Too many drugs and weird fucking level design. Did not understand what people loved about the first game. It wasn't the packing every level full of enemies, guns and AI with perfect aim.

People liked HM1 because it offered great replayability and improvisation was rewarding.

Here replayability is severelely reduced because you can only play the levels with certains characters. Even if thoses characters have different playstyles (like the Fans or Beard) there's no reason they couldn't unlock a post-game mode where I can play as the Writer tearing shit up in Hawaii.

Improvisation is also severely punished due to the multiplication of giganigga or ninjas meaning you have to have a certain weapon equipped at a certain part to kill a particular dude. All in all getting S-Rank everywhere felt way more like "Memorize everything and execute each shot perfectly to get the biggest combo possible" than "Congrats you're a murder machine". I can understand why people liked it but to me HM1 had a better balance between getting combos and improvisations.

The levels were also horribly bloated to the points that you could house a small family in the toilets of a random house. Which also mean that sometimes, peeking WAS the only answer because you couldn't mechanically shoot your weapon fast enough to kill policeman A and B without the other firing his shotgun at you.

Old news, but I had never seen this before or heard these dudes talk and it's pretty great.

HM2 had a worse story that at times became difficult to follow who was where and why, although it did have some really cool elements that never got the full attention they deserve like Richard being the embodiment of Death and that cult level that seemed out of place and context. Meanwhile it had moments that absolutely shined through it all such as the ending and Richters mom. Overall it was too fragmented and at times seemed to conflict with HM1 even though HM1 didn't really establish a lore. And it did have too much variation in level quality. Some levels were fucking fantastic while others were just a slog to play through. They still maintained that HM staple where it beats you down to the point that when you finally beat it you feel like you accomplished something, but there were also too many times where it seems the devs went autistically overboard on the concept of each level being a puzzle. The music was better and so were the visuals.

HM1 had a better story that was focused on a singular character in a story, and even when it took turns to crazy town it wasn't hard to grasp what was happening. Overall it's level designs were more consistent in quality with a few being borderline not fun.

That's the easiest way to sum it up. HM1 is overall great, it's got some dips but they never drop below good. HM2 has fucking valleys and mountains for highs and lows.

there's no mask variety in HM2. Also some of the mechanics just outright don't work right a good portion of the time (dodge roll, Ash).
Otherwise I prefer it to the original myself. Not vastly, but I still prefer it.
