' commands, which will help - double-clicking a location in the tactical menu orders the character to move to that location and hold position; there's another general 'hold' command but I don't remember the keybind because I play with a controller
Why are you having so much trouble, anon? Even without ordering my party too much, I rarely had trouble keeping my ranged party members back from the fight - I was more annoyed with them sometimes not disengaging when an enemy moved up to melee them. Do you have an AI tank? Also, make sure you haven't ordered the group to follow you constantly.

It could help to start combat with one of the ranged members of your party so start them back from the enemy, and let your melee characters move forward to engage. Just ordering them to hold position should be a big help, though, I used it for all my dragon fights.

Just for a reference point, can you give us an example of what you would consider good AI?

Inquisition doesn't have the same complexity with setting if:then conditions, sure, but I also found that in my experience I didn't need it to. Especially with more actionized gameplay, I found my tanks and support mages were a lot better at acting autonomously than in Origins.
Inquisition's base with the optional tactics from Origins on top would be best, I agree.

Anon, maybe you just have to get used to single player games again. Dealing with counterintuitive/stupid companion AI is all part of the fun.

Also, be aware that there is a tactics menu for each companion, even if it's not as in-depth as Origins. Make sure you set any melee-ranged abilities on your ranged characters (like Caltrops for a rogue) to 'disabled' and tell them to prefer all of their range abilities. If you're still having trouble, set your ranged characters to 'follow' themselves or 'defend' themselves in their tactics screen.

How come the dwarves are the best thing about Dragon Age when they should be the most boring and derivative?

All of the dwarf NPC's are good, the dwarf culture is the most interesting, their soldiers are called the legion of the dead and have eternal war with Darkspawn, the carta mafia never fails for flavoring, their sick golem shit, and the whole thing with the Titans and their magic. Even their retards are cool, Dagna was cool, and Sandal is one of the best parts of Origins. Even Varric is cool and he's the crappiest of the dwarf characters.

There was a self-awareness to the characters that a lot of Inquision lacked, which fit really well with the framing as a story Varric is telling, but there was also a lot of warmth and sincerity there.
Inquisition has some good characters (Solas, Cassandra) but it also has some irredeemably terrible ones (Vivienne, Bull) and it doesn't come close to capturing the party dynamic II had.

And you can just buy it later, once you reach Skyhold. Sounds like you made the mistake of trying to do absolutely everything in the starter areas at once.

I still go back and forth between thinking that Sera is a fucking tragedy of writing and Sera is a fucking moment of genius for writing.

It's like they flipped the usual party member stuff around; instead of some super powerful or important special snowflake, you get just a random bandit. She's uneducated and ignorant. She doesn't really want to do anything about that. She's crass and base and ill-tempered and genuinely enjoys violence. She never interrogates her biases or prejudices; she fully embraces them. Her "specialness" comes from her being a completely replaceable piece of a network of just random everyday people.

And Bioware knew that she was going to be abrasive and people were going to hate her; she's the only party member you can tell, at any point in the game, to go fuck themselves and get out. Other characters you make the decision to take them into your party just for that initial meeting, but you can go to Sera at any point and just tell her to go away.

Like I said, I go back and forth. Maybe they thought they were making a cool character and all of this is just overreading on my part.

It seemed like they wanted to do Dragon Age: Origins combat, while also doing something like Dragon's Dogma combat. It's this odd mix of an action game with the camera centered close on your character, and a tactical game with you pausing the game and giving orders. But neither one nor the other works well, since they ruin it for each other.

No, she does get involved with someone else. From the wiki:
