no they're making like 2 billion a year.

They'll put out L4D3 in the next year or so and everyone will lose their shit. They'll make another 2 billion and then go back into not making games while updating their old games that still make them money via micro transactions.

They're raking in millions of dollars just from owning the Steam platform and they have several teams and studios.
I'm sure they must be working on something. Whether or not they know that people will be pissed if their next title having a 3 in it isn't Half-Life is a completely different question though.
>>
>>385501618
>are they dead?
They're making money hand over fist, m8. To cap it off they're a private company with no obligations to shareholders so they can continue doing literally whatever the fuck they please. They're not even close to dying and they're going to release whatever games they want to matter how many animals I sacrifice to bring the coming of Half Life 3.

Honestly I don't think Valve would go that far, it would burn too many bridges of the many developers creating in that genre to just supercede their work, however shitty it may be. I think they probably get more monies by allow the audience to continously purchase the early access versions across the developers and taking their cut.

Pathetically plebian taste, anon
>>
>>385501618
Absolutely. Their lack of creative work combined with focus on hardware hasn't made that clear already? When you also remember that Gaben doesn't give a fuck what his employees do, it's no surprise that they'd all rather just focus on the Dota, CSGO or TF2 since it's super easy work for significantly high pay. The Portal 2 making of book really made it clear to me that most employees at valve are scared of taking on such a task. Even Eric Wolpaw was getting physically ill with the amount of pressure he was under, so I can't imagine the tech team having to figure that shit out. Again, Gabe is to blame for all this. If he actually commanded the people he pays the salaries of to make a new game, they'd have no choice. But he doesn't. He just doesn't care.

VR needs to become affordable. Remember when blu-ray players came out? The first phones with colour screens? Etc. All expensive. But then they eventually became more affordable. That's what will happen with VR.
>>
>>385504495
That percentage will go up after some interesting games come out for it.

Valve and basically every other major studio are working on VR games right now.
>>
They own the market for indie games, helping and at the same time making it harder for indie devs.

They laid off most of their dev team for their marketing team.

Because they have a good track record, no one will criticize them.
>>
>>385504665
>>385504681
I'm hoping both of you are right, because the cost of VR currently is a high entry barrier for the majority of people. It'll be really cool when it becomes mainstream. If it becomes mainstream
>>
>>385501618
>no future game projects even announced
It's confirmed they are currently working on 3 new games. And they are indie anon, they don't have to announce anything or release games at a specific date to please publishers and shareholders. Just because the rest of the industry is shitting out sequels every other day and brainwashing you with marketing doesn't mean they too have to do it.
>are they dead?
Well considering in recent years they worked on source 2, a new physics engine, steamboxes, steam os, steam controller, some VR stuff, new games and, updating their main games and working on porting TF2/CSGO on source 2, I think they are far from dead, they have done more than most studios out there combined.
>>
>>385504792
It probably will become mainstream. AR has a better chance at breaking through to Normies, but the Rift's recent price cut to 50% is surely gonna help the VR side.
>>
>>385504638
you first, retard.
>>
>>385501706
>muh half life 3

HL2 was only so good because of the era it was released. Most people who praise it havent played it, or played it years after release when it was just a mediocre game.
>>
>>385504117
How is their business model cancerous? Their games are cheap as fuck, they are on sales all the fucking time, and you can literally sell items you dropped while playing on the marketplace.

How is that cancerous in any way? I literally made over 250 bucks just by selling crates I dropped in CSGO. They literally allow you to purchase games on steam FOR FREE, and some underaged fucks are still finding reasons to complain. Name a single other company that let's its players make money.
>>
>>385504509
But they have done a shitton of things between DotA 2 and now.
>>
>>385504868
>currently working on 3 new games
most likely VR games since they've been working so hard to shill it to no avail. In any case they aren't L4D2/Portal tier games.
>>

What a joke. That will simply never happen.
>>
>>385505117
Valve has a "do whatever you want" approach to development. So instead of being assigned to a project you are free to choose whatever you want. This leads to dwindling dev teams for one project and over bloated teams for another.
>>
>>385505272
>most likely VR games
They are still working on games, anon said they are dead, I said they it's the oppisite.
>In any case they aren't L4D2/Portal tier games.
You're probably right. And we may be wrong. We don't know.
>>
>>385504404
You somehow made it much worse.
>>
>>385505117
Their business model is cancerous in two ways that anon might have meant:
1. Their free workplace (Meaning any employee can work in any project or game that is currently being invested in)
2. Crate/key system which has plagued twitch, youtube, and other's money over virtual pixels
>>
>>385505427
>That will simply never happen.
It's been more than seriously hinted at. Just like CSGO. Why wouldn't they give a second life to their second most popular shooter that's been going strong for 10 fucking years.
>>385505430
I know how they work but I was answering to the anon saying their business model is cancerous, which is the complete opposite, I think you quoted the wrong post.
Also, they can do whatever the fuck they want, they are indie, nobody is telling them what to do and when to do it. Just because /v/ is used to their favorite studios shitting out new games at sanic speed doesn't mean it's how it's supposed to be done.

The whole thread was about OP saying Valve are not making games and are dead. No matter how you look at it, they ARE making games, and have done more work in the last few years than most studios out there combined. And unless someone provides valid arguments, it's fair to say they are some of the most user friendly companies (I mean, seriously, you can make actual money from their games)
>>
>>385505790
They already said they aren't Sporting TF2. The code is too much of a clusterfuck
>>
>>385505562
1. How the fuck is giving freedom to your employees cancerous? Cancerous would mean they are having a negative impact or hurting consumers, which they are not doing. They have all the money and time they want, they just want to have fun and do things because they WANT TO do them, not because the big boss told them to do it. This leads to content made with passion, not with corporate jewery. I wish I could work at Valve.

2.Crates/Key system (the way valve does it at least) is the very definition of NOT cancerous in the slightest. They are completely optional and irrelevant skins that have NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER on the game iteself, and allow the players to make real money.
I bought CSGO at release for around 20 bucks, haven't spend a single cent on skins, and sold over 250 bucks worth of content. With that money I bought steam games, CSGO items which I sold to kids for even more money and made an even bigger profit, and even sent 100 bucks to paypal which were used to buy 99% pure meth. I could have even sold the skins on sites for real life money. Some people spend their entire days trading and make a living out of it. This is genius.

Retards will spend hundreds of bucks on a purple m4 and octopus hats for TF2, while smart people will enjoy the game and make money on the side. Consumer friendly in its purest form.
>>
Didn't a few Vidya news places confirm there currently working on 3 games?
>>
>>385501618
No, they're not dead, they're making money off the idiots who buy cosmetics, early access games and games from summer and winter sales.

If I could do that with my platform, why would I put in any effort towards making games instead of just keeping the platform up and running?
